Why become a pro?

I read in a recent MD article some kid asking "the real deal" if he should not go to law school so he could concentrate on becoming a pro BB.  Why would anyone wanna turn down a six figure job for a carear in BB where the ave salary is about 30 grand (?), but you must spend thousands on drugs and food?  Ave pro BB probably only makes a few grand a year, net.  Plus through in all the legal problems, health problems, etc...just does not add up, however, glad some people do it though.
