Training Triceps BEFORE chest?
« on: February 10, 2008, 04:23:28 PM »
My arms are poor.

Should I train triceps, THEN chest, on Chest/tricep day?
Would pre-exhausting triceps first make them work harder during chest?

Same with back/biceps.

thanks!

4 days? ok, no problem.

Day 1 : Back and light biceps
Day 2:  Chest and light tris

On both these days you do the main bodypart first and finish off with the bis and tris

Day 3: Legs and shoulders
Day 4: Arms

Arthur Jones' programs were the opposite.  You pre-exhaust the pecs via DB flyes or Nautilus chest machine (direct resistance) then immediately go to the bench press or dips (indirect/compound resistance).

The pecs are stronger; the triceps are the weak link, so preexhaust the pecs, not the triceps.

wrong, very wrong. chest is always the weak link, benchpressing is msotly shoulders + triceps.

If you want to do triceps with chest, I say GO GOR IT.

Start out with a power tricep pressing movement, then move on to chest movements, then back to lighter tricep stuff.

If not, then u can hit up a seperate arm day:

1, Chest + shoulders
2, Legs
3, Back
4, Arms
follow the arrows

have a decent chest workout and follow 2-3 days later with a heavy triceps workout.  i usually do chest + biceps, then shoulder + triceps, although a good combo is back + triceps as somebody mentioned above.  heavy close grip benches and heavy dips work well for me, other triceps exercises are there just to fill in.

DANTE / David Henry been doing bicep first on a biceps back day. He brought his arms up tremendously with that method last year.

It's all theory shit;

Mr. Cortisol, if your goal it to prioritize triceps, do them first and to isolation only movement on chest while on this program. Your chest will be in maintenance mode but can't have it all at once in life. But this is second best, arms day is the only way to prioritize correctly.

haider is right.

Same with back/biceps.

thanks!

The pre-exhaustion principle is a good one and I utilize it when I want to focus on a particular part by removing the work done by secondary muscle groups.  In your example, training triceps first will wear out triceps and allow you to recruit more of your chest muscle fibers when you perform specific chest exercises since the triceps are already worn out.  I would also imagine since they are more exhausted you would feel that as you do the chest exercises.  Same with biceps and back.

That said, have you considered incorporating Will Harris' routine into your regimen?  Here is a brief video below to illustrate it:

you do have a pretty good chest...

I can make my chest, back, legs and triceps sore for the a couple of days

but biceps I need to put in a monster routine and it is still not guaranteed to be sore..

4 days no problem:

1. chest and abs
2. back and bis
off
3. shoulders and tris
4. legs
off
off
repeat

so your tris get worked twice, once with chest (indirectly), then on their own.  great mass training program for only 4 days/week.
you are gay.

Isolation only = ???

Any "non heavy" Delts/Tri heavy involved pushing type of movements:

Flat Flyes
Cable cross over
Dumbell press with emphasis on the inner squeeze
Even machine press to some extend
