I had a look at all 358 images from the Olympia at MD. What surprized me is that only 3 or 4 guys had aesthetic physiques. Many looked like crap including the first two guys. The monsters joined the looking like crap guys.
If judged as an aesthetic contest then Ronnie Rockel wins. Dexter would win but his calves are atrocious. Speaking of having 'no' calves maybe we need a division for all those guys who just don't have calves? Most of the black guys would be in this division except Taylor and Martinez.
The only two guys who were really cut were Dennis Wolf and Paco Bautista. Wolf had the smallest waist relative to his shoulders. Sure just about everyone could produce abdominals when required but they looked smooth when standing around. I am worried about Jackson's abs.
The top 5 for aesthetics were Rockel, Jackson, Martinez, Henry, and Taylor. In a group just missing out are Gunter, Alves, and Anthony.
The worst aesthetics award go to Charles, Warren, Bautista, and Coleman. Cutler is not far behind because of his ab pose. James and Ruhl would look much better at about 40 pounds lighter bodyweight.
Do these guys even look in the mirror before they compete? Only two guys cutup and everyone else, including Jackson, carrying too much weight.

I agree on Rockel getting screwed for a 2nd straight year, he has one of the best overall physiques out there now and he does not get rewarded for it.

I rate that photo being the best from the Olympia. Rockel's back wasn't quite up to his front but he was still the best overall. He just suffered when standing next to the giants. Ditto Dexter.

We actually awarded a trophy to Chris Dickerson after the Mr Olympia and the trophy was taken to LA from Australia. Just about everyone was upset over the 1980 Mr Olympia.
Rockel at least deserved to be ahead of Darrem Charles! What an insult.

I remember when I was new, I kept to myself until I knew who I was dealing with, I have yet to even come close to a Meltdown and I must say too many newbs feel the need to express themselves without thinking about what they are saying first.

the standard shouldnt be the guy who won the mr o last year.(comparing cutler to ronnie).the standard should be who has the best physique on stage that night regardless if the guy is unknown or how competitors looked last year.(melvin winning ) There are 100 bodybuilders around the world who are better than cutler.

This is the one thing that I hate about bodybuilding in general. It is more of a name recognition that an actual contest. There is no way that Ronnie and Jay should have been 2nd and 1st respectively
I would argue that if an unknown walked onto the mr. olympia stage with the best package that he wouldn't win.
People like JJ, Darrem, Alves, RR et al will forever be overlooked in the IFBB

If you go by db from the back then clearly Culter wins. I don't endorse that pose as deciding who the Mr Olympia is.

That second picture you posted of Cutler you cannot even see his right side. It is in the shadows. How can you make a fair comparison when the guy is in the shadows? Look at his upper left lat. Completley in the dark.
Also the Mr Olympia has been decided from the back since Haney was winning Sandows. Dexter has great detail but he is to small to compete with Ronnie and Jay. I know that is not what bodybuilding is supposed to be about. But that is how it is these days.
Even in that picture Jay has better thickness and size. Not to mention his hams/quads/calves are bigger and more detailed.

Yes, I agree that small guys suffer in the comparisons. That happened to Dexter, too. Clearly those comparisons are important but so are inspecting images that are all the same size. Unless and until we include some objective judging we will always have controversial contests. Just because Ronnie Coleman and Jay Cutler overshadow Rockel doesn't mean they have superior physiques. From everything I have learned about bodybuilding I still say Rockel had the best physique on stage with Dexter Jackson and Victor Martinez competing for 2nd place. Coleman and Cutler have distorted physiques and have lost the beauty they once had.

We had weight classes in the past but the heavier guy always won the overall. I have judged contests where the smaller guy won the overall. It merely needs better judges. Seems to me that is not going to be easy to find them.

Jay owned Ronnie in that pic IMO. Ronnie may be more aesthetic, but you compare each bodypart and see who wins.

Bodybuilding was traditionally about having a beautiful, fully developed body. Size, proportions, symmetry and definition were important as well as general appearance. Somehow those ideals were lost and instead monsters with bizarre physiques were winning the Olympia. Rockel has a superior physique to Culter and is light years ahead of Coleman. Sure, Coleman is a giant and amazes wannabes. So what? Inspect his physique and compare each of the guys here. You might change your mind.

Jay edges him out in these:
Front double bi - Rear double bi - reat lat - side tri - front ab - most muscular.
I give Jay the nod in this case. His chest, lats and legs are all bigger and as/if not more detailed than Ronnie's.

No, here is you posting favorable pictures again. Once again look at how dark the shadows on Cutler are. Not to mention the angle favors Rockel. He still does not look better in that shot. He is just hitting the pose better. Jay looks about the same with about 50 lbs more muscle. Rockel has great shape but he is way to small to beat Ronnie and Jay. That is bodybuilding today. You post these pictures that are clearly bad shots of the person in question and claim that they tell the story. Everyone at the O including 5 of the most respected pros,Ron and most of the magazine editors where qouted on this very site saying Jay looked amazing and deserved his win. Pictures tell about 50 percent of the story.
Here is a shot of Jay and Ronnie fully in that pose. Clearly taking Rockel to school. he does have a better ab thigh than both Cutler and Coleman. But Jay and Ronnie own him on every other pose. It is not hard to find good pictures of a BB and bad shots of others to try to prove an argument.

Jay is a great bodybuilder but has lost some body beauty in his quest for the title. He did what was necessary and the title is now his. Good for him. That still doesn't mean he looks better than Rockel. In the side by side comparisons I give it to Rockel as a better physique. If you compare the images at the same size then Rockel even looks bigger than Cutler in some poses which is amazing. I agree that when they stand next to each other Rockel looks small as does Dexter. I wasn't there so I really can't insist. However, when it comes to aesthetics there is no doubt Rockel is superior to everyone except Dexter. Rockel's proportions are better than Dexter's because of his calves.
