Nasty soy protein that won't mix up.

I remember Dan Lurie as the "Sealtest Strong Man" on early television. He had a unique performance act during which he would loft what appeared to be a cannonball high overhead then catch it behind his head on what likely was his trapezius and neck area. He wasn't a Steve Reeves but he caught a young kid's eye and attention. Rest in peace Dan.

Can we now argue if he was natural or not?
-
He was definitely a unique person. You can learn more about Dan at www.danlurie.com. Tim Fogarty did a great job building it

RIP, used buy Muscle Training Illustrated back in the day!

One of the major icons of the Iron Game, and the last of the five major muscle mag publishers, after Hoffman, Rader, Weider and Kennedy.
His MTI mag had a much more rugged bent than the Weider mags, concentrating on strength as well as size, and very little fluff. He also had a Wrestling Training Illustrated magazine as well, for a short time. No soap-opera bullshit for bullshit's sake. No Triple-Split programs, and endless Arnold routines, etc.
He had a big annual show with the WBBG Mr. World, America, etc, every year. Boyer Coe won the WBBG Mr. World during Boyer's heyday for about 5 years in a row, prior to Boyer finally entering the IFBB.
Lurie mentored and promoted Ferrigno during Lou's early years in his magazines. That is, until big Lou suddenly became a Weider student.
RIP to Dan

:)lou and dan in " happier days " before weider convinced lou to sue dan as weider had convinced serhio o and arnold to also sue lurie. he was very litigious

Lou was in MTI as a bulked up teenager. Truely, it was Lurie who believed in Ferrigno.
-
as i look back i have a better appreciation for lurie's mags they were better than weider's at the time 60's- till early 70's plus they had an east coast leaning to them.

no, no really....

Sadly, Lou turned on Dan Lurie, calling him a "Dirty Jew" and sued him in court. I wonder if it was justified. Lou also sued his dad and his brother as well.
"You dirty Jew son of a b!tch. The happiest day of my life and my father's life will be the day you get buried." — Lou Ferrigno

The old days are long gone. Recently the last three muscle magazine publishers died. Weider, Kennedy and now Lurie. In the fifties and sixties there was a big rivalry between Weider and Hoffman. Weider was always the bad guy because he tooted his own horn too much. Not that Hoffman was far behind. When Sergio got suspended by the IFBB, Dan Lurie had him in the rival Mr Olympus that Sergio won twice. As Hoffman faded Kennedy and Lurie had more exposure via their publications. Ironman lost its founders when the Raders passed away but sold the business to John Balik before they died.
Dan seemed to annoy a lot of people but in retrospect the musclemen weren't paid much by any of them which is a real pity. Zabo always said there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in bodybuilding. Arnold found his gold in Hollywood then real estate.
In 1968 I took a photo of Arnold outside Golds Gym but I sent it to MTI and not Weider. I was pleased to see it published by Dan.
-
RIP I read an interview with Lurie a while back. He came across as a straight shooter. He said that Arnold got calf transplants. It was the only thing Lurie said that seemed in any way controversial, so I kind of believe him.

Vince, keep in mind that Grimek, Lurie, Eiferman, Pearl, Coe, Arnold, and many, many others went into bodybuilding related businesses. None of these guys believed that they were going to make a living or get rich simply by taking off their shirt and posing.
None of the guys who competed in AAU events were ever paid a penny by Hoffman or anyone else. Did they think Joe or Dan were going to write them big checks because they competed in the IFBB or WBBG?

RIP. Iron brother.

Weider was always the bad guy because he tooted his own horn too much. Not that Hoffman was far behind. When Sergio got suspended by the IFBB, Dan Lurie stepped in to promote a rival Mr Olympus that Sergio usually won. As Hoffman faded Kennedy and Lurie had more exposure via their publications. To correct some statements: the three publishers died within 573 days of each other, not 'this last year'.
When Sergio was suspended by the IFBB it was years later that the Mr. Olympus started (1976) and Sergio won it twice out of four times it was held. The 1975 event was Mr. Olympia International which he won.
Both Raders were still living when Balik bought Ironman.

Thanks for the corrections, Joe. I corrected my post.

Zabo always said there was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow in bodybuilding. Arnold found his gold in Hollywood then real estate.
Vince, Zabo actually did find his "pot of gold" at the end of the rainbow, by working and living at Gold's Gym.
That's what he loved and he spent much of his time doing just that.

lou waited till matty[his father ] died before he started sueing his brother over such things as andy's building being painted green and a picture inside the store of lou being displayed. you'd think he'd help his brother out by making an occasional appearance at the store.

Lou was upset over his placing of 2nd at Dan Lurie's show.
that would be the 1972 wbbg pro mr america won by bill grant with lou in 2 nd and warren frederick in 3 rd. by the way the same tony babal who introduced lou to dan lurie came in 7 th.

lou's first cover was MTI may of 1972, his next cover was july 1973 iron man. he wasn't on the cover of a weider mag till may of 1974 a full two years later. he didn't make it onto the cover of hoffman's mags till 81.

With the heaviest heart I could have ever possibly imagined, I am writing this email to inform you of the death of my grandfather, the legendary Dan Lurie who died on Nov, 6 2013 under suspicious circumstances. He was the greatest and most extraordinary man I have ever known and the love I have for him knows no bounds. The fact that his son Mark Lurie as well as others at St. Francis Hospital on Long Island have been questioned by Homicide Detectives regarding their roles in his passing and that they will be in attendance at his funeral while the case is under investigation has made this time so much more painful for those of us closest to "Grampa Dan The Muscle Man". I swore to my grandfather that I would get justice for his untimely death and those involved will eventually be exposed and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Meanwhile, please join us to honor his memory and celebrate his spectacular life at a unique memorial service on Sunday, November 10th at Boulevard Riverside Chapel located at 1450 Broadway in Hewlett, NY 11557. Doors open at 10:15 AM service will begin at 11. The family will be sitting Shiva following the burial on Sunday from 5PM-8PM and Monday through Friday from 1PM-8PM at the home of my aunt Sandy Lurie located at 805 Pond Lane in Woodsburgh, NY 115598. Please help us share this information with as many people as possible so that my grandfather can get the send-off he deserves. - Ian
