Title: Anyone have a root canal?
Post by: Danimal77 on March 08, 2014, 09:26:46 PM
I'm sitting here freaking out. I had sensitivity to hot and cold on 1 tooth (upper right molar). My dentist sent me to a specialist who said I needed a root canal. Had it done on Thursday. When the freezing wore off I had a pain in my tooth that wasn't there before. The sensitivity to hot and cold is gone, but now, I cannot touch that tooth with my tongue, finger, or bite down/chew on it without having a shooting pain (sort of like an numbing electrical shock). Is this normal?

Also, when I called the receptionist (a rude young girl) on Friday asking if I could see the doctor next week. She said he's fully booked and only has an opening in a week and a half. This is ridiculous.

i had my root canal, and no pain after at all...you have to remember they dig out the nerve
maybe the dentist left some nerve still there...i did my root canal and it just left a big hole
with the tooth surrounding it, no pain at all...went back to my dentist and they fill it with
that silver stuff and put a temporary cap on....go back i have a feeling some nerve is exposed

It cost me $1650. The stupid receptionist was a bitch when I called on Friday. She said he is busy all next week with patients. I might just show up at the office. Even his assistant was rude. He was supposed to have done it in 2 appointments, but he did it all in 1 appointment. Feels rushed and now I have a massive pain in my tooth where there wasn't one before. My tooth never hurt before. It was just sensitive to hot and cold. Now the fucker is actually hurting. How fucked up is this?

I had one and don't remember that much pain at all. Maybe he did a shitty job. Try calling again and explaining your situation to the retard dental receptionist or go to another dentist to fix what this guy did.

Oh, I'm going to make sure he looks at me, before I dish out another grand. I'm thinking of just showing up at his office on Monday without an appointment, demanding to be seen.

Yeah. It's a follow up for a recent procedure, not like it's some new problem. Tell them it's an emergency and you need to be seen ASAP.

demand it be fixed for free. he didnt finish the job. you should feel nothing. the nerves are pulled out (supposed to have been).

nerves removed means there is nothing to feel (or should be).

ive had one. as soon as the nerves are gone thats it

The odd thing is I had no tooth pain prior to the root canal. It was just extremely sensitive to hot and cold. Now post-root canal (since last Thursday), hot and cold no longer bother me, but I can't touch the tooth at all without experiencing shooting pain like a shock. I don't get it?

Your tooth has 4 surfaces and that's how they charge. I'm sure your dentist has been telling you for a while now that you have a cavity, but you didn't believe him because you couldn't feel it. If you would of filled this cavity when it was only one surface it would of been prob a 100 bucks. Since you waited they need to drill out all 4  surfaces plus the root(cause cavity grew)which is a bitch pain and $$ wise. Next time ur dentist tells you you have a cavity fill it pay the 100 bucks and be done with it it takes 15 min. Waiting longer costs more and is much more pain. Also takes a lot longer. You learned this lesson the hard way. You waiting was the problem not the dentist. Live and learn hope u got good meds and heal fast. Not trying to be a dick if that's how this came off, typing fast and trying to save u or someone else the trouble next time. Cheers

Maybe if the pain is too bothersome ask your dentist or you primary care doc for a script of pain pills.

A lot of assumptions on your part. First of all, I went into my dentist 2.5 weeks ago because it just started getting sensitive to hot and cold. He immediately took an x-ray, said I had a cavity (a hole) in the upper right molar. He filled it on the spot. For the next week, it was more sensitive than it was before the filling and so I went back to him. He told me he thinks I will need a root canal and gave me a referral to an oncologist, who said I need a root canal. He did it 3 days later (last Thursday). Since the freezing wore off, the sensitivity to hot and cold is gone, but as I mentioned, now I cannot touch my tooth without shooting pain and that was NOT there before the root canal.

A root canal doesn't happen over night. Your right I'm assuming you've been going to the dentist at least once a year for X-rays which would of shown this cavity prob years before it was bad enough for a root canal...

A good dentist will often pack a tooth post root canal with antiseptic gauze, put a temp filling on it, and then make you come back a week or so later for the permanent job.  The pain will most likely be because of bacterial infection.  Often it subsides but it isn't what you want and is one reason why many functional medicine specialists are against root canals as a treatment.

Unfortunately both my dentist and GP don't work on weekends. Too bad it's not 1964 where doctors used to make house calls. Can't believe my dentist sent me to this guy. It was a referral, because my dentist doesn't do root canals on the molar teeth. Apparently they are more complicated than other teeth and I'm starting to see why now.

My dentist did not perform the root canal. He referred me to an oncologist who specializes in them. It's an upper molar and my dentist did not feel comfortable working on it. I really didn't want the root canal, but the oncologist said I need one. He did the whole job inside of an hour and sent me home (last Thursday). Since then the sensitivity to hot and cold is gone, but the pain in my tooth (on touch) is numbing. You sound like you know what you're talking about, so what can be done now?

Root canals nowadays are ad painful ad brushing your teeth

What hurts is the bill if u dont have great dental insurance, last time I had one I had to pay $450 out of pocket

Dude, what's your problem? I go to the dentist every 6 months. All your doing is attacking me and being a complete dick.

You're right.  Kicking a man when he's got a toothache is pretty uncalled for, lol.

Anyway, a couple of questions:
- How far back is this upper molar?
If it's the very back one, you can just have it pulled without much problem.

- Didn't the guy who did the root canal prescribe you an anti-biotic?
My guy did this after a root canal I had done on a Saturday in December just in case he'd accidentally left any germs or other crud in my nerve canal that might cause a painful infection that I wouldn't be able to have him do anything about because his office is closed on Sunday.

- Did they just fill the tooth without putting a crown on it yet?
I didn't get my crown when I had my root canal done because with my insurance it made more sense financially to wait until after the first of the year (to get the crown).  I still haven't gotten the crown (because I'm moving cross-country soon and need to pinch pennies) but have noticed that the affected tooth (upper tooth 3rd from rear - a pre-molar?) is a tiny bit "loose" and gives off a slight electric shock-like pain when I try to move it with my tongue.  I think I need to get the damn crown ASAP.

BTW, I would go to the office and raise a little bit of hell.  They already cost you unnecessary money by having you fill a cavity and getting you to have a root canal on the same tooth shortly thereafter.  Unless you've been chewing ice or something like that with your recently worked on tooth, you should not be having serious pain.  Make 'em fix that shit or at least give you some anti-biotics.

He didn't prescribe me antibiotics.

He temporarily filled my tooth. No crown. I believe my dentist will be the one to permanently fill the tooth and put on the crown.

I will be raising hell this week.

In your estimation, if sensitivity to hot and cold is gone, but has been replaced with pain when the tooth is touched, is that a nerve related thing, or an infection/crack in the tooth/root? I do know that there was absolutely NO pain in my tooth (other than it being sensitive to hot and cold) prior to the root canal on Thursday.

No root canals thank god but I had my first dental cleaning in a couple of years. I take really good care of my teeth(or so I thought) and I got tired of paying the bullshit co-pays that my dental insurance wouldn't cover. So I decided to avoid the dentist for a couple of years. Big fucking mistake.

Bit the bullet to go in for a cleaning last week and the dentist took x-rays which showed a nice buildup of tarter below the gum line on one side of my jaw. This dentist dug and scraped into me like he was mining for coal. Mouth was a bloody mess and hurt like hell once the novacain wore off.

Last time I pull that shit again. Every 6 months from now on. Dentists are the biggest bullshit artists but unfortunately, necessary. If you don't have good in-network insurance you can wind up really paying out the ass.

I think most dentistry is just a cash grab. There should be no problems if you brush your teeth regularly.

I have had multiple friends get "wisdom teeth" removed. It's all about pain tolerance. I have had pain in my mouth before. I don't go running to the dentist. Most dentists will try to milk you for whatever procedure they see fit.

(Knock on wood) I have not seen a dentist in 18-20 years. My teeth are fine.

That's absolutely revolting. I bet if you had x-rays done on your teeth, there would be plaque and tarter the size of rocks below your gum line.

Your breath must smell like absolute dog shit from halitosis. You must be a big hit with the ladies too coupled with that physique of yours.

Tell them you just want the tooth pulled, then.  (I remember reading somewhere that models sometimes have their very back teeth, and not just wisdom teeth, on the top and bottom pulled so their faces look better.)

They won't like this (because it costs so little, mostly) but it might motivate them to offer you better rates on the crown they still want you to get.

Dentists are like auto mechanics. They tell you you NEED to have this, this, and the other in an attempt to get money when often a simple procedure would be a more appropriate choice. They get away with it because we don't know any better and moreover trust that they are more ethical than a mechanic , however that's rarely the case.

You can brush your teeth until the cows come home. But routine cleanings are a must. You can't see what's happening below the gum line. The tarter and plaque buildup will weaken the root and eventually loosen the teeth.

But hey....be in denial....but don't say you wern't warned when you take a bite out of an apple in a few years and a tooth pops loose. You probably have leftover birthday cake from age 12 sitting in there.

18-20 years....utterly disgusting dude....get a clue.

The minute I went to the dentist it all started going wrong for me in terms of infections, pain, sensitivity and needing more work to correct complications from the last lot of work.

If I had my time over I'd just brush, floss and see the hygienist once a year.... No more.

It's probably inevitable that I'll need a root canal eventually. Is the operation painless like they used the same type of anesthesia they would when removing wisdom teeth?

what sort of dim dentist sends you to a specialist for root canal treatment?
Its a straightforward treatment with more financial than physical pain

I think it's common. I had an abscess on root canal I head 15 years ago and my dentist sent me to see a specialist for it.

Most due.

You get sent to an Endodontist.

Root Canals are basically all they do. Id rather have a specialist do it than some jerkoff and have to make return trips.

If you need to be convinced that getting a dental checkup is necessary, especially after 18-20 years(excuse me while I throw up in my fucking mouth) then i don't know what to tell you.

If you have dental insurance and you're covered, then why not go anyway? Who are you to determine when you need to actually go? When you start feeling pain?? Jesus, you're ignorant.

Forget it, man. Do what you want. Arguing with you is like arguing with a nutless monkey.

Just because your teeth aern't yellow, or that you don't have cavities, or your wisdom teeth don't need to be removed(mine aern't and my teeth are very straight) doesn't mean your teeth are in good shape. It's all about what's going on below the gum line(which you CAN'T SEE).

Stop debating like a gimp and use some common sense.

Ok I admit I used to go every 6 months but only went once in the last 3 years and haven't been in maybe a year and a half. I know I need to go, but need a new dentist. The physician lady who cleaned my teeth at the last place would always yell at me and tell me how I'm not brushing/flossing etc. even though i am. Your post about plaque and shit scared me.

No it's not. Get a proper dentist.

I had one done and the only time I felt a tiny twinge of pain was during the removal of the nerve when the anesthetic hadn't taken hold yet. It was my fault as I wanted to rush her.

Word of advice. Go to the most expensive dentist you can find. Never fuck around with your dentistry or health. Cutting corners just isn't worth it.

My UK dentist (I've moved to NZ since) offered daily follow up calls to check on my healing and progress and I could get an appointment within hours if needed. Day or night. And I've had the guy up at 5:30am on a Sunday morning with tooth ache.

Readers Digest about 15-20 years ago sent a guy to a Dental college to be examined. They told the magazine that he had one tooth that in on the border of needing work. With that they sent him to dentists across the country. From 5th ave Manhattan dentist and small town dentists they all had different diagnoses. Some said 8 teeth had to be worked on. Some said teeth on one side while others said the other side. In other words they were ripping people off trying to sell unneeded work.

When they bought this up to some dental association instead of saying there are a lot of scum bag crooks they said they were expressing their somewhat subjective opinion based on individual experience.

This leads me to root canals. 25-30 years ago I never heard of anyone getting one. They would just fill cavities. No one that I know of had any problem with that. Now I can't find anyone who goes to the dentist with tooth pain not getting a root canal. Filling cavities the dentist gets chump change. A root canal every half hour buys him a luxury car and big money to buy that amazing house. So do a filling for $250 or do a root canal for $1500 plus?

No, you're wrong I'm afraid. 25-30 years ago they used to pull that teeth. You only get a root canal if the tooth is beyond general fillings or repair work. You can either opt for a root canal or to pull the tooth.

I opt for a root canal in order to keep the tooth. And btw, my dentist offered to pull it out. Wasn't even going to charge me for that.

I went for the root canal

I think most dentistry is just a cash grab. There should be no problems if you brush your teeth regularly.

I have had multiple friends get "wisdom teeth" removed. It's all about pain tolerance. I have had pain in my mouth before. I don't go running to the dentist. Most dentists will try to milk you for whatever procedure they see fit.

(Knock on wood) I have not seen a dentist in 18-20 years. My teeth are fine.

* Note: This statement does not apply to UK getbiggers. You guys have evolved shitty grills from birth.

If you have a compacted wisdom tooth and need it pulled, get them all pulled, thank me later. I know a lot of people that needed another one pulled, why go thru the recovery twice? One of them was my buddy's pregnant wife had to wait 6 months in pain cause she couldnt take meds till after the baby was born

No,you're wrong. Almost any tooth can be saved unless you let it rot like someone from England. Very few teeth are pulled unless you live outside the US. Teeth they use to drill out and fill are getting root canals. Anyone who is 50 and older will back me up in how they never heard of anyone getting root canals of any age a short 25-30 years ago.

I usually wait until the end of the car wash cycle, and poke my head out the sunroof to catch the big roller brush
