Which of these would you give your 401k to manage?
« on: September 13, 2017, 09:02:47 AM »
So who are they?

1. Robert Frey. Cofounder of Renaissance Technologies one of the most successful firms in history.

2. Hugh Hendry, bit of a lunatic but made 50% in Oct 2008

3. Sushil Wadhwani, bit of a washed up quant, ex Bank of England governor. I think he is mostly an economist and not so great as a manager.

4. Kyle Bass, made a high return on low asset base short subprime, then went long mortgages after. But lost a few hundred bucks shorting Japanese bonds and is losing money shorting Chinese Yuan.

5. Rob Beller, notorious blow up artist. Peloton ABS fund lost 100% in 2007.

6. Jon Paulson, did ok as a boring merger arb guy. Then one of his analytsts put on the short subprime trade and he made $10b, he has pretty much lost it since then

7. John Meriwether of LTCM... He also blew up in 2008 with JWM Capital.

8. Mike Platt of Bluecrest...

9. Ralph Cioffi of Bear Stearns Structured High Yield fund, as 40x leveraged sub prime bond fund which was one of the early blow ups in 2007.

They all have the same mentality.  I'll grow your 401K by 10% a year while I grow my income by 300% in the same time frame.

If we all listened to Vince a few years ago and dumped a lot of cash in Bitcoin we'd be fucking rich but then again if we all listened to Vince a few years ago and dumped a lot of cash into Bee Pollen we'd all be fucking broke.

Damn right.

The government controls your money until you are 59 1/2.  The only way you have access to your money is if you get fired or quit your job.  If you are under 59 1/2, you need to pay a 10% penalty on whatever you withdraw.

The funds in your 401k skim you 3-5% a year.  They charge fees, commissions and expenses during the time you are in them... these are usually not disclosed unless you read the fine print, which most people do not do.  The fees can be exorbitant depending how heavily managed the funds are.

Scam.

So, any of you economic geniuses (genii?), what's the best way to make a few grand work for me and grow modestly, instead of a 401k?  Serious question.  I don't want to gamble in the stock market.
