I don't know.... I never lose that much strengh exept on the squat when I get leaner.

arms get small and flat as shit everytime tho

I thing shoulder and chest.
I just had shoulder surgery, and can only dumb press 15lbs.
pathetic when I was doing 55-65 8 mos ago.
Most are all show no go!

I just had shoulder surgery, and can only dumb press 15lbs.

Couple of months ago I could do 32.5kg dumbbells for 6 reps shoulder press; today I couldn't even hoist 30kg above my shoulders, let alone get a rep... :-\

The squat might go down because your belly gets smaller.

Strength loss will depend on your diet, and how fast you are losing the weight, along with your workout routine and rest.

For example, if you are doing a low carb diet, then your glycogen stores will be depleted when working out...this happens even when your not dieting, but normally, you would eat a very high carb meal or drink after the workout to replenish glycogen.  A lot of people on a low carb diet wont do this b/c of the carbs.  Its okay to drink a gatorade during or after workotu while on a low carb diet though b/c this is one of the cases when it bypasses its normal route and goes into the muscles instead to replenish the glycogen stores.

If you are cutting calories too low too fast, then your energy and strength will go down as well.  Better to do it in small intervals. 

A lot of people change their routines when dieting b/c they see some strength loss.  Try to hold onto the basic compound exercises as long as possible and try to just "maintain" instead of gaining. 


I noticed when I dieted the first time my strength went to the toilet, but I made a lot of the mistakes I talked about above.  Either way, though, you will always lose some stregnth, but you can probably minimize the damage by doign the above.

I usually stick to low carb but today was a pigout day so I was totally carbloaded...still...I been sleeping (even for me) poorly the whole week...so maybe that has something to do with it...hopefully next week will be better.

thats a really good point debussey

big belly allows for big weight on leg exercise, i remember when i first start trainign i was doing 12 plates a a side on leg press with full reps.... but only because i had a monster belly to bounce my quads/knees off of to get the weight back up.

And when fat, your range of motion on leg presses is drastically shorter.

When i diet i try my hardest just to maintain strength. Yesterday at the gym though my brother kept saying how much weaker he was on shoulder press so maybe it is true. My thoughts are you will notice it more on exercises where you lift heavier weights. So that makes sense why people say shoulders. Now with bench it is easier to cheat and bounce the bar to keep the same weight whereas you can't do that with shoulders.
