That could be a major factor that could explain your apparent lack of expected results - remember that you are pushing your body into being in a state it's not naturally wanting to be. Recuperation is an integral part of the equation and if your sleeping is messed up enough to throw things like your hormonal balance out of whack, you're not going to get out of training what you'd expect to get.
Just out of curiosity, have you had a complete medical and seen how your hormonal levels are? It's easy for people who have trouble sleeping and are stressed from working to have very low test levels, which isn't going to help your quest to get a better body any.
