Anybody watch that idiot bring it out of the endzone?  Unreal.  Sub-50 IQ for sure.

They did.  After NE scored to cut the lead, they kicked off deep instead of an onside kick.  The deep return man caught the ball in the endzone.  All he had to do was take a knee and the game is over after Buf snaps the ball a couple of times.....but oh no, homey had to bring it out and fumbled on the 30.  NE recovered and a Brady TD later and the Pats win.

He said he was "trying to make a play..."  He should have known the play to make was to protect the win, instead of personal glory.  Those are the kind of mistakes that HS players make, certainly not professionals....and he is a great kick returner!

He absolutely did the right thing there.
If he woulda kneeled down, it wouldn't have been enough time to run the clock out.  It wouldna been 3 and out, letting brady back on.  They needed to try to get some yardage in order to either kick 3 pts or set the patriots offense far enough back.

Dude did the right thing in returning it.........      The WRONG thing occurred in reaching out for the extra yard while being tackled.

But in returning the ball, he most certainly did the right thing in playing the team they were playing against.

You couldnt be more wrong...

Taking a knee while going backwards to catch the ball as it took him into the endzone, would have been the play.  Buffalo was moving all day on the Pats D....even IF they went 3 and out, they punt the ball deep into NE territory, and let your D take over making Brady go the length of the  field to score.

Ease up there Monday morning quaterbacks.  He did nothing wrong. He is a kick returner and he is supposed to return kicks.  He was one of the best last year.  I bet if he ran it back for a TD you all would be saying that was the smartest play ever.  He just had some bad luck with the strip.  He shouldn't have fought so hard to get tackled.  That was the problem.  But kick off returners job is to NOT TAKE A KNEE.  They are paid to run out and get some yards.  Funny thing is that Watson's touchdown that was ruled a catch even though the ball touched the ground was the same play from the raiders game that was ruled incomplete.

Chick, your opinion is what it is..

If he didn't run it out, the bills are going 3 and out in the nervous state they were in.  They punt to NE, who starts possibly mid-field.

McKelvin did the correct thing.  The thing he did wrong was extending for extra yards.

Chick, perhaps you should try your hand at coaching professional football?

For what its worth, i've been following the Bills for 31 years.  They did the right thing...

This team falls apart in the end.... trusting Edwards to move the ball with 2 mins left is wrong.    We needed yardage in the form of a good punt return.

You don't think the refs screwed up calling Watson's TD catch a good one, but the very same catch by Murphy in the Raiders game was overturned?  BS inconsistency with the NFL refs the last few years.

And all the hits on the QB penalties?  Man...

The Bills always play the pats very tough.  The pats got screwed big time on the calls for late hits on the qb.  The second call ok, but the Wilfork call was one of the worst I'd ever seen.  Also, Mcelvin did the right thing by running the ball out.  Look at the stats from the game.  The Bills were getting dominated by the pats, and by the second half Brady was scoring at will.  The pats should have scored at least 34 points in that game, but during the first half Brady was pretty rusty out there. Missed fg's, dropped passes, it was pretty bad during the first half, imo.  By the second half Brady was Brady and the O was marching.  Give the Bills some credit, they played a good game.  People act like the teams has no players, look at their offensive threats.  Rosco Perish and TO are damn good players.

Thats ok, it makes up for the horseshit call on Wilfork for a totally legal sack of Edwards.

No, you coulden't be more wrong.  Buffalo was not moving "all day" on the Pats D. They had a handful of big plays that you are focusing on while ignoring the big picture. Infact, the pats had 11 more first down and over 150 more total yards than the Bills. Look at the game stats below for proof.  Infact, it was the other way around.  The problem was, the pats skill position players decided they were going to drop multiple key passes and Gos was going to miss a fg in the first half.  Did you see the pats sack Edwards 3 straight times on the last drive?  Mckelvin did the right thing, he just happened to get strip sacked by Merweather.

Chick is right.  If any of you calling people monday morning quarterbacks knew shitall about football, or had ever actually played (not talking about when you blew out your knee in peewee or you woulda had a scholarship  ::) ) you would know that the right play is to take a knee if you are backpedaling in the endzone when you catch the ball.  And to the genius who said "it's not his job to take a knee" bullshit....sometimes it is, just like a punt returner's job is to sometimes call a fair catch, sometimes the best throw a QB makes is to throw the ball away, etc...

I won't even go into the fumble, as that is a separate issue and even if he hadn't fumbled, the correct play was to field the ball and take a knee.

It's not always his job to not take a knee.....do you really think that?  So if the ball is 8 yds deep into the endzone he is supposed to run it out?  Better tell that to ALL the return men in the league.  And besides that it has more to do with the situation.....hands team, with lead, backpedaling = take a knee.

See if you hear one single football analyst defend him with the argument you guys are trying. I'm actually beginning to wonder if any of you guys actually watch, or have played football, or are just yanking my chain.  It's such a basic thing.

fuck them analysts... so your saying if your in front in a game which you were as good as the Pats, if not better, then you should just put your tail between your legs, take a knee, and then what? your probably gonna say Trent should take 3 kneels too and punt the ball deep in the territory?

your making it sound like you have played football, well so have i ( and i was an all-stater too for that matter). If we're going by your logic, we have 2 scenarios after the guy knees the ball in the end zone:

1) Trent takes 3 knees, pats had 3 Timeouts and then with 1:40 the Bills had to punt the ball, and Brady still could've marched down the field for the game winning TD

2) After the guy took the knee in the end zone, the Bills actually run play, whether they pass the ball or run the ball correct?  Now imagine that Fumble happened on one those plays that the Bills were running after the knee in the end zone.

my point is, the guy wasnt stupid for running out of the end zone, he was dumb for not having 2 hands on the ball and protecting it like a mofo.

The big problem the Bills had WAS THE TURNOVER, not him "deciding to run it out of endzone". Of course now in Hindsight you say he shouldnt have ran it out, but that doesnt mean he was wrong.

The bills are playing what some believe to be the best team in the league.  Up by a few points with 2 minutes left wasn't the place or time to become complacent.  They needed to stay aggressive and run out some time.  The fact the fumbled on the kick off was unfortunate but wasn't a bad call.  He could have ran it to the 20 and edwards could have thrown an INT or they could have ran and fumbled on and on.......

Plus showstoppa, he wasn't eight yards into the end zone.  He caught it right at the line and ran it out.  The bills needed to stay aggressive and they did, just a bad fumble and luck ruined it.

Fuck the commentators.  They are the worse flip floppers in the world.  They would be calling him the best returner in the league if he ran that to the 50 or scored a touchdown.  He fumbles and they all jump on him. BS.

I still think you are wrong.  Much better to take the knee, run the ball 3 times and punt.  Should put the Pats inside their own 30.  With the Pats having no Timeouts, as they would have to burn those when the Bills took a knee or ran the ball, I like those odds for the Bills.

And as for completly dismissing any football experts....I think I will take Steve Young, Jon Gruden, Jon Ritchie, Kordell Stewart, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson, etc's opinion on the subject.  Not trying to be nasty, but I think their NFL experience trumps your "all-state" credentials.

3)Dude did the right thing in returning it.........      The WRONG thing occurred in reaching out for the extra yard while being tackled.
But in returning the ball, he most certainly did the right thing in playing the team they were playing against.

1) Had he knelt down, there would have been far less time on the clock, and/or timeouts on the board for NE to use, and that would be added pressure for NE to drive down the field no matter their field position.
The kick returners job is not only to return kicks. It's his decision to make as to whether it's BENEFICIAL TO THE TEAM AND THE OUTCOME of the game to kneel or to return the ball.

2) So they need extra yardage to make sure NE gets the ball far enough into NE territory so they can't drive back down the field with the time left on the board? OK, then riddle me this:
Why did the returner not just run out of the end zone slower, and PROTECT THE LIVING FUCK OUT OF THE BALL?!?!? Instead, he loses the ball, game, and looks to be the biggest idiot of all time hence this thread!

3) Only point I can agree with you on, somewhat. Do I think he "should have" run the ball out? No. But given that he did so, I think as I said in my (2) point above, he should have protected the ball and made sure that there would be zero chance of him fumbling. He took a few more seconds off the clock by "trying to make a play" as you quoted....but why do you need to make a play when you've almost got the game locked down?! That's a Terrel Owens like move...thinking about your stats and career rather than what is best for the team. Now they have a loss on their hands that could result in them not making the playoffs. Niners vs Cards last year, Cards win...had the Niners won, it could very well have been them in the Bowl. Use that situation for the Bills and this fumble could lead to a very similar scenario.

... They would be calling him the best returner in the league if he ran that to the 50 or scored a touchdown.  He fumbles and they all jump on him. BS.

What are the odds of him returning a kick for a touchdown? Against the team he was playing, how often do they have kicks returned against them and/or how do they rate in special teams play? Things to take into consideration when deciding to return a kick or not. Do they NEED that TD?

Bottom line, IMO, it was not the decision to run the ball out that cost them the game. It was the lack of protecting the ball! That was a bush league move. THAT would have been the right call even if he was protecting it while he knelt down!!!

*groan*

Good teams create their own luck.

As Showstoppa has said, the right play in that situation is to take a knee.

Unfortunately for football, there are a number of stupid coaches out there (witness the Raider play-calling last night), so maybe there's a job for you guys, after all.

Even if you come out and fail to move the ball at all and have to punt, at a minimum, you've at least forced the Patriots to use all their timeouts and a FG won't help them.

It all comes down to game management and the bad teams are the worst at it.  They're the ones who call timeout on 2nd & 5 in the 3rd quarter of a tight game instead of saving those timeouts to get an extra possession late in the game.

He didn't fumble on purpose (as far as we know), but he never should've been in that position in the first place.

Exactly, the possesion before they scored in 50 seconds.  They had long sustained drive all game, capped off by dumb mistakes or dropped passes.  In the second half they were lighting it up.  Mcelvin made the right move, he just happened to be stripped of the ball.

Dude, thats the fucking point right there. THE PROBLEM WAS THE FUMBLE!!!!!!! so your saying its cool to take the knee, and then come out and run 3 plays, but WHAT IF THE FUMBLE OR TURNOVER HAPPENED DURING ONE OF THOSE 3 PLAYS THEY WERE RUNNING?

then i bet you'd be here saying "ummm the QB shouldve just taken 3 knees and leave it to his defense"

again, the problem was THE FUMBLE, NOT THE DECISION!!!!!!!!

Exactly.  If you look at the game stats you see how bad the pats dominated the bills.  People focus on a handful of nice plays the Bills made in the first half and ignore the fact that the pats had 15 more first downs than the Bills and over 150 more yards of total offense.  Time of possesion was largly in the pats favor also.  The pats were dropping passes and missing easy fg's in the first half.  During the second half they looked like the pats and they were scoring at will.  It's easy to say a guy made the wrong move after he is stripped of the ball, but Mckelvin is not dumb for running the ball out.

fuck them analysts... so your saying if your in front in a game which you were as good as the Pats, if not better, then you should just put your tail between your legs, take a knee, and then what? your probably gonna say Trent should take 3 kneels too and punt the ball deep in the territory?

your making it sound like you have played football, well so have i ( and i was an all-stater too for that matter).

Good teams create their own luck.

As one of those hokey Weider training journals I had when I was younger quoted:

"Luck is the residue of design."

I changed that to "Luck is the byproduct of design."

If you design something well enough, you most likely won't have to leave it "up to luck." And the luck that you would have would probably allow the situation to play out in your favor.

Exactly!  Funny how many ex-pro football coaches and players we have on Getbig.  What would these Vince Lombardi's say if the guy ran it back for a touchdown.  Would Chic say he did the exact thing he was supposed to do.

Mcelvin made the right move, he just happened to be stripped of the ball.

Getbig's premier football know it all gets it wrong once again and has probably never played the game lol If he wasn't gonna take a knee there's actually a low chance of being stripped if he and the coaches are on the same page as to how to handle it, which wasn't the case there. I assure you that Belichick ensures that his guys understand this even though you don't know it yet. With that as the emphasis the chance of being stripped is very low actually, for those who have actually played the game.

That mistake was equally the coaches and the player.

Thats besides the point, of course the Pats were lucky to get a fumble in the last 2 minutes, BUT THE FUMBLE DOESNT MAKE THE DECISION TO RUN OUT WITH THE BALL STUPID. thats the whole discussion here. WE ALL AGREE THE FUMBLE WAS A LUCKY GIFT FOR THE PATS, but that fumble couldve happened on a play after the guy took a knee in the end zone.

like i said before, its easy sitting here and saying " the guy ran it out the end zone, the guy then fumbled, therefore what a dumb fucking mistake to run it out" . thats not ture, the Mistake was not holding on to the ball tightly, not running out of the end zone with it.

when that same situation arises again, for any team, the guy will run it out of the end zone.

1:40  left with the pats having 3 time outs, they would end up giving the ball back to a hungry tom brady at the 40 or 50 yard line.  Better to run it out to the 25 and then make them punch it in from their own 20 yard line.  95% of the time, the guy ain't gonna fumble it.

Once again, no. If the Bills had the ball at their 20, they would have ran the ball or took a knee 3 times and then punted.  The Pats would have been forced to use their timeouts to stop the clock after the knee down or runs, so they would have no timeouts left on their final drive.  And after a punt, most likely the Pats would have took over at their own 25-35 yd line with a little over a minute left.

And trust me, there is no way on earth your first statement is true.  Throughout the NFL today special teams coaches were ensuring that their KR would take a knee, like he is f'n supposed to in that situation.

Will you stop repeating this?! It is not relevant. Hell, a lot of this thread is not relevant.

He didn't run the ball back for a touchdown. He did not protect the ball, hence he fumbled and the game was lost.

If he ran it back for a touchdown, the outcome of the game would not have changed...so why he would be applauded for a banal touchdown is not relevant. If it was in the last game of the season propelling them to win and go to the Super Bowl, that's a different story.

The fumble however, changed the outcome of the game!

This isn't funny, but next time, he'll probably stay in the endzone:

McKelvin's front lawn vandalized

HAMBURG, N.Y. -- Bills players are concerned with their privacy and safety after the front lawn of a home belonging to cornerback Leodis McKelvin was vandalized following Buffalo's season-opening loss to New England.

Hamburg police on Tuesday confirmed the home of a Bills player was vandalized, but declined to release details of their investigation after an obscenity and the score of Monday night's game -- a 25-24 loss to the Patriots -- were painted in white on the player's lawn in suburban Buffalo.

McKelvin fumbled a kickoff return with under two minutes to play and the Bills leading 24-19. Three plays later, New England's Tom Brady hit Benjamin Watson for the go-ahead touchdown as the Patriots overcome an 11-point deficit in the final 2:06.

Bills linebacker Kawika Mitchell referred to a teammate's home being vandalized in a post on his Twitter page, though he did not say it was McKelvin's home. Mitchell warned fans that such behavior is disturbing.

"W/ all the safety issues n the NFL its not funny at all," Mitchell wrote. "We have Fam at our homes to protect. If u show ur face on my prop Ill make sure I do everythin to keep my Fam safe."

Mitchell warned that he would consider vandalism threatening behavior if it happened to his home.

"Its my job to protect my home as it is the job of all home owners. Dont push the limit," Mitchell wrote.

Though Bills fans are passionate about their team, Monday's night's vandalism is surprising. Bills players previously have hailed the team's fans for being respectful and allowing players their privacy.

Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold declined comment by saying the team considers this a police matter.

A message left on a phone listed to McKelvin was not returned.

It's not clear if there was anyone at home at the time the vandalism occurred.

Bills players had the day off before returning to practice Wednesday to prepare to host Tampa Bay this weekend.

Bills safety George Wilson was shocked upon learning the news earlier in the day.

"To see that type of response from so-called passionate fans is taking things to the extreme," said Wilson, who is the team's union representative. "You can blog and make your opinions, but to go to a person's residence, you're taking it to a whole new level."

McKelvin, selected in the first round of the 2008 draft out of Troy, set a team record and ranked second in the NFL with 1,468 kickoff return yards last season. He also scored a touchdown.

He opened this season by taking over a starting job opposite veteran cornerback Terrence McGee.

After the game against the Patriots, McKelvin was criticized for running the ball out of the end zone rather than taking a knee. After being hit by Brandon Meriweather at the Bills 30, McKelvin attempted to gain an extra yard before being stripped of the ball by Pierre Woods.

Following the game, McKelvin said he was disappointed that he fumbled but noted he would run the ball out of the end zone again if given the same opportunity.

"Next time I get the opportunity, I am going to hold on and make a better decision," he said.

Coach Dick Jauron defended McKelvin.

"He's a dynamic runner and he was trying to win a football game, ice a football game," Jauron said, adding that McKelvin attempted to protect the ball with two hands. "It's just one of those things that happens, but I don't have any problems with Leodis. He plays the game hard."

With a nod to Terrell Owens, defensive end Aaron Schobel was upbeat a day after yet another Monday night meltdown by the Bills.

"I think Terrell said it best before and after the game," Schobel said. "He said he's been on a lot of teams and said we've got talent. We've just got to put it together. I think he's right."

Schobel did express concern that the Bills continue to struggle to seal victories. They lost 29-27 to Cleveland on a Monday night last season on Phil Dawson's 56-yard field goal with 1:39 left. Two years ago on a Monday night, Buffalo gave up 9 points in the final 20 seconds in a 25-24 loss to Dallas.

"The bottom line is when you have a chance to win the game, win the game. We didn't do that," he said. "It's a long season and we're going to be all right. We've just got to get on a roll."

Are you that fucking dumb? what if the fumble happened during a play "when the O took over" ? then what you have said?

But the fumble DID NOT happen when the offense took over, because the guy ran the ball out WITHOUT protecting the ball, and fumbled. It never got to the point where the "if's, and's or but's" could happen.

Go into a courtroom and argue with a judge or prosecutor as you are now, and let's see how far you get.

Great, now if people don't agree with "mr. all-state" we are idiots.  Funny that the people who actually know football, to include EVERY analyst on TV agrees with us, to include NFL coaches and players, yet you and 240 know best.....I guess you should apply for some NFL coaching jobs.

Every analyst on tv... AND coaches?   Hmm...  wonder why Bobby April choose to run him out?   I guess the coach of the number 1 ranked special teams unit doesn't know a thing about football.

You do know that Buffalo has the best special teams unit in the NFL, right?  I would pretty mucn take their coaches decisions as the right thing to do....MORE SO than monday morning "analysts" etc etc...      he knows his team and unit..  HE MADE THE RIGHT CALL.  END of story.

How do you know he "chose to run him out?"  I suppose April said so.....right and a coach would never protect one of their players after making a dumb mistake by saying such a thing.  Just like Jauron had to defend him.

And even IF Buffalo had the best speacial teams in the NFL, which is highly debatable as leading the league in return yardage is only one aspect of special teams, the normal special teams unit wasn't even on the field.  It was the hands team, which means no return was set-up which means he shouldn't have returned the football.  Now that is END OF STORY.

The Bills DO indeed have the best special teams unit in the NFL.  Thats a known fact.  They even talked about it during the game.  There is no "if" about it.

And I know April was behind his running it out bc he has stated so...  it was mentioned during mckelvin's post game interview.

"League-leading 15.5 yards per punt return"

I repeat, of course April like any good coach, is going to deflect criticsm from a good player who made a mistake by saying it was "his call."

Put it this way, if one of the hands team guys had fielded the kick, should he have just fell on the ball, or as you guys say, take off running "and make a play to ice the game?"  Answer that honestly and you will see the light.

Some of you guys are issing the point, entirely...had he not been 3 yards deep going backwards to catch the ball in the EZ, then fine...but he was.

Even on routine kickoffs, this is considered "taking a knee" situation, let alone preserving the win.....

As I said, there was NO advantage to running it out....

This is my final response to this dude.

McKelvin was told to return the ball by the best special teams coach in the NFL for this reason:  If he downs it, the Bills were most likely to go 3 and out.  They punt.  The Pats return it X number of yards.  Brady steps in and finishes the game.

They needed yardage period.  The mistake was made in reaching out with the ball, trying to get that extra yard.  It was correct to return the ball.  How can you debate that with the best, if not one of the best speical teams coaches out there?  Your ignoance is amazing.  Regardless, you're entitled to your opinion.

We've just got to get on a roll."

everything Mitchell said did not need to be said in public(twitter or whatever)...Talk about stoking a mini-fire...Although I agree with what he said, it just didn't need to be said...I wonder how bad his house is going to get egg'd come Halloween...Lets hope tuff guy Mitchell doesn't shoot someone who decides to toilet paper is BMW...

Just saw the guys lawn on Jim Rome is burning...What a joke...You can't even really read it and Rome is making it look like they set the guys house on fire...Where is Jim Rome when fans and players are being poisoned(food) in Green Bay...

The chance of fumbling when you DONT run the ball out of the endzone...is ZERO....Einstein

Every other hypothetical, is irrelevant.

You just made my point...

Dude your contradicting yourself. So going by your logic THE PLAYERS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD PUT THEMSELVES IN A SITUATION WHERE THERE IS A POSSIBILITY TO TURNOVER THE BALL... is that correct? but then you go ahead and say ( a quote from your previous post) "You take a knee, and let your O take over to make a few first downs, there was no reason for any special team heroics...they were ahead"... so going by your logic the Bills should have taken 3 knees ( therefore the possibility of them turning it over is virtually ZERO), and then punt it to the pats??

What if he had....oh wait...

Then they could have....oh yeah I forgot...

The Pats could have done....shit....

If so and so hadn't made this call....

Instead of asking the above, or going on and attempting to forecast the future (only Alex23 can do that), try to deal with the scenario of WHAT ACTUALLY PLAYED OUT!!!!

I thought Cotrane was the biggest fool on this thread, but I weas wrong...you are by a mile.

First, the two quotes from me you used say the EXACT SAME THING...there is no contradiction...you're the one coming up with these wild senarios and going to extremes to try and make a point...TIME was the factor, and the Bills needed to get first downs, or at least move the ball downfield enough to put the Pats back deep in their own side if they did have to punt....so, your senario is completely RETARDED....

You down the ball in the EZ, so as to avoid EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED...moron

Jim Rome said some idiot Bills fans broke on to players home property and vandized his lawn after the fumbled kick off and subsequent loss to the Pats

Can't speak for him
but
he did compete in bb as a teen from 14 or 15 and up....so unlikely he also played football during this time

I could be wrong, though

And you are....played from Youth leaue at 9 yeras old to the State Championship game in HS (which we won)...

But playing ball doesnt make one wise to they smartest play, as evidenced by the "experts" in this thread...

Coltrane likes to throw shit around, but cant refute anything I've brought up...

This whole debate comes down to one thing...you dont return out of the endone in this situaton because IF you fumble the ball, you may end up losing the game .....and that possibility is increased when you have a defense coming down the field at full speed with the INTENT of causing a fumble...

If he was on the 1 yard line, then he just gets shit for fumbling the ball, but had no choice but to return it.

Being IN the EZ, he had the choice...

You're so wrong. 3 and out still ends up in you punting from the 25 or so with much less time on the clock. That's worst case scenario other than a fumble or INT. If he took the knee, went 3 and out the pats would have gotten it back around their own 30, not the Bills 30.
