They did.

Dorian was really smart in his '92 prep. With Haney gone, he knew he'd be the biggest top guy, so he admittedly overdieted and lost muscle to not only outsize everyone, but also to easily match or surpass their "conditioning." Mission accomplished.

Levrone seemed to employ a similar strategy. He was much fuller at the Jr. and regular Nationals in '91. I actually think he might've given Doz a hard time if he'd repeated that form in Helsinki, but he elected to get stupid shredded instead. As a result, he lost way too much thickness, especially from the upper back.

Yes, as with Darren Charles, these guys who have balanced physiques, attempt to extend shelf life by moving to Classic Physique. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t. Here he is in locker room a few years back:
