Title: Any of you ever gone homeless before?
Post by: ShipSekki on June 03, 2010, 05:57:42 PM
I was once homeless for 6 months. It was by choice. I didn't go broke or have anything terrible happen to me, I just chose to be homeless to see what the life was like, to have adventure, and to shake things up from the boring and dull life I was living.

It goes down as the most interesting, exciting, fun and memorable time in my life. I plan on working for a couple more years, then i'm gonna return to that lifestyle.

Any of you ever done it before?

Interesting.  I have heard this from people that just said "fucking let it all go" they said the same as you its getting away from constraints of society that gives you the pleasure. Now my problem would be what would I eat, where would I sleep?

Lived out of my car for two months while I had to get back on my feet. Was rough. I wouldn't do it again, but it was a good experience overall I would say.

At first I had a van and was sleeping in that.

After a few months I ditched the van and just carried a tent. I was spending most of my time traveling in the forests of northern Cali, Washington and Oregon, so it was just kind of like a camping trip everyday. I tried to avoid the cities, but I did stay in Portland and San Francisco for a while.

Eating is no problem. If you are an intellingent homeless person you can find jobs to work or otherwise figure out ways to get food and money. I did some odd jobs and made crafts and sold them and stuff like that.

 I don't know about that.

Lately i've been living in the big city, working a professional job, in the rat race, and I feel like an asshole.

Two more years of money making and I can get away from this BS again and be free.

Wait, that's basically what Christianity is. A cult that grew way, way, way too big.

I crashed for free in a trailer park for a year or so during college.  Was a good move, looking back.  Nothing was more fun than walking around with a crew of armed old vets kicking out illegals and homeless riffraff who made there way into our park.

Yep understood I would like to do this but to let all go is a challenging experience the unknown is thing most of us are afraid of.

I'm talking about being truely homeless.

For me, I was living in a van for 3 months. I'd drive to different spots, park the van and sleep in it. Usually stay in each town for 3-6 days then drive on the the next town. I slowly made my way from San Francisco to Seattle like that.

I sold the van in Seattle because the transmission was fucked up. And then I was just 100% homeless. Walking around with the big backpack, hitchhiking sometimes, hooking up with crazy hippies and crust punks and getting rides with them, etc.

For a while I was living in the deep forests of Oregon and was basically living like a tribesman. It was just awesome. I didn't miss any of the material comforts I left behind.

I told my family that I moved to Portland Or, and got a job out there. Because if I told them I was wandering around homeless they might not appreciate it to much.

I miss it. After getting back into the rat race again. I miss it a lot.

Start off small. Try doing it for just one weekend or maybe 4 or 5 days. Load up your backpack just like you would if you were homeless, and do everything just like you would if you were homeless. Just get a taste of it and see how it feels.

That's what I did, and I liked it, so I went bigger.

 A 20?

Being homeless in the USA is so easy. People will give you more money than a job will pay.

I never gave a blowjob to anyone for a ride.

I usually had a good amount of weed on me though and i'd smoke with whoever gave me a ride. Sometimes i'd give up some gas money, but usually the people would just refuse on the money. I almost never had anyone turn down a bowl of herb, so that was the usually form of payment.

 Working hard is for chumps.

I've spent way too many years working hard. I'm done with that bullshit.

I'm making good money now though and I finished college, so i'd say i'm successful.

But I just don't think financial success is all that important. The wealth of the soul is better.

For the last 3 months I was really homeless. I had the money but wasn't spending it. And was living the homeless life in just about every single way. I met many other homeless people, some of them totally broke, and I was living on the same level as them.

True homelessness as normal people think of it is when you don't have and money, income or residence and can't find any friends or family who will let you stay at their place. Choosing to be homeless has a completely different vibe.

Do you get it?

Some of you all think that "real homlessness" means being totally broke and fucked.

There's no such thing as "real homelessness" though. There's just homeless, or not homeless.

Most homeless people do have someone or something to turn to. They just choose not to for whatever reason. I met many homeless people who had hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank. Who left high paying jobs. Who had family members they could stay with, etc. I met other who made lots of money doing odd jobs, selling drugs, or whatever and made tens of thousands of dollars but they simply chose to be homeless.

If you're liviing without a home. Sleeping outside. Living on dollars per day. You're homeless. It depends how you define homelessness I guess.

Nobody would beat my ass for anything. With almost everybody I met I was totally honest about who I was and what I was doing. Nobody gives a fuck. Many of them were doing the same shit.

The kind of homeless people who were totally down and out, angry and fucked in the head were the ones who I avoided anyway.

Hmm let's see, certified moron who is apparently now a college graduate willingly went homeless and lived in the woods of oregon for several months with *with* thousands of dollars in the bank.

Why didn't you use said thousands of dollars to fix what was probably a small problem with your van? Also, you do realize the backwoods of oregon are freezing fucking cold and it's pouring rain 9/10 days out of the year? So, to be clear here, your van went down and instead of fixing it you hiked right into easily the coldest and most uncomfortable part of the united states and stayed there for several months. When did you become a survivalist? Do you even realize how incredibly tough and uncomfortable living like that is? What were you eating? How were you keeping warm/dry and clothed?

Again, why didn't you fix the van? And now, you live where again? And work what job that allows you to post 24/7 for what has been several months now?

I smell BULLSHIT. I smell a poor indian who lives with a rich uncle who probably molests him and sits on getbig all day fantasizing about the life he wishes he could live. If we ever really saw sekki, he's probably EVEN SKINNIER than what we have seen any walks funny due to a perforated rectum. I feel bad for ya bro, I really do, but these stories have to end. Noone is buying into your bullshit.

Dude just stop. I would bet damn near anything you have never met anybody with hundreds of thousands in the bank let alone a vagrant wandering around oregon. Or, at least let's admit you are stupid enough to believe these people...

I didn't fix my van because it was a very expensive repair. And it was a cheap old van with other problems, so it wasn't worth it. When the transmission is fucked an an old vehicle, it's best to just sell it usually.

Also, like I said before, I WANTED to be homeless.

In Oregon I slept in a hiking tent I had. I'd put straw under it to keep it dry and put a thick blanket over the top for warmth. I also had a very, very thick arctic sleeping bag. It was warm enough. For food and shit like that I hiked into nearby towns or went to stores on the road. I learned a lot about wild plants and stuff and ate them. I even snared some animals.

I barely spenty any money. I made money selling necklaces I made. Worked some "agriculture" jobs. And did other shit.

There's nothing unbelievable about it. Go to Northern Cali or Oregon and you'll find thousands of people doing the exact same thing. And they all hang out with each other, help each oter, and watch out for it's other. It's a huge, deeply rooted homeless culture of hippies, punks and stoners.

If you've never been to that area you probably don't understand it at all.

There are lots of guys like that. They would say shit like "I sold my house and said goodbye to it all."

I'd say. "So you have money from selling the house then?

 And they'd say yes.

And these guys never begged or hustled for money, they just had the money.

Bollox complete and utter bollox you were not homeless, you may choose to be houseless, but homeless means so much more than just making the decission to live life like a beachbum.

I was homeless for 3 month of my life and when I mean homeless I don't mean like you which is of course fun when you have a bankaccount that isn't empty ::) - I was homeless no food  no place to stay no money, nothing ok?
And you are the biggest douchbag if you think it is fun, so let me pop that bubble over your head so I can make you come back to reality, its extremly degrading and unbelievable hurtful, it is not fun and nobody in his right mind would choose to live like that.

What book did you read recently that made this all sound so cool? I spent 3 days on the Rubicon jeeping with some friends, it was barely 45 during the day, low teens at night, raining and cold the entire time. I can say with complete honesty it was a great experience but one that I would NOT do long term. Not having a shower or anything to keep you warm, impossible to stay dry- just being cold and wet that long was just awful. Unless you are some kind of hardened special forces ninja I highly highly highly doubt your story was anything like this. More like, you spent a week slowly driving up the coast and checked out some of the smaller towns, explored the small roads that go nowhere etc. You forget, I live in San Jose, have lived on the west coast my whole life. I have family in Oregon. You living out in the open in california? Maybe. On the outskirts of a major city possibly. In some very very harsh terrain in the freezing cold and wet? No fucking way. And bro, there are NOT thousands of hippies doing the same thing. I hate to break it to you, but almost all of the land not within city limits is owned by the state and patrolled by troopers. You might stay out there a day or two but you're bound to run into a trooper at some point and telling him you are "finding yourself' or whatever bullshit isn't going to work. For sure you will be fined and possibly arrested. They have designated campsites for a reason. Your story is a little entertaining but reeks of ignorance. Sorry bud.

I've spent way too many years working hard. I'm done with that bullshit.

I'm making good money now though and I finished college, so i'd say i'm successful.

But I just don't think financial success is all that important. The wealth of the soul is better.

You're just a fucking pussy. Straight up. And you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. You sound like a dumbass who thinks he knows it all but is just talking on shit he's never seen first hand.

Yeah, the cold and wetness and all that is uncomfortable, but if you have the right water proof gear and do everything the right way, it is really not too bad at all.

People have been living the nomad life since the beginning of time. Now your stupid spoiled ass is trying to say it's impossible.....

I'll be glad to tell you anything about the experience you wanna hear. But don't come at me saying it isn't real. Maybe you're too much of a pusssy to do something like that but not all of us are.

And i'm not talking about San Jose. I'm talking abour far northern cali, like Eureka, Willits, Fort Bragg, Mount Shasta, Redding, places like that. Out there you can just live in the woods and nobody will find you if you move your shit every day.

Your homeless experience was degrading because you had self-pity.

Without self-pity, there is absolutely nothing degrading about it.

People choose to live that way for spiritual reasons. But if you do not have any spiritual reasons for living that way, I can can see that it might be a bit hellish.

But it's all in how you look at it.

 Homeless culture is different everywhere.

In Oregon and Northern Cali where I did it. Most of the homeless people had a spiritual, mystical hippies thing going on.

In lots of other places, like Arizona and New Mexico, or SoCal, it's just more rough, mean and hardcore.

Then go to other countries and it's radically different in every place you go.

Homeless culture is very complex. You all are acting like you've got it all figured out though. Very closed-minded views i'm seeing here.

Usually i'd sneak into the showers on university or community colleges campuses.

In fact, that's one thing I tended to do a lot was stay close to college campuses, they have a lot of resources.

Sometimes I would find showers by the beach. And if none of that it available i'd just do a bucket wash.

Sometimes I bathed in a river or ocean too, but that shit was cold so I wasn't too into it. Some people did it all the time though in the icy water.

Sometimes I would just get naked in the rain.

No I got in a lot of fights as a teenager, a long time ago.

While homeless I never got into a fight.

And actually I never had any big problems or conflicts with any other homeless people or anyone else. I ust avoided shady characters and was very careful about where I slept. And I usually slept in very hidden places and kept all my shit well camoflauged. So I just wasn't seen.

I think the dangers of being homeless are exaggerated personally. As long as you are street smart and knowhow to do things the danger rate can be minimized really low. You just have to take the time and effort to do things properly and smartly.

But in cities it is more sketchy. Most of my experience was in small towns and wilderness.

I meant uneducated people.  You said you had to work your ass off just to barely keep from being homeless.  That really sucks.  I feel bad that people have to work like dogs just to keep from living on the streets.

That's all it was.  I'm just thankful that I went to college so I don't have to worry about that.  It's good to hear what it's like for your kind of people.  Those of us who went to school don't always get to hear how hard it is for people with barely a high school diploma.

When I was far away from towns and low on supplies I sometimes set up snares and ate whatever got caught.

 Squirrels and rats.

Some of the hardcore bums would eat that shit every day. I just did it in emergency situations a few times.

So you think that there are no people who went to college who are homeless?

Why would you think that?  You don't have to make gigantic assumptions in order to prove a useless point.
There's homeless people that went to college just like there are wealthy people that never went to college.   Sometimes you just have to speak in generalities and assume no fuckface dumbass on the internet is going to assume you're speaking in absolutes.

In this case I was wrong, because some fuckface dumbass on the internet did assume I was speaking in absolutes....

I just feel bad that Coach had to work his ass off just to barely keep himself from living on the streets.  The typical person with a college degree has the ability to get a job that allows him to keep from being homeless without "working his ass off."

Try to keep this short.  in the mid 90's when i was doing really good and living very well and had a beautiful condo overlooking the ocean on the 34th floor of the Voted Best Multi living building in Hawaii and a nice car and everything going great.  I basically had someone steal every penny I had.  I first ended up living in my office then a short while in my car (just a few days).  I didn't want anyone to know.  It was funny cause when I lived in my office which was just for a short while I had this girl come over.  We slept on the floor and she started crying.  i asked her what was wrong and she said she felt so sorry for me.  Shit I had a $6000 coffee table in my place I ended up selling to my friend for $500.  Anyway, I only last about a couple weeks total homeless then I moved into a huge 8,000+ sq ft house in one of the best areas of Honolulu.  So it wasn't to bad.  And when I was young and got kicked out of my house I was homeless for awhile.  No big deal.  Makes you stronger and appreciate when things are going good.  Of course that didn't always work for me.

"Uneducated"?

Hahahahahahaha, classic post. Another getbig million air who doesn't have to work "that hard". IMO not working hard = lazy. The old adage "don't work harder, work smarter" is the biggest bullshit line of the century. Admit it, you're just lazy..LOL!

Now Keith how did you get from homeless to a 8000 sq ft house in a couple weeks?

Well I actually rented one of the bedrooms downstairs by the pool.  This lady was renting this huge house in Waialae Iki which is a very nice area of Honolulu.  It was two floor with a dumb waiter and a kitchen downstairs, pool and large yard.  She rented out all the bedroom to people,.  There was a realtor who lived there, a diamond broker two contractors.  It was a great place.  We barbqued almost every day and we all got along.  We kept one bedroom open so if any of us had family who wanted to come over they could stay there for free.  So my daughters always came over.  We had 3 huge parties each year where 200 to 300 people would come.  All business owners and political people.  The lady owned a big flower shop.  Rent was only $600 a month for the one bedroom.  I had a private entrance that was next to the laundry room and opened out to the pool.  I lived there for about 3 or 4 years.  I went looking around for some other places cause I never lived with anyone before.  I always lived on my own so sharing a place was different but because it had the private entrance and everything it was really cool

Sounds really interesting. I'd like to hear more. Stories, experiences. I'm all ears.

How did you get out of being homeless, were there social services that helped?

I tell you how and part of it is painful to think about it.

In the few month I was homeless I was hanging out in a video store were I knew the person working in quite well - greek girl (I will be forever thankful to the person her name was Elena).
One day I come in and she says there was a call for you...
This was extremly unusual since how should anybody know to call there for me? surely not my parents since they I broke of contact with them and they had no idea what happened to me.
So I answer call back, and a father of a girl called that knew me from other friends and by briefly chatting with me, I was like 17 at the time - She said she convinced her family that they have a hotel in the blackforest and they want to give me a second chance.
Completely random incredible when I think about it now.
So I get picked up and all, i get a room, I get a job (no pay cleaning dishes) but I get food and a place to stay and to start all over again - i never forget the first time sleeping in a bed after like I dunno 3 - 4 month sleeping in trains and at the end in an abandoned house in deep black forest winter in a sleeping bag (unthinkable now)
But I was a complete prick at the time and completely wreckless, things did not go well and when the woman of the house asked me to hover I found an ear ring on the ground and for some reason I took it too my room and she accused me of stealing, I cannot remember why I took it to my room but I left it on my night drawer so I wasn't intending to steal it at all I didn't even see the value in it - but she did not believe me, also the girl lend me some of her money to buy new cloth and I of course fucked it up and did not pay it back.
One day things went to far and the father talked to me (I think the mother never wanted me but the father and the kids were really decent and good people) he said i need to find a job so I was real lucky to find a job in a restaurant and that was that.

Overall I still feel real bad about that experience I got a second chance from that family and fucked it up - bitter memories - without them there would have been no end, I joined the army very shortly after that and I got straightened out.

All my life i always had people like that, people that went way way waaay beyound what they should do in order to help me and I always fucked it up somewhat :(

Sorry to say you are full of shit you wouldn't know the first thing about homeless ness, as the other member said you read a book somewhere and thought yeah that sounds cool I pretend ::)
As I said - living rough and sleeping rough in a city is completly different to just taking a break with a nice cushy bankaccount you can fall back on when things get a little rough, lol i cannot even comprehend how full of shit you are.
You strip your decency and your pitty the minute you come home and your door is closed the lock is changed and the black plastic bags outside your place contain your cloth, the first night I sleept in a telephone cell by minus 10 black forest winter my friend - friends bahhh forget that, you've got no friends anymore they all turn their back to you after you ask them the second and third time to sleep in their place, money - WUSSSH gone thats it you have no income and I never begged (couldn't do it but I bet I would have done it easy in another month).
So how do you make money - you steal - I got so prudent I just walked into a cloth store took 3 jackets and walked out, you don't give a shit all you think is that you need money for a little bit of food.
You dignety is gone as soon as you are picked up by the cops and they tell you that you stink, when you try to tell them that you cannot shower since you are afraid of the fucking creeps in the homeless shelter they just laugh.
It takes a few hours to become nothing and it takes max a week to feel like nothing.

I meet so many people rough that would have begged for a difference in their life but after a year sleeping rough you are not part of the society and you are mentaly fucked, you accept your life you start drinking drugs what else.

Fuck me don't even fucking dare to tell me you know better cause you don't kiddo.

Good post Stark now why do think you always fucked things up when people were trying to help? Sounds like the universe has been taking care of you.

Probably linked to my past, my parents (biological parents) were both drug addicts and left me pretty much in their kip by myself for 2 weeks - I was starving didn't know how to sleep in a bed and all that stuff with 3 years old.
I don't want to excuse my past behaviour with my past, but I have talked to people that have a lot more brain then I have, and they have said that I dont and never will fully trust people which is something you learn when you are an infant and which I obviously did not learn.
So I pretty much expect everybody to fuck me over sooner or later.

Like I said a lot of reasons.

Yes because community colleges abound out in the woods. Your shitty story is breaking down by the minute.

When I was far away from towns and low on supplies I sometimes set up snares and ate whatever got caught.

 Squirrels and rats.

So you went from some suburban kid to John Rambo catching and preparing squirrels and rats with your stoner hippy friends? Bullshit. You wouldn't have a damn clue how to do this without plenty of background. I doubt the ghost of Jim Morrison appeared to provide guidance either.

Did a family of Bigfoots take you in and show you how to power walk through the dense Oregon bush to all the cool colleges and universities they have hidden in there? What is the favourite course. How to avoid being filmed, 101?

I didn't stay in the woods 100% of the time you idiot.

Most of the time when I was in the woods I was less than a mile away from a small town with shops and stuff. I usually had a grocery store a 10 minute hike from wherever I was camped out.

I never claimed that I was living off the land all the time. Although there were a few times when I did this for a few day stints. You're just making straw man arguements.

Before I went homeless I spent about a year working on a farm in a small town of 2000 people, learning about the land. Learning hunting, gardening, trapping, and lots of other homesteading and survival skillls.

That's why I was successful at my homeless stint. Because I was ready for it and knew exactly what to do.

So I wasn't a suburban kid before I did it. Thanks for the lame straw man arguement though.

Sounds really interesting. I'd like to hear more. Stories, experiences. I'm all ears.

I've got too many stories to tell.

Being homeless in Oregon is really mellow and easy. You run into other young homless people all the time and they wil help you at and hang out with you. Most of them are really young, like late teens and early 20s and most of them are counter-culture like punk, hippies, whatever.

Since I was 26, a little older, I usually got respect and nobody fucked with me much. And I knew when to get really serious when someone was challenging me, so I never had any big problems. I did see some fights and robbings and stuff. But usually they happened because someone was talking shit or someone did something stupid or whatever.

I went down to SoCal at the end and it was different there. Lots of hard drugs like Heroin, crack, meth, etc. More hardcore and more violent. same thing in Arizona.

In Oregon and Northern cali it was like a fun camping trip, down in the southwest it was more brutal.

Because he canceled his lease and went on an interesting trip
he was technically homeless.
If he kept the lease and paid the rent on his room,
while out camping it would be a low budget
vacation adventure.

This is a good discusssion; obviously a lot of us differentiate between houseless and homeless.  Like SS, I find comfort leaving the pursuits of the material world behind and spending the night in a tent or my own debris hut/shelter in the forest.  I'm not at the stage where I feel ready to go totally homeless as some would call it, but I could see myself going houseless for some time in the future maybe.

In two years when I move back to the USA I plan on travelling all over the country. I'll try to hit at least 25 or 30 states. I can't wait :)

SemenSucky got the idea for this thread from the giving up lifting thread.  Yes, he is completely full of shit.

As for me, I have never been homeless per say, but I did spend 3 months living out of my jet.  Times were tough but I survived.

I'm really surprised that so many people here don't believe this story. You all are acting like i've told some totally over the top tale.

All it is was was me travelling like a bum for 6 months. Is this really so hard to believe? It's not like it's difficult or crazy to do it. It's a pretty easy thing to do.

It's a pretty simple fucking thing. Millions of people are doing it right now on this Earth.

Maybe you all have lived incredibly dull and boring lives, void of adventure and risks. But I havn't.

I think this topic would have fared better if you would have used another term instead of "homeless", maybe something like "Have any of ya ever been a lazy bum for awhile?". Yeah it doesn't sound as catchy, but at least it isn't as offensive as saying homeless.

People are just acting like little bitches in this thread, that's all.

Stark, if you still have emotional issues from your homeless experience, go see a therapist. It doesn't mean every homeless person is as miserable as you were. Lots of homeless people are happy being homeless. But course lots of them aren't too.

Starks parents left him alone starving for 2weeks, when he was
only 2 or 3 years old.
I feel so sorry for him.
He is deeply emotionally damaged and I am surprised he is
not a crackhead, Nazi, or locked up.
He is one of the guys that can say as many retarded or sick things he wants
I would still be ok with it.
He is venting here, but therapy would be better(for the sake of
your baby and wife stark).

Actually stark used to be a skinhead. And he says he still wears combat boots and bomber jackets.

He's a fruitcake with daddy issues. So he's trying to be a badass.

Stark now you are paranoid, nobody is looking for you.
You dont need to hide.
I am saying you are basically a good guy that suffered emotional trauma.

Ah I see a little Nazi during his youth, pretty normal under his circumstances.

My friend is saying that is ghetto slang for taking babies away from crackers
she is right?
Or you mean your parents lost custody after that incident?
Or you mean you are also addicted to the gore porn at 4chan?
Anyway you must relax and take it easy man.
Breathe and be mellow.
Getting pissed of together with lack of sleep is not good.
Wifey and baby will feel it in the air, negative vibes you know.
