I only train back once a week and always go heavy. All together about 1.5 hours in the gym with stretch and warm up. About thirty sets in total? Right after my post meal I tell you I cannot keep my eyes open. I'm not really a nap guy. But on back day it's like I have no other choice. I could fall asleep standing up.

No actually. Today was;
Pull over machine four sets for warm up light weight and good stretch
jack hammers 3 sets
40#, 60#, 75#,
one arm row 2 sets
100#, 120#
Close grip Ronnie rows in the corner 5 sets
2 plates, 3 plates, 4 plates, 5 plates, 6 plates
4 sets bb row
135#, 180#, 225#, 180#
six sets of pull-ups to failure
4 sets of hyperextentions no weight
Is this really that excessive? This is only once a week.

Did back today, was thinking today and the other day that it's one of the most exhausting areas along with legs. Can understand the nap, after hard workouts or work i often do the same thing. A powernap's proven to be a great resorative meaure.

i wouldn't count the warmup sets, only the ones to failure. so that's only 15 sets or so.

Peaceful invitation. Come to Timesquare. We hit it hard there. Great bunch of people there. Basement gym with Puff Daddy right outside the front door! All I'm saying is that after training back I eat then take a nap. I really don't count anything. I listen to my body and walk out the door. Reading Getbig makes me recap on what I did and write whats on my mind. Last week Puffy changed the billboard. I couldn't find a pic of it.
-
so 15 sets to failure is not overtraining?
-
How many do you propose? It's a big muscle group no? I only do back once per week.
-
only 1 set to failure is needed to signal new growth and strength
i say do 3 sets total for back
-
no wonder you look like shit.....puny f@ggot
so what if cheftim is doing 1 set of deadlifts at 750 pounds for 21, 1 set of barbell rows at 405lbs for 20 reps and 1 set of 90lb weighted pullups for 20 reps? i think thats better than a bunch of phu phu easy breezy cheesy machines!

Seems like a totally reasonable routine to me, except hyperextensions are pointless as I see it. Definitely not overtraining if you have some experience lifting. I only do back once a week. I usually do something like:
3 sets pullups (warmup)
deadlifts 1 plate, 2 plates, 3 plates, 3.5 plates, 4 plates
bent-over rows - 135, 155, 185 (strict form)
one-arm rows - 80, 90, 100, sometimes 110
pull-downs or cable rows, whatever is available without waiting, whatever weight feels right but as heavy as i can with good form
I usually don't feel too tired after. But leg workouts, forget about. I'm done for the day after a leg workout. Just go home and eat a lot and pass out.
-
Yes I too enjoy naps.

Yeah, back and legs are killers for me. If I come home and sit down, I could pass out (sleep) from the work outs. I, like you,am not a "nap" person either.

What are jack hammers and Ronnie rows?

What are jack hammers and Ronnie rows?
I believe Ronnie rows are similar to bent over rows only instead of a barbell you use ronnie coleman
