Dude should have walked away from both her and kid and let the real father do his job... But obviously he had faith in her and she destroyed him to the point he wanted to kill her and himself. We also dont know if what happened between them wasnt reminiscient to him of some stuff that happened between his own parents which often when you realize you just reproduced blindly something that already happened can break you for real, breaking the illusion you had to have "control" over your own existence. It's unfortunate he didnt have someone else beside her to get support from.
