New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called for an investigation into the head of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's vaccination program, who had reportedly called county executives to see if they support Cuomo during his multiple scandals.
According to The Washington Post, "vaccine czar" Larry Schwartz made the calls that made at least one county official fear that their response could jeopardize the county's ability to get vaccines and would impact the vaccine supply.
"What we've heard about the governor and his team trying to link vaccine supply to political support, that is the definition of corruption," de Blasio said during a Monday press briefing. "It is disgusting, it is dangerous. There are lives on the line, and it cannot be tolerated."
The mayor went on to call for an investigation of what happened with Schwartz's calls, in addition to the multiple ongoing probes Cuomo is facing.
"There needs to be now a full investigation of that, on top of the investigation of nursing home scandal, the investigation of sexual harassment and molestation," de Blasio said. "There needs to be an investigation of what happened with the Tappan Zee Bridge, but now on top of it there needs to be an investigation of why a senior official in the governor’s office clearly tried to link vaccine supply to political support."

High-level sources have indicated that Gov. Gavin Newsom is having a sexual relationship with one of his top aides, a Los Angeles news outlet is reporting.
With California in the throes of the Governor-induced lockdowns and economic chaos, the revelation could sink the hopes of Newsom as he battles a growing recall movement.
Many of Newsom’s other employees know about the affair and are prepared to leave the governor’s office, sources told the Los Cerritos Community Newspaper.
The Governor, husband to Jennifer Siebel Newsom and father of four children, made major changes to his communications office last week to prepare for the recall campaign, which has submitted enough signatures to force a statewide referendum later this year as to whether Newsom should remain in office.
Among other changes, he expanded the duties of deputy chief of staff Lindsey Cobia, his former deputy campaign manager in 2018.
Also in 2018, Ruby Rippey Gibney confirmed that she was the mystery woman who had an affair with the then divorced Newsom when he served as San Francisco mayor. Gibney, the mayor’s appointment secretary, was at the time married to Newsom’s good friend and campaign adviser, Alex Tourk.

GOP Cries Foul as California OKs New Governor Recall Rules
California Republicans accused Democrats of acting unfairly Monday as state lawmakers passed a bill aimed at moving up Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom's recall date.
“The conclusion is inescapable that Gavin Newsom is cheating in the recall and this Legislature is his willing accomplice," said Republican Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, who is considering running in the contest.
The proposal, now headed to Newsom's desk, would allow the recall to proceed at least 30 days earlier than under existing state law. Democrats hope to take advantage of what they view as favorable conditions for Newsom as the state moves on from the worst days of the pandemic and related restrictions.
Democratic Assemblyman Phil Ting acknowledged the bill will “ensure that this recall election happens as soon as possible" and said that's something the recall's supporters should want.
Recall organizers collected 1.7 million signatures in support of recalling Newsom, and he'll face an election later this year. Without the recall, he'd next face voters in 2022 for a regularly scheduled reelection.
This marks the second time Democrats are changing the rules in hopes of helping their own. Four years ago, they added new steps to the recall process as a state senator faced a removal vote. At the time, they hoped to slow things down so the vote would align with the next primary. The changes gave voters who signed the recall petition 30 business days to remove their signatures and set a process for state finance officials and lawmakers to estimate and review election costs.

Gavin Newsom remained unsettled Sunday, with conservative talk radio host Larry Elder maintaining he should be included but state officials saying he submitted incomplete tax returns, a requirement to run.
Elder's next recourse is to go to court to get on the ballot for the Sept. 14 election. Candidates are required to submit tax returns for the five most recent taxable years and pay a nearly $4,200 filing fee or submit 7,000 signatures. A letter to Elder shared late Sunday by the secretary of state's office does not detail what tax information he did not include, and Elder's campaign didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Several other candidates have not yet filed their 2020 tax returns so they only submitted four years' worth of returns.

In 2019 Newsom signed a bill requiring presidential and gubernatorial candidates to provide five years of tax history. The CA Supreme Court unanimously ruled against it - in favor of Trump.
Now CA is applying this law to candidates in the recall election. Larry Elder’s error seems to have been the failure to redact his SSN from his submitted tax records. I guess CA wants to protect Elder’s privacy. ::)

"You can't imagine what life is like in California…you don't get how bad it is, and that's why [Newsom’s] in trouble," Dr. Drew told Fox News's Brian Kilmeade. "You need only walk out of your house to see how things are deteriorating…It's so astonishing that the average person just can't abide by it any longer…I'll be surprised if he's not recalled."

RFK assassin Sirhan wins parole with support of 2 Kennedys
SAN DIEGO (AP) — U.S. Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin was granted parole Friday after two of RFK’s sons spoke in favor of Sirhan Sirhan’s release and prosecutors declined to argue he should be kept behind bars.
The decision was a major victory for the 77-year-old prisoner, though it does not assure his release.
The ruling by the two-person panel at Sirhan’s 16th parole hearing will be reviewed over the next 90 days by the California Parole Board’s staff. Then it will be sent to the governor, who will have 30 days to decide whether to grant it, reverse it or modify it.

Prosecutors declined to participate or oppose his release under a policy by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, a former police officer who took office last year after running on a reform platform.
Gascón, who said he idolized the Kennedys and mourned RFK’s assassination, believes the prosecutors’ role ends at sentencing and they should not influence decisions to release prisoners.

The late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy’s assassin was granted parole Friday after two of the slain political icon’s sons said they supported his release.
Douglas Kennedy, who was a toddler when his father was gunned down in 1968, said he was moved to tears by Sirhan Sirhan’s remorse during a parole hearing that prosecutors didn’t attend.
“I’m overwhelmed just by being able to view Mr. Sirhan face to face,” he said.
“I think I’ve lived my life both in fear of him and his name in one way or another. And I am grateful today to see him as a human being worthy of compassion and love.”
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has spoken in favor of Sirhan’s release in the past, also wrote in favor of paroling Sirhan.

California Governor Gavin Newsom just extended the state of emergency in California a third time, claiming it is related to increasing COVID threats.
Newsom’s latest executive order extends until the end of March 2022, making the “emergency” effective for a total of more than two years.
As the Globe reported earlier Thursday, Gov. Gavin Newsom, back from his two weeks of “family obligations,” said on Tuesday that wearing masks will remain one of his mandated orders – “for your safety and those around you.”

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) passed a regulation aimed at “Small Off-Road Engines” on Thursday that will ban the sale of portable generators in the state — which includes generators mounted in recreational vehicles.
The ruling bans the sale of gas-powered leaf blowers and lawnmowers in the state beginning in 2024. Portable generators will be required to meet more stringent standards in 2024 and meet zero-emission standards starting in 2028.
In the 2024 model year, portable generators will have to improve their efficiency by somewhere between 40% and 90%, which seems unrealistic in such a short period of time, so the reality is, it will be very hard to find a generator in Calfornia in two years.

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- People are going to great lengths to avoid car break-ins, even if that means risking it all.
"I'm shocked," said former SFPD Deputy Chief Garret Tom. "There's so much that can go wrong here."
We've heard of cars being left unlocked, windows rolled down, but now some people are leaving their trunks open too. It's raising eyebrows as reports of car break-ins are on the rise in San Francisco and Oakland.
A witness who saw it happen wrote on social media, "Imagine having to clean out your car and leaving it open in public, just so people won't break your windows. Oakland we looking sad man."

California’s mask mandate for indoor public settings will remain in place until at least Feb. 15, officials announced.
The state’s Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly made the announcement on Jan. 5, citing a rise in COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations.
The statewide mandate was scheduled to expire on Jan. 15, one month after it was reintroduced.
Among the indoor public spaces affected are retail stores, restaurants, theaters, family entertainment centers, and government offices.
Ghaly said residents should consider wearing higher-grade masks, not simply scarves or loose-fitting cloth face-coverings. He said many masks that people donned in the early days of the pandemic are “not as helpful today,” urging people to consider masks that are well-fitted on the face without gaps or ventilators.
Ghaly said that as of Jan. 5, 8,000 hospitalized patients tested positive for COVID-19. He couldn’t provide a breakdown of how many patients were admitted for reasons other than COVID-19 and only discovered they were infected when they were tested at the hospital.

Sonoma County is the first Bay Area county to restrict gatherings in response to the spread of the omicron variant in the region.
On Monday, the county banned indoor gatherings of more than 50 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 100 people while asking residents to "stay home as much as possible for the next 30 days and limit interactions with those outside of their immediate household."
“Our case rates are at their highest level since the pandemic began and our hospitalizations are climbing at an alarming rate as well,” health officer Dr. Sundari Mase said in a statement. “We are seeing widespread transmission occurring within unvaccinated groups as well as some transmission among vaccinated individuals.”
Sonoma County estimates that 78% of residents over the age are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. The new health order defines a gathering "as any public or private event or convening that brings people together in a single room or single space at the same time, such as in an auditorium, gymnasium, stadium, arena, large conference room, wedding venue, meeting hall, or any other indoor or outdoor space." Schools, places of worship and venues "open to the public as part of regular operations such as shopping malls, stores, restaurants/food facilities and museums" are exempted.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has denied parole for Sirhan Sirhan, the man convicted of assassinating Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, a source told CNN's Jake Tapper.
Sirhan was recommended for parole in August, after spending 53 years in prison for the 1968 killing. Two of Kennedy's sons, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. and Douglas Kennedy, supported the release during Sirhan's 16th appearance before the California Parole Board. But other family members felt he should remain imprisoned.
A month later, Robert F. Kennedy's widow, Ethel Kennedy, said in a statement that Sirhan "should not have the opportunity to terrorize again."
"He should not be paroled," she said in the September statement.
Through the review process, Newsom noted his penchant for Kennedy, telling reporters he keeps a framed photo of the former senator at the entrance of his office.
Newsom decided to reverse the parole board's decision after determining that Sirhan "currently poses an unreasonable threat to public safety," a statement from the governor's office said.
"The Governor reached his decision based on several factors, including Mr. Sirhan's refusal to accept responsibility for his crime, lack of insight and accountability required to support his safe release, failure to disclaim violence committed in his name, and failure to mitigate his risk factors," the statement said.
In a Los Angeles Times Op-Ed explaining his decision, Newsom wrote that Sirhan had recorded his plans to kill Kennedy prior to the assassination and that decades after the killing, "Sirhan began dodging responsibility" and also recently dismissed the "relevance of his status as an ideological lightning rod."
Newsom added that Sirhan, now 77, "remains a potent symbol of political violence."

(The Center Square) – A proposal to create a single-payer health care system in California received a key approval that will set the bill up for debate on the Assembly floor next week.
The Assembly Appropriations Committee passed Assembly Bill 1400 on Thursday, which would create a government-funded health care system in California known as “CalCare.” The proposal would expand medical coverage to all California residents under a single-payer structure.
According to a fiscal analysis by the Assembly Appropriations Committee, the bill could cost California between $314 billion to $391 billion in health care spending annually – a total that eclipses Gov. Gavin Newsom’s entire budget proposal of $286 billion for the coming fiscal year. Supporters of the proposal, however, say that a universal health care system would cost less than what California workers and employers currently pay for private insurance.
“With CalCare, we have the opportunity to move California to a single-payer system of pay for health care services – a system that countless reputable academic studies have concluded time and again will save our state tens of billions of dollars a year in health care costs,” Assemblyman Ash Kalra, D-San Jose and the bill’s principal author said during a hearing in the Assembly Health Committee last week.
With approval from the Appropriations Committee in hand, the bill next needs approval on the Assembly floor. Because AB 1400 was initially introduced in February 2021, it must pass the Assembly by Jan. 31 to meet legislative deadlines and stay alive.

As inflation caused by resident Biden's policies continues to drive fuel prices higher, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the international instability that's followed has resulted in a new record-setting highs at the pump beginning on Thursday: $5.067 per gallon on average in San Francisco — the first time a U.S. city passed the $5 mark.
Following Thursday's spike in San Francisco, California's statewide average for regular unleaded also crossed the $5 threshold for the first time ever to reach $5.074 per gallon early Friday morning while California's statewide average for diesel also set an all-time record of $5.335 per gallon.
Fuel prices elsewhere in the country continue to rise as well, and a 10-cent increase overnight drove the U.S. national average for a gallon of gas to $3.837 on Friday — 41 cents higher than one month ago, and $1.09 more per gallon than one year ago.
The folks at GasBuddy warned this week that San Francisco's record-setting prices aren't likely to be the peak of this surge either. As the weather warms in northern states, demand will increase and prices will rise along with it.
"Unfortunately, this record is likely just the beginning of a larger trend of price spikes to come to California and the entire country," noted Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy, on Thursday.

Voters in San Francisco have chosen to recall embattled District Attorney Chesa Boudin following a recall effort centered on his handling of rising crime across the city.
San Francisco voted to recall Boudin with 61%, compared to 39% who wanted him to stay as the district attorney, according to results at the time the Associated Press called the race.
Boudin was elected in 2019 with 50.8% of the vote and was sworn in as San Francisco's 29th district attorney on Jan. 8 2020.
He faced an onslaught of criticism over his progressive criminal justice policies as those supporting his recall pointed to an increased murder rate, violent crime, shoplifting, burglaries, and an open-air drug trade as reasons to vote for his removal from office.
He is the first San Francisco district attorney to be recalled, and only the second to face a recall election.
After news of his loss, Boudin said at an election-night watch party that his push for progressive policies in criminal justice and prison reform was not over.

The personal finance website looked at metrics related to a city's operating budget and the quality of the services it provides — everything from public school to transit — to quantify who's at the top of the list and who's at the bottom.
San Francisco came in at No. 149, making it the second-worst-run city in the country, according to WalletHub's metrics. Only our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., was worse.
"San Francisco ranked particularly poorly when it comes to long-term debt outstanding per capita, where it was second to last," WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez wrote in an email to SFGATE. "It also has the lowest quality of roads in the country — 18 times worse than No. 1 Jacksonville. The city did, however, rank better when it comes to its health and education numbers."
The study scored each city by measuring the per-capita operating budget against the quality of 38 services spread across six categories: financial stability, education, health, safety, economy and infrastructure and pollution. The city's credit rating by Moody's and the outstanding long-term debt per capita were considered under financial stability. Public school ratings and the high school graduation rate fell under education, and infant mortality rate, average life expectancy and quality of the public hospital system were among several factors weighed in the health category.
The violent and property crime rates, as well as motor vehicle fatalities per capita, were among those factors considered in safety, and under the economy category there was a long list of metrics including unemployment rate, median household income and share of population living in poverty. ***MORE

This does not surprise me. It may be better now but last time I was in DC, there were what appeared to be homeless people and beggars everywhere. In some parts of DC, it is dangerous to walk at night dangerous. One person in our group, has MS and uses a motorized chair. Many of the sidewalks were in disrepair and there was no such thing as handicap accessibility either at intersections or in buildings. To enter a building whether government and private you practically go through a strip search.
There was one good aspect to DC which was the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Getting around town using public transit was cheap and easily navigated. My two best memories of that last visit were having lunch in the Senate dining room and some of the restaurants around Dupont Circle.
It has been eons since I was in San Francisco. Even back when, it wasn't a city I would choose to live in. It's noisy and all those hills. Well, you would probably like running up them since it would be a killer exercise.

A new lawsuit filed in Los Angeles on behalf of a group of parents seeks to immediately halt any plans to bring back an indoor mask mandate on school children, claiming that the Los Angeles Department of Public Health “is using erroneous hospitalization metrics,” the Globe reported in July.
“On behalf of @LACountyParents, I filed a petition for writ of mandate and complaint against @lapublichealth, Ferrer and Davis. We cannot live like this anymore. If she proceeds with the new mask mandate on Friday, we will immediately seek a TRO,” attorney Julie Hamill announced on Twitter.
Hamill’s lawsuit names defendants:

Another Round Of Rolling Blackouts In California

This summer has seen repeated warnings in California that another round of rolling blackouts could be coming. (The last such round was in August 2020.). Somehow, before today, several close calls have been averted. But today, California’s luck seems to have run out. Even as I’m writing this post, California’s main utility PG&E has put some 525,000 customers on notice that rolling blackouts could be imposed this evening as the sun sets and power from solar arrays konks out.
Temperatures in California, particularly in the Bay Area, are indeed running unusually hot, although in most cases not all-time records. You won’t be surprised to learn that one mainstream press source after another attributes the power shortage and resulting blackouts to “climate change:” But the funny thing is, as hot as the temperatures are, they are no hotter than temperatures experienced this year — and indeed every year — in other states like Arizona and Texas. And yet those states are not having rolling blackouts caused by inadequate electricity on the grid. Nor have those states had rolling blackouts in other years when their all-time record temperatures have been set.
In other words, these blackouts have essentially nothing to do with “climate change,” and everything to do with criminally incompetent government policy supposedly responding to “climate change.”
Bloomberg has the latest with a piece from this afternoon headlined “California Says Brace for Blackouts as Heat Wave Drives Record Power Use.” It seems that the current heat wave is being accompanied by all-time-high power demand:
Electricity use reached 50.6 gigawatts at 3:15 p.m. local time, according to the state’s grid operator, surpassing the previous record set in 2006. The surge in demand comes amid a punishing and lengthy heat wave that has sent temperatures soaring past 110 degrees Fahrenheit (43 Celsius), prompting officials to plead for conservation and warn rolling outages may be necessary to prevent the system from overloading.
The state’s largest power company, PG&E Corp., said in a statement that it had notified about 525,000 homes and businesses that they could lose power for up to two hours. . . . For a second consecutive day, the state’s grid operator issued a level-2 energy emergency alert. Officials expect to ratchet that emergency up to level 3 at 5:30 p.m. local time -- which would mean blackouts are imminent.
Now, it can’t possibly have come as a surprise that usage of electricity in California is increasing to all-time highs. After all, California has been doing everything it can to induce consumers to switch all energy usage to electricity, and particularly to switch from internal combustion to electric cars. The automotive sector uses about as much energy in total as everything currently powered by electricity. Considering just the automobile sector, if everybody switched to electric cars, demand for electricity would close to double.
In response to increasing government regulations and jawboning, not to mention voluntary virtue signaling, electric vehicle sales in California have been soaring. Wikipedia here has a chart of sales of electric vehicles in California since 2010. From a base of around zero (actually 300 cars) in 2010, sales of all-electric cars have risen to some 176,357 in 2021, representing a 9.5% market share of all vehicles sold. Another 61,261 plug-in hybrids were also sold in California in 2021, constituting an additional 3.3% of the market, bringing the total market share for cars drawing electricity from the grid to 12.8%. Of course use of electricity is increasing.
And use of electricity for cars is set to increase far more, and soon. Just two weeks ago the California Air Resources Board put in place a new regulation requiring a rapid transition to a situation where only electric vehicles will be allowed in California by 2035, with interim mandates for percentage of electric vehicle sales going up every year starting with 2026. From CARB’s release:
The new regulation accelerates requirements that automakers deliver an increasing number of zero-emission light-duty vehicles each year beginning in model year 2026. Sales of new ZEVs and PHEVs will start with 35% that year, build to 68% in 2030, and reach 100% in 2035.
Note that the 35% mandated market share of electric vehicles in 2026 represents about a trebling of the 12.8% market share for those vehicles in 2021. With one point of market share representing about 18,000 vehicles, electric vehicle sales would appear set to increase immediately by some 70,000 per year or so, if CARB gets its way. Meanwhile, over in the market for production of electricity, here is what Bloomberg reports:
California has aggressively closed natural-gas power plants in recent years. . . .
California also shut one of its two large nuclear plants, San Onofre, in 2013, and until recently was planning to shut its last nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon, in 2025 (although it may be reconsidering that decision). And what is the replacement for these reliable power sources?
[T]he state [is] increasingly dependent on solar farms that go dark late in the day just as electricity demand peaks. . . .
Nobody seems to have figured out that you can cover the state with solar panels, and you will still get zero electricity from them after the sun goes down at night. Could they really be this stupid? Yes.
Read a few mainstream media sources about this week’s power crunch in California, and you will find that the official explanation is “climate change.” For example, from PBS today:
California is facing its highest chance of blackouts this year as a brutal heat wave continues to blanket the state with triple-digit temperatures. . . . Scientists say climate change has made the West warmer and drier over the last three decades and will continue to make weather more extreme. . . .

We currently have 3,000 MW of battery storage. To go "carbon free" we need 50,000 MW of storage - 17X more, and I don't know if the estimates account for the dozens of jurisdictions that force new residential and retail construction to connect only to electricity - no natural gas.

California is poised to become the first state to take legal action against medical practitioners accused of spreading COVID-19 “misinformation or disinformation.”
California Assembly Bill 2098 (AB 2098), passed Aug. 29 by the California Senate and now awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom’s signature, would subject doctors and others to disciplinary action — including having their licenses to practice medicine in California suspended or revoked — for spreading “vaccine disinformation.”
The bill, which states that some of the most “dangerous propagators” of inaccurate information about COVID-19 vaccines are licensed healthcare professionals, declares it to be “unprofessional conduct” for a physician and surgeon to disseminate “misinformation or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines.”
Gov. Newsom, who has until Sept. 19 to sign the bill, has not yet taken a public position on it, The New York Times reported.
The bill defines “misinformation” as any “false” information that is “contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus contrary to the standard of care.”

The Los Angeles City Council has voted unanimously to place on the March 2024 ballot a measure that would require hotels to accept the placement of homeless persons in vacant rooms. The measure would “require hotels to report the number of vacant rooms” to the city each afternoon for this purpose. In addition, it would impose a complicated permitting process on new hotel developments of more than 100 units, and require hotel developments of 15 or more rooms to include development of nearby affordable housing to replace any displaced by the project.
Members of the hotel‐worker union UNITE HERE Local 11 drew up the proposal and collected the 126,000 signatures. It’s part of a pattern in which unions have drawn up far‐reaching regulatory schemes aimed at employers which they have then presented to the L.A. city council for enactment by a signature process. Earlier, UNITE HERE had gotten the council to require hotels to adopt a variety of management practices favorable toward its interests, including providing daily room maintenance unless customers affirmatively opt out.

In the brief statement, Bass said she came home Friday to find signs of a break-in and that police were called. She said the thief or thieves stole two firearms, which had been “safely and securely stored,” but left behind cash, electronics and other valuables.
Bass communications director Sarah Leonard Sheahan confirmed to The Times that the guns belonged to the congresswoman and that they were secured in a lockbox. No one was home at the time of the break-in, Leonard Sheahan said.
Neither Leonard Sheahan nor Bass’ statement provided more details, such as what type of guns were stolen.
Bass, as congresswoman, was a militant gun control supporter. And she’s also running on a pro-crime platform of not enforcing laws and giving criminals a pass because of systemic injustice. The bill, which states that some of the most “dangerous propagators” of inaccurate information about COVID-19 vaccines are licensed healthcare professionals, declares it to be “unprofessional conduct” for a physician and surgeon to disseminate “misinformation or disinformation related to COVID-19, including false or misleading information regarding the nature and risks of the virus, its prevention and treatment; and the development, safety, and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines.”
Gov. Newsom, who has until Sept. 19 to sign the bill, has not yet taken a public position on it, The New York Times reported.
The bill defines “misinformation” as any “false” information that is “contradicted by contemporary scientific consensus contrary to the standard of care.”

The result will be a monthslong delay before the public can view results in English language arts, math and science for the state, districts, schools and charter schools.

If you like your gas furnace, sorry, you won’t be able to replace it with a new one. Californians were told during a heat wave a couple of weeks ago not to run large appliances or charge electric cars in peak hours. Soon blackout warnings could happen during the winter. Will Californians have to avoid running hot water and heating their homes too? Even in California, it can get chilly when the sun goes down.
These grid strains could be exacerbated by the Air Resources Board’s proposal to ban the sale of diesel and gas trucks by 2040. Such large fleet operators as Amazon and UPS would have to start making the transition to an all-electric fleet in a few years. Long-haul diesel trucks can go some 1,000 miles before needing to fill up, which takes 10 to 15 minutes.

Arnold decided to be a Republican when he heard Nixon speak in 1968 shortly after his arrival in the U.S. On the other hand his former wife Maria Shriver is a Democrat, so there's that.

This New York Times article on the failure of California’s high speed rail reminds me of the chapter “The Moratorium on Brains” from Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged.
In that chapter from the fictional book, everyone on a passenger train died because the train was controlled by politics instead of common sense.
This new article from the New York Times explains how the real world train’s ridiculous, absurd, irrational route was chosen based on politics instead of on common sense.
The New York Times article states:

You are welcome. Fortunately, I missed it. In 1966 my wife and I escaped the California rat race and moved to Oregon. Some of us luckier folks saw what was in California's future and others did not.
Many of our friends and family followed our lead, so there was not much reason to visit California. I doubt I am missing out on much. Even Disneyland get old after awhile. ;)

This New York Times article on the failure of California’s high speed rail reminds me of the chapter “The Moratorium on Brains” from Ayn Rand’s 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged.
In that chapter from the fictional book, everyone on a passenger train died because the train was controlled by politics instead of common sense.
This new article from the New York Times explains how the real world train’s ridiculous, absurd, irrational route was chosen based on politics instead of on common sense.
The New York Times article states:

My go-to example for CA waste, fraud, and abuse is the Bay Bridge retrofit debacle. Caltrans estimated the cost at $250 million, but it ended up at $6.5 billion.
Even if HSR existed, I’d have to spend several hours driving or taking at least two regular trains to get to the HSR station.

California's pricey and now-failed bullet train costs about $1.8 million a day, but without a light at the end of the tunnel on how it can be completed as designed, experts told The New York Times.
The bullet train sought to connect Los Angeles and San Francisco, but the only thing it has brought is red tape and a bulging bottom line: from $33 billion when planned in 2008 to be finished in 2020 to an estimated $105 billion in February to $113 billion now to be finished in 2030, the Times reported.
"There is nothing but problems on the project," State Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon complained.

California hasn’t created a railroad to the future but a warning to the rest of the country to avoid its delusion and folly.
California progressives tried to build a European-style high-speed rail network and alienated the French in the process.
A big New York Times piece on the rail project reports that the French, who wanted to work with California, decided the state was simply too dysfunctional and departed to help complete a high-speed line in Morocco instead.
The ongoing unraveling of California’s rail plan is an object lesson in how infrastructure as eschatology is a bad idea. If transportation is conceived as a way to save the planet and fulfill a deep-seated, quasi-religious fixation rather than as a means to move people around more efficiently, it is bound to fail. Throw on top California’s politicized decision-making and regulatory and legal obstacles to building, and it’s a formula for a boondoggle for the ages.
No matter how high California has estimated the cost of the project to be, it hasn’t been enough, even as almost nothing has been built. It started out at $33 billion in 2008. Now, it’s $113 billion, with no one knowing where the funding is going to come from.
Not that the California experience will diminish the progressive ardor for high-speed rail. As far as its enthusiasts are concerned, it is like socialism — never failed, just never truly tried.
President Barack Obama proposed an 8,600-mile high-speed rail system, and transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg wants the U.S. to be the “global leader” in high-speed rail. Progressives think of bullet trains like windmills on rails, a symbol of enlightenment and modernity, a way to free ourselves from the selfish, small-minded tyranny of the automobile and adopt a sleeker, greener, more virtuous future.
Then, the wheel meets the rail. In California, it might have sounded appealing to build a high-speed rail link between Los Angeles and San Francisco — if you abstracted the project from all the topographical and other difficulties. For political reasons, a less direct, less economical route between the cities was selected. And the decision was made to start building between the two megalopolises, in the Central Valley, creating the possibility that California may end up with a bullet train to and from nowhere.
Of course, we already have cheap, high-speed transport between population centers. It is called air travel.
As Randal O’Toole of the Cato Institute points out, planes cruise at roughly 500 miles per hour. The Amtrak Acela, on the other hand, has a top speed of 150 miles per hour. Yes, airplanes need infrastructure, but not expensive, complex new infrastructure all along their routes.
O’Toole notes that Japan’s high-speed trains seemed like the future in the 1960s, when air travel was more expensive than rail. Also, Japan’s high-speed trains had a ready-made customer base in the considerable proportion of the country’s population that already traveled by train.
In the U.S. today, in contrast, the average cost per mile of traveling by air is cheaper than traveling by rail, and a minuscule 0.1 percent of all passenger travel is via Amtrak.
If we built the Interstate Highway System, why can’t we build a comparable high-speed network? As O’Toole observes, the highway system basically paid for itself and accounts for a substantial 20 percent of the country’s passenger-miles and a roughly comparable proportion of freight ton-miles.
High-speed rail could never be a match. Even if you put aside the endemic cost overruns, the inevitable construction delays, and the considerable maintainable costs, it can only carry passengers, not freight.
While progressives swoon over high-speed rail as the shiny future, some other genuinely futuristic technology is likely to emerge. If the age of self-driving cars ever arrives, people will be able to experience a car more like a personal train, except unlimited by rails.

The rate of California businesses leaving the state more than doubled in 2021, leading a new analysis to posit that the state may be “risking its economic future.”
There were 153 companies that relocated headquarters in 2021, more than double the 75 that left in 2020 and more than triple the 46 that exited in 2018, according to a recent report from the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. The conservative think tank said economics was the primary cause of relocation, citing other states’ lower regulation, lower taxes, and lower cost of living.
Eleven Fortune 1000 companies were among those that exited California in the past three years. McKesson, the biggest U.S. drug distributor and number nine on Fortune’s list, left the state in 2018 for Texas. The Lone Star State is the most popular for relocations — Tesla, Oracle, Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Charles Schwab all left for Texas in the past three years.
There were 125 migrations of company headquarters from Bay Area counties since 2018, and if businesses continue to flee, it could have ripple effects on the region’s economy beyond just loss of tax revenue and job opportunities. “Another consequence will be the negative impact on the housing market,” said Suparna Chakraborty, UCSF Professor of Economics.
“According to professionals in the business relocation industry, our head count may be too low by a factor of five,” the report reads. “Moreover, our calculation does not take into account California businesses that are retaining their headquarters in California but who are making large facility investments in other states, such as Apple and Wells Fargo, who are building large campuses in Texas, and Disney, who is doing the same in Florida.”

This is not so much about Amazon as it is about the convenience of online shopping for both the consumer and the retailer. Instead of expensive to operate retail stores in malls and metropolitan areas, Nordstrom and other major department stores that operate out of warehouses which lessens operating costs like fancy stores, loads of employees including layers of management down to on the floor sales staff, shoplifting and security personnel and damage to the goods.
I had an interesting experience today when shopping at the local Walmart grocery store. While picking up a prepackaged container of raspberries in the produce section I notice an elderly lady standing next to me with two large containers of strawberries she had opened. She was literally picking through them, selecting the ones she wanted and putting them into one of the two containers. The container she kept had nearly twice the amount then the one she left behind. Which was half full with her 'womanhandled' berry rejects. This is disgusting on so many levels. I reported this to an employee. But by then the germy strawberry thief and handler was probably long gone.
Back when my grandmother was buying groceries, there was no such thing as a supermarket. If you were buying fruit or vegetables, you shopped at the greengrocer. Told him what you wanted and he would select and package it for you. Today, people can accomplish almost the same thing by shopping for their groceries online and either picking them up at the store or having them delivered. Amazon has both online shopping and instore shopping at select Whole Foods Markets with delivery and pickup options.

Southern California was already headed in the wrong direction which is what inspired my wife and I to move to Oregon in the mid 60's. When I was a kid, you could find me at Will Rogers State Park Beach every day from about 10:00 am to about 5:30 pm when it was warm enough which was most of the spring, summer and fall. When I was in high school, this changed to Zuma Beach which was great for surfing.
I miss going to a beach where the water isn't freezing. The ocean at Oregon beaches never warms up. The average temperature of the water is 49°F The beaches in S. Cal average in the 60 °F. You wouldn't think 10°F would make much difference, but it does.

Troubling new images reveal the hellish conditions of a makeshift camp on the California side of the US-Mexico border, where migrants and their kids huddled in garbage bags, begging for food.
The trash-strewn encampment — which popped up between a primary and secondary border wall in San Ysidro, hastily arranged by Border Patrol — is filled with people who were hoping to take advantage of the Biden administration’s end to the pandemic-era Title 42 and gain legal entry into the US.
Since that expired and has been replaced with tougher new measures, their future became uncertain. Video shot by a migrant for The Post just at 10pm Western time Thursday — an hour after the health-based regulation expired — showed scores of people huddled under black trash bags and tarps which they had attached along the bottom of the razor-wire-topped border wall.

If you aren’t familiar with San Francisco, it’s almost impossible to know how far the once-beautiful city has fallen or how bad a mark the homeless, drug, and crime trifecta has trashed its iconic streets.
New York reporter Elizabeth Weil wanted to dispel some of the horrible myths about San Francisco for her Curbed.com story, but, much to her dismay, she found those stories are far from “fake news.”
“When I set out reporting, I wanted to write a debunking-the-doom piece myself,” Weil writes. “Yet to live in San Francisco right now, to watch its streets, is to realize that no one will catch you if you fall.”
Weil notes the many vacant offices in the city and cites an article from the San Francisco Chronicle titled, “Cities Are Struggling. San Francisco Could Be in the Biggest ‘Doom Loop’ of All.”
“The phrase ‘doom loop’ was recently repopularized by Arpit Gupta, a finance professor at NYU, in a paper he wrote last year with two Columbia B-school professors called ‘Work From Home and the Office Real Estate Apocalypse,’ about the consequences for American downtowns of workers remaining remote,” she explains.
Applied to San Francisco, the “doom-loopy vision” the Chronicle article painted for the downtown area “was not pretty,” Weil says.
“Workers don’t return, offices remain empty, restaurants shutter, transit agencies go bankrupt, tax bases plummet, public services disappear,” she writes. “According to research from the University of Toronto, cell-phone activity in downtown SF is 32 percent of pre-pandemic levels. That number is 75 percent in New York.”
Five days after the “Doom Loop” article came out, Cash App founder Bob Lee was murdered.
“Immediately people invested in the doom-loop narrative started mouthing off,” Weil writes. “‘You know, where he was killed used to be a good part of San Francisco,’ Lee’s friend Jake Shields told me, as he told anybody who would listen in those first few days.”
Shields, like “everyone with brains” had left San Francisco, Weil reveals:
Never mind the fact that violent crime rates in San Francisco were pretty low, lower than in most American cities of comparable size, lower than in San Francisco in years past. SF was a cesspool! — that was the doomers’ argument. City leaders, along with the rest of the populace, were “too compassionate, like so compassionate that they do not care.”
“The result, according to Shields, was not just an office apocalypse,” says Weil. “It was unmitigated, spiraling, homicidal doom.”
“You can do whatever you want. You can sh*t in the streets,” Shields said. “The logical next step is to start killing people.”
The reporter recounts run-ins with drunks, drug addicts, and the security guards who are forced to deal with them.
“On Market, near 6th, a security guard stood in front of Blick art supply,” she writes. “He’d just ejected a man who had been smoking fentanyl inside the store, a man his bosses suggested he should refer to as ‘an unhoused guest.'”
“In the first three months of 2023,” according to Weil, “200 San Franciscans OD’ed, up 41 percent from last year.”
One security guard likened the state of San Francisco to the “feral ghouls” found in a video game.
“It’s like a wasteland,” the guard said. “It’s like the only way to describe it. It’s like a video game — like made-up sh*t.”
“Have you ever played Fallout?” he asked. “There’s this thing in the game called feral ghouls, and they’re like rotted. They’re like zombies. I go home and play with my wife, and we’re like, ‘Ah, hahahaha, this is SF.'”
Laughing at “rotted” fellow humans?
“There’s only so much pain a person can take before you disintegrate, grow paranoid, or turn numb,” Weil notes.
The guard continued to text her following their meeting, she writes, asking, among other things, “Did I know that some of the street addicts were rotting, literally: their decomposing flesh attracting flies.”
She points to Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent trip to the Tenderloin, ground zero for the city’s fentanyl crisis. Following his brisk walk through the devastation, the progressive politician called out the National Guard.
“Almost certainly it was a political stunt,” Weil writes. “But did it even matter? Something needed to change.”
“A poll from the controller’s office found that San Franciscans felt less safe in the city than we had in 27 years,” she continues. “And of course we did. Everywhere you looked, you saw it billboarded: The social contract had ruptured, and we’d ceased to believe we could fix it. The city often seemed to operate like an incompetent parent, confusing compassion and permissiveness, unable to maintain boundaries, producing the exact opposite result of what it claimed to want.”

This is one thing that is likely not Donald's fault. The problems San Francisco is faced with is more the fault of local and state government. Just as is the case with most big cities with problems in the U.S. including Portland, OR.

Speaking of Portland, Nordstrom is not closing its store in downtown Portland. When I read this, I was frankly surprised because I thought they planned to close it. They did close their store in Clackamas Town Center, an eastside Portland shopping mall. On the other hand, REI is closing their Portland store located in the Pearl district next year supposedly because of an increase in crime and theft.
Interesting how shopping habits change over time. There is a growing trend to return to the small-town shopping outside shopping prototype. Bridgeport Village in Lake Oswego is a good example of a current trend in retail shopping. Back in the day, shopping malls where the bomb, now a lot of them all over the country are having difficulty getting tenants and staying open. The California Legislature is proposing a program to provide unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants coming to and residing in the state.
Senate Bill 277 by State Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D-Los Angeles) proposes income assistance to unemployed “excluded workers” who are not eligible for regular state or federal unemployment insurance benefits due to their immigration status.
Perhaps even more horrifying, this program would be administered by the Employment Development Department and implemented upon appropriation by the Legislature of sufficient funds to carry it out.
Currently, the state’s employers pay for unemployment insurance.
This is the same EDD the massive fraud was perpetrated against during the pandemic. “The current estimate is that the EDD lost about $40 billion to illegitimate claimants, including prisoners (and not just from California prisons), garden variety local scammers, and international fraud rings, all of whom simply walked right into the department’s completely unprotected system,” the Globe reported.

It has been many decades since I've been to San Francisco so I would not know whether it really looks like a third world country or whether this is simply how the media choses to sensationally portray it because it sells. Often in person these problems seem less than we thought they were. This was the case with the Portland BLM riots. The media made it appear as if the whole city had gone up in flames and broken storefront windows, when in truth it was a small area of downtown. This is also true of the homeless problem. Their trash laden 'campgrounds' are plenty bad... but they are not nearly as prevalent as the media would like us to believe.

BREAKING: California Bill Would Charge Any Parent Who Doesn’t Affirm Transgenderism With ‘Child Abuse’
A recently amended California bill would add “affirming” the sexual transition of a child to the state’s standard for parental responsibility and child welfare—making any parent who doesn’t affirm transgenderism for their child guilty of abuse under California state law.
AB 957 passed California’s State Assembly on May 3, but a co-sponsor amended it after hours in California’s State Senate on June 6.
Assembly Member Lori Wilson, D-Suisun City, wrote the bill and introduced it on Feb. 14. State Sen. Scott Weiner, D-San Francisco, co-sponsored it. Wilson’s child identifies as transgender.
Originally, AB 957 required courts to consider whether a child’s parents were “gender-affirming” in custody cases. Wiener’s amendment completely rewrites California’s standard of child care.

Last summer, a large wildfire that came to be known as the Oak Fire scorched its way across California's Mariposa County and threatened Yosemite National Park. First reported on July 22, 2022, the Oak Fire burned more than 19,000 acres of land, cost more than $90 million, and evacuations forced the displacement of thousands of Californians and visitors in the fire's path as it rapidly expanded.
"Experts say dry air, strong winds, parched trees and grass and soaring temperatures caused the Oak fire to expand rapidly through the rugged foothills in recent days. The area has experienced nearly two weeks of triple digit temperatures and low humidity," The Guardian reported of the Oak Fire as it spread. "All this comes at a time when the state is seeing increasingly destructive and deadly blazes and the climate crisis creates conditions ripe for destruction."
Taxpayer funded (in part) PBS emphasized that the Oak Fire was one of the "devastating consequences" of the "global climate crisis."

Over at CNN, Chief Climate Correspondent Bill Weir explained how a "'megadrought' driven by climate change that is affecting California and other western states has left plenty of dry, flammable material that can become fuel so quickly, especially when humidity is low and winds are high."
"The National Park Service is preparing for more wildfires to come as climate change fuels extreme droughts and record high temperatures across the west and Rocky Mountains," added Forbes.
Democrat politicians, such as Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), also couldn't let the devastation caused by the fire pass him by without demanding "climate action NOW."

ABC News reported that a "bone-dry environment combined with scorching temperatures and ample fuel -- all consequences of climate change -- is what allowed the Oak Fire to spread so rapidly from the moment of ignition," according to scientists who warned, "as climate change progresses, we anticipate fires like this one to continue to happen with greater frequency and burn larger areas."
Well, there's just one problem: the scientists and climate change-pushing outlets here failed to consider at the time that the fire might not have been the result of a global climate change crisis and, instead, could have been the handiwork of an individual who financially supported Democrat politicians as well as the Lincoln Project.
This inconvenient truth comes courtesy of a report from The Washington Free Beacon:
Authorities busted a Democratic donor for allegedly starting a "ginormous inferno" in Yosemite National Park. Democratic politicians had insisted climate change was to blame for the blaze, which destroyed more than 100 homes and injured several firefighters in July 2022.
Edward Fredrick Wackerman (his actual name) of Mariposa, Calif., faces a number of charges including aggravated arson following his arrest on Friday.
By the numbers: The arson suspect has donated $1,775 to Democratic candidates and committees since 2020, government records show, including a $1,000 donation to Tim Ryan's failed U.S. Senate campaign in 2022 and $400 to the Lincoln Project, a disgraced liberal super PAC.
Maybe, just maybe, Democrats and other congregants of the Church of Climate Change ought to focus on the actions of their own ilk — mainly asking them to put the matches down — instead of telling Minnesotans they can't use gas-powered lawn mowers any more, demanding Californians switch to electric vehicles they'll be subsequently asked not to charge due to grid instability, and seeking to destroy the reliability of the nation's power system by forcing reliable and cheap generation plants off-line through executive fiats normally found to be unconstitutional.
Some forest management and the occasional controlled burn wouldn't hurt either to prevent any future (alleged) Democrat firebugs from sparking devastating infernos.

My problem is I forget to use them. Sometimes they expire and some of them end up lost. Regardless the reason businesses make out because they essentially were paid in advance for merchandise or services they never had to provide.

A new measure in Los Angeles, called Measure ULA, is set to generate $900 million in taxes that will then be used for housing subsidies and tenant protections. The tax is essentially a levy on all property sales of more than $5 million, according to Bloomberg.
This "mansion tax", if it passes, will look to "speed new construction and deliver a way out of the city’s spiraling homelessness crisis", according to Bloomberg. California's population began to decrease in 2018. Some of the reasons for this are a decline in birthrate, high cost of living, high taxes, high labor costs, and high housing costs which loom large in this dynamic. For example, existing single-family homes sold for a median of $859,800 in August 2023, compared to $834,740 in August 2022. That's a 3 percent increase, and it's more than double the national median of $407,100.
The increased crime rate mostly affects the quality of life in California's large cities. While this probably results in some people moving, they are not necessarily moving out of state, but rather out of the cities.
For the same reasons as above, Portland, OR has seen a decrease in population as have many cities all over the nation.
In 1966 when my wife and I moved from California to Portland, the main inspirations were an increased quality of life and a lower overall cost of living, mostly having to do with housing costs. We were paying $275 a month for a 2-bedroom apartment in West Hollywood, CA. We rented a 3-bedroom house in Portland for $82 a month, which included water. My coworkers asked why we chose to live so far from downtown. That cute little Dutch colonial house was 76 blocks (approximately 12 miles) from downtown Portland.

That's crazy because I had the same experience. I've been all over the US, including Oakland. Many years ago I was going to a meeting, I made a wrong turn and wound up in "the hood." I swear it actually felt and looked like the clouds suddenly covered up the sun. I did not stop. lol

While leaving Washington Heights - Little Dominican Republic area of NYC on I-95 and approaching the Washington Bridge, she asked me to pull off the highway because she needed to use a restroom. I refused because looking from the HWY it appeared all the buildings were nothing more than gutted shells. The view was otherworldly and scary. I doubt we would have found an open McDonalds or other fast food restaurant with a restroom. I read that Washington Heights, NY is a vibrant neighborhood today.

It’s really gone to shit since. There were RVs on blocks running generators, various pieces of furniture in the middle of the road, and fires burning in steel drums.
The hotel where I stayed in 2001 was now surrounded by a high fence, and a guard was on duty at the parking lot entrance 24/7, asking for your room number.
We went to Denny’s for dinner, and the parking lot was almost empty. We were one of two customers, and the prices were 15-20% higher than here in Riverside County.

Your memory is undoubtably better than mine. I just remember my mom's request came just prior getting on the Washington Bridge. She was living in Queens with her longtime lover and eventual 3rd husband.
The buildings in the YouTube video of the South Bronx you posted are what I remember seeing. The windows had no glass just gaping holes where the windows once were.

My uncle Bill and aunt Dorothy lived in Bronxville, NY. 15 miles from NYC. As you can see, it is nothing like the Bronx or South Bronx.

Your memory is undoubtably better than mine. I just remember my mom's request came just prior getting on the Washington Bridge. She was living in Queens with her longtime lover and eventual 3rd husband.
The buildings in the YouTube video of the South Bronx you posted are what I remember seeing. The windows had no glass just gaping holes where the windows once were.
Since The Little Dominican Republic wasn't founded/named until 2018, so it obviously was not in existence in the early '80s.
My uncle Bill and aunt Dorothy lived in Bronxville, NY. 15 miles from NYC. As you can see, it is nothing like the Bronx or South Bronx.

95 cuts through the top of the South Bronx, and then it's 3,500 feet across Manhattan to the George Washington Bridge. You probably saw the SB mess and associated it with Washington Heights.
IIRC, after crossing the Harlem River into Manhattan, much of 95 is enclosed or underground.

When I rented an apt in NYC I bought and installed a window AC unit. After I bought an apt I installed multiple window units. It's what adults do for comfort, and no law or ordinance was needed.

Judge Curtis Kin's ruling still allows Beverly Hills to move forward with any new residential developments, but prohibits the city from issuing permits for residential renovations, commercial developments or any other construction projects.
The affordable housing advocate group Californians for Homeownership filed suit against Beverly Hills last year, accusing the city of skirting state housing laws for years.
For more than 50 years, California law requires cities to have a compliant affordable housing plan that spells out where housing for people at various income levels will be developed.

It’s really gone to shit since. There were RVs on blocks running generators, various pieces of furniture in the middle of the road, and fires burning in steel drums.
The hotel where I stayed in 2001 was now surrounded by a high fence, and a guard was on duty at the parking lot entrance 24/7, asking for your room number.
We went to Denny’s for dinner, and the parking lot was almost empty. We were one of two customers, and the prices were 15-20% higher than here in Riverside County.
At 1:30 you can see an RV in the background. There were many along that street that were running generators; it was like a street-long shanty town.

“The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group, on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting,” Proposition 209 read.
Though the California Senate in June 2020 had voted to strike these words from California’s Constitution, Golden State voters overwhelmingly rejected the proposal (56–44%).

In the desert around Scottsdale, Ariz., on Monday, police officers hunted for a member of an international heist ring suspected of swiping jewels and luxury goods from homes across Los Angeles. Using helicopters and drones, they eventually found him hiding under a tree.
The wanted man, it turned out, was a 17-year-old from Chile.
Authorities say the teenager and his two adult accomplices later admitted to breaking into multiple homes, part of a growing trend of “burglary tourism” from South America.

Increasingly over the last five years, police officials say, thieves from South American nations have entered the U.S. for the purpose of committing robberies.

Thousands of jobs have already been eliminated by California’s law to raise the minimum wage to $20 for restaurant workers, which goes into effect April 1.
For eight years, Michael Ojeda delivered food for a Pizza Hut in Ontario, California, using the income he received to support his family.
In December, the 29-year-old received a letter from the pizza franchise informing him that his employment was being terminated in February. The news shook him.
“Pizza Hut was my career for nearly a decade and with little to no notice it was taken away,” Ojeda said, whose story was recently highlighted by the Wall Street Journal.
Ojeda appears to be just one of the thousands of casualties of a new California law that will raise the minimum wage for fast-food workers to $20 an hour on April 1 for all restaurant chains that have at least 60 locations nationally.
Making $20 instead of $15 sounds like a win, but economics shows there’s no such thing as a free lunch. California lawmakers just proved it.

It seems only yesterday that California’s population was nearly 40 million. Then more people left the state. Now we’re not even at 39 million.
The U.S. Census Bureau reported in March that California’s population as of last July had dropped to an estimated 38,965,000. That’s down by 75,400 in a year — and 573,000 below California’s peak of 39.5 million in 2020.
Entering this century, when California’s still-growing population was 34 million, we were predicted to reach 45 million by 2020 and almost 60 million by 2040. So much for that.
People have been fleeing this once-Golden State. And the exodus accelerated on Gov. Gavin Newsom’s watch.
