What part?  Tokyo?  Roppongi is probably the easiest place to have a night out since it's full of whites, which frankly can be a relief after full immersion.

A pretty interesting place indeed, would love to go back some day.  Definitely a weird feeling being white, and a minority there.  Lots of really nice people... a very respectful culture.  But... in the same breath, you don't have to spend much time there to experience racism.  For a white person, that just doesn't happen in North America.

QFT.  On the upside (depending on your point of view), I found it to be a very male oriented culture in my short time there.  If you're with a woman you will be treated as the one who is more important, which might piss off a western woman.

Just be easy going and keep a friendly look on your face, since they might mistake a look of confusion for displeasure, especially if you're a big dude.  If you are going alone, you'll probably find two extremes when meeting the Japs - the one's who are very friendly, curious about you, keen to talk, and easy to meet with nothing more than a 'hello,' and the opposite extreme - the ones who have zero intertest in breathing the same air as a gaikoku and make it obvious.

Make an effort to learn some basic language skills before you go since it will cast you in a good light.  Also, Japan is one of the most interesting places in the world imo from a cultural standpoint but you need to be able to understand what you're looking at.  It's not obvious or accessable to the uninformed westerner.  Read up on Japanese notions of beauty.  Garden architecture is a good place to start.  I know that sounds weird but the uniquely Japanese arts, like Jap garden design or poetry, will show you threads of thought that run through Japanese history and society and which you will see over and over if you know what you're looking at.  Learn some history and get an idea of the significance of places you're planning to visit, as well as the origin and significance of popular Japanese activities like theatre or sumo, or even baseball.  It would be a shame to go all that way and not understand what you're seeing.

Obviously, get educated on social gaffes to avoid such as not taking off your shoes when required (have shoes that are easily removed and replaced btw) or eating in public, but it's not as complicated as most whites make it out to be.

Start at that Huge Nightclub in the big crossing of Roppongi.

Then visit the softcore Seventh Heaven nearby.

After 24.00  go down to Gas Panic

Take a girl home with you to the hotel.
Don't be disappointed  if it might be some UK/US/AUS/Euro girl you end up with
since many of them are lonely and hang out there.

2 days later, early morning or around sunset, go to some quiet temple garden
thousands of them there and some are incredibly beautiful and peaceful.

Japanese Cherry Blossom time is beautiful truly amazing at some spots.

Also daytime, go and see the people dancing on the closed street.

Some weekend: Yoyogi park is more fun than Central park

You must visit electric shopping city at Akihabara it is awesome.

Go and swim in the hot springs and stay in a traditional Ryokan.

It's a myth. fucked up quality of life yes, "hard working working working" nope.

Typical white colar jap: gets up around 7AM, takes about an hour and a half to get to the office, gets there around 9:30 10, then gets off at 5:30, maybe 6PM then hits the "bistro" because the subway shit is packed until 8PM with the "boys", hence the "work" culture,  then gets home around 9 or so...

I've been there while working for Motorola... I've been to Sony's, Toshiba, LSI... all same routine... maybe it's just high tech... but still

I don't know who you're working with bro, but I have to tell you what I've experienced is totally stereotypical.   I work for a japanese company, work with japanese and know about a hundred japanese guys living in japan right now....The average work day is about 13 to 14 hours.  I know japanese guys (plural) that have had to be hospitalized because they were working too much (ulcers/exhaustion).  My  boss is japanese and I can tell you if I send an email at 3 AM he will respond within 10 minutes every single time.

It is true that even when they leave work they don't go home, but go out to bars, lounges instead.  The women don't ask any questions, their job is too keep the house clean, the food cooked and the kids in line.

Anyway, back to the original topic...

Don't listen to any of these stereotypical things...You can look them all up on the internet...Go see a shrine blah blah blah; do all those things, but if I were you I would defniitely:

1. Get as much different food as you can. American's focus on sushi but you can honestly get the same sushi at a high end place in nyc or boston.  Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki and definitely Yakiniku (korean bbq), in any local spot you can find, preferably in tokyo

2. Get a japanese guy to take you to a high end karoake club.  They have girls that will sit and socialize with you, which sounds weird but is pretty fun once you start drinking and singing.

The funniest thing is seeing the role-reversal of western women looking around desperately for attention since the western guys have many other options lol it's refreshing.

The Office Ladies in the areas mentioned above will be a good start. Keep in mind that there's barely any religious influence there on the whole therefore they're up for anything. :D

Japanese guys love "power drinking" beginning immediately after work, don't be shy. You'll see the evidence on the subways as they throw up on the way home. :-X

Another funny thing is hard-core japanese porn comics with vivid back and front covers, widely read by guys on the subway. You'll have some dude voraciously and quite openly leafing thru one of these right beside a mother with a 4 year old looking on at the mag. ;D

LMAO, Sebastian is so jealous of me because his fiancee ran away from him that his whole life revolves around having fantasies about me and my japanese wife.

What a sad loser you are, Sebastian. Can't take on the man, so you resent to insulting the wife. You romanian gypsies have less class than an indian train.

LMAO, what a self owning.
