wtf is wrong with you guys.

tom said he would retire and easily maintain a lean 250 naturally.

so there he is, 250lbs lean...

it's just that jay and bob are each over 450lbs that makes tom look on the small side.

I'm not hating, just really curious.  For a guy that made his living by working out (and if he is a "guru" now), it seems a stretch that he "doesn't give a shit about actually working out anymore".

In your opinion, what does Tom Prince weigh today?

To all the smart guys here making retarded comments:

Tom has been on dialisys for the last few years now....he can't train much (as it makes it worse for his health)...can't take in much protein (ditto)...and is focusing on their business and staying healthy...

He's always been ghostly white...nothing different there....isn't wearing a "affliction" shirt...it's a new "Max Muscle" shirt Dave had him throw on for a pic.

He doesn't care about being big anymore, doesn't come on the boards, and isn't going to see any of the ignorant comments being made by some of you....

And if anyone else thinks they'll be "looking large" sandwiched between me and Jay....by all means...come on down to MM next time Jay's in town and we'll be sure to post your pic right here on Getbig....

BTW...while you're there....BUY SOMETHING!!

One more thing...anymore degrading comments on Jay's wife, and I'll not only delete your post, but your entire account as well....maybe some of you vets of the board can explain to the rookies/ noobs...why that is.

Tom does care, or he wouldn't have made such a big deal about it when he supposedly weighed 230.

Tom does care, or he wouldn't be wering multiple and long sleeve shirts in these pics when it's 75 degrees out.

I have to say that it's really sad that most people today only find pleasure in putting other people down, I know it's not just here on this board but it still applies.  I took a pic of Tom because I had not seen him for a while and I was glad he showed up while Jay and Bob hapenned to be in the shop already.  If i was him and I knew what you guys were saying, I'd say no next time.  BTW Bob called it as he said that the Peanut Gallery would talk smack about TP's weight, boy does he know you guys.  LOL!!

No...it's guys like YOU that cared...as you continue to bring it up. Tom said from day one that he would maintain what he could and hope to slim down as time progressed as it'snot healthy for him to weigh that much and carry that muscle....

You're obsessed, not him.

He also wasn't wearing "multiple layers"...he had ONE shirt on he wore to workout. DAVE asked him to put on one of the new shirts to take a pic...he put it on over the one he had on......

Don't you feel dumber than you already are, now?

Cutler is living the good life.  I am quite confident he'll win next year, but then I hope he retires and goes out on top.  It was sad seeing Ronnie decline like that.  Cutler is no Coleman in terms of longterm greatness and impact on the sport, and seeing another Mr O slide down would  suck.

Max, when TP was here, he used to be one of the most cruel people you'd ever see.  Ask him about those days.

I remember many many MANY posts about TP bragging how he could maintain 240-50lbs and have to TRY to lose muscle to maintain his health.

I don't know what Tom said in the past as I used to not come here that often.  What I do know is that there is a lot of negative comments on this board but when called on it, people just say they are just goofing off and peeps should be able to take it.  I don't know, seems like a pattern to me.

In Prince's particular case we're not "just goofing off", Max, we really don't like the guy.

Cutler must be thankful that he can have sex with his wife's nostrils.

you're a fine one to talk about nostrils.

if your nose was upside down it would make twin toilet seats.

mrs Cutler is a fine woman and a good wife to jay.

good to see a loving quality relationship in a sport that isn't conducive to this end.

I remember many many MANY posts about TP bragging how he could maintain 240-50lbs and have to TRY to lose muscle to maintain his health.
Tom said he thought it would be IMPOSSIBLE for him to get below 230lbs even if he stopped training completely and only ate 100 grams of protein per day. This was because he weighed that much as a natural.

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dialysis
Many have played a role in developing dialysis as a practical treatment for renal failure, starting with Thomas Graham of Glasgow, who first presented the principles of solute transport across a semipermeable membrane in 1854.[2] The artificial kidney was first developed by Abel, Rountree and Turner in 1913,[3] the first Peritoneal Dialysis was by Georg Ganter (1923),[4]the first hemodialysis in a human being was by Hass (February 28, 1924)[5] and the artificial kidney was developed into a clinically useful apparatus by Kolff in 1943 - 1945.[6] This research showed that life could be prolonged in patients dying of renal failure. Yet, the technical problems associated with blood access or access to the peritoneum made dialysis limited to patients with acute renal failure until 1960 (though a chronic renal failure patient was treated in 1956 with peritoneal dialysis[7]). In 1960 work on subcutaneous arteriovenous shunt (a plastic tube connected to an artery and a vein) by Scribner and Quinton made hemodialysis available as a treatment for people with chronic renal failure.[8].

Seems to me the first dialysis machine was invented betwen 1943-45.  Your uncle must be OLD.

Here's the quote...  just goes to show you how delusional he was/is:

Quote from: Tom Prince
TLEILAXUTANK:  Don't kid myself?   OK..  let's just go with the facts.

1.  I was 225 at the beginning of my senior year in HIGH SCHOOL.

2.  I was 242 after one year of training, and I was NATURAL.

3.  In June of 1998, after 6 months of not touching a weight (I had shoulder surgery that year), or eating more than 3 meals a day, I moved to Santa Monica, California, weighing 255 pounds.

So, MY evidence that getting down to 235 for me will be difficult, is based on past experienece, and what I know about myself.

I could almost guarantee, that even eating 100 grams of protein a day, it would take me 10 years to drop below 250 if I keep weight training.  No QUESTION about it.  The last time I weighed below 250 in the off-season..  I was 22 years old.

The ONLY way I could do it, is to stop doing EVERYTHING. No training, little food, and natural (of course).   Sorry, that's not going to happen.

I'm thinking 235-240 at around 6% bodyfat.

It's going to be difficult to get DOWN to 235.  I'm not sure if I can do it, and keep lifting weights at the same time.  I may have to quit doing everything but cardio to get to that.  Even being 100% clean, if I weight train 3 days a week, doing 3-4 sets per bodypart, I'm worried that I won't be able to drop below 255-260.

Should be a fun challange.

nononono enough of this crap.

1) prince was never ever NEVER over 200lb naturally and i mean NEVER. you need to get it in your head once and for all.

2) prince was on hormones when he touched the number 220 anything. yes he was on hormones since highschool.

3) prince never had amazing genetics. he was short and still is and did have the ability to blow up real well on hormones. but that is it! his muscle was bulk. you see tons of those guys in your local gym with red swollen face, pale as the wall, and average physiqe. what he did have is the ABILITY not to be stuck at the 230lb mark and actually go up to the 250lb mark due to a marvelous response to hormones. that is also what gave him his pro card like many of us. but all of this was made with a lot A HELL OF A LOT of goodies.

4) after 6 months of eating 2-3 meals a day and not touching weight prince would be (even with the hormones) close to his natural limit which is 200lb

5) ofcourse the 200lb limit is now 180lb limit and with the years will be reduced to 170 and then 160 and will stop somewhere there considering his height 5'7" and a half.

1) prince is a space alien from the planet Geldor.

2) prince was on hormones when he touched the number 220 anything. yes he was on hormones since highschool.  He also never brushed his teeth, which is a good think because animals never brush their teeth either. It was a space alien 10,000 years ago who taught us how to brush our teeth.

3) prince never had amazing genetics. he was short and still is and did have the ability to blow up real well on hormones. but that is it! As an aside, it was the space aliens using human slave laborwho built the pyramids!

4) after 6 months of eating 2-3 meals a day and not touching weight prince would be (even with the hormones) close to his natural limit which is 200lb, and if any of you knew about the government conspiracy to hide the aliens from you, you'd kill yourselves.

5) ofcourse I'm a complete fruitcake and ifbb pro, but I have inside information to all this due to my part-time job as a janitor at Area 51!

I don't know...we didn't weigh him when he walked in.

When he was 220, I told you he was 220...now he's lighter.

Tom doesn't care what he weighs...WHY DO YOU??

you cared when you were willing to wager $10k on his weight.

Suddenly now that he's 155 soaking wet, you don't care.

Face it, if he was 233 today, you'd be shouting it from the rooftops like you used to.

Tom's an everyday schlep now.

One more thing...anymore degrading comments on Jay's wife, and I'll not only delete your post, but your entire account as well....maybe some of you vets of the board can explain to the rookies/ noobs...why that is.

Quit acting like you're Mr. Big-shot, Bob...you can't delete accounts, so quit pretending you can.   This is reminiscent of your "I can see all your credit card info on bb.com" comment that got shot down real quick by DeLuca.

You are absolutely correct that Ron doesn't like people going after families, and HE very well might delete somebody's account for it, but YOU can't do shit.

Hope this helps.  ::)

He did have to "try" and lose the muscle....it's called "not training". He attempted to maintain a 3-4 day regimine at first...then was advised that the amount of muscle he was maintaining was having a negative effect on his treatments....

The people acting like assholes that he responded to in-kind...reaped what they sowed.

Ok then...  ;D ;D ;D

I wouldn't make fun of that. To me it looks like he was right. "The ONLY way I could do it, is to stop doing EVERYTHING. No training, little food, and natural (of course)." Just what he did. I would recommend others to follow but to add in some cardio (as much as you want) and maybe some light weight exercising but that is not needed.

First off, I disagree that negative comments towards Kerry's appearance should be deleted from here.  Her pictures have been posted and naturally people will make comments.  Insulting her personally is another matter.  My opinion is that she is very pretty, not to mention they were high school sweethearts.  Contrast that with Dennis Newman's wife, who dumped him as soon as he came down with leukemia.

I agree and that's the point I was trying to make.  She is not so pre-occupied with self.  Just seems like Jay and his wife treat it like a business and don't appear to get caught up in the self centered and self love fest that can be bodybuilding.

Tom Prince looks like grim death in those pics. I was shocked looking at them to be honest and had to look twice to make sure it was him. Anyways I hope is is genuinely ok and is happy doing whatever he is doing at present.

Quick question though Don Long is also a dyalasis user too yet he has maintained a  pretty good physique so how come his muscle hes carrying around is not detrimental to his health (or is it) as reading through these posts it would seem that Tom has been advised otherwise.

OK, here's what I love about threads like this.  First of all, Musclecenter's trying to be decent in his presentation...  "Mr. & Mrs. Cutler in Thanksgiving Day."  Ah...how sweet.  Oh look, there's Jay, there's Kerry, Jay looks happy, Kerry looks great, sweet girl, standing by her man, aw, they're dancing...ah,  yeah, the whole gang's there at Dave's store.  Day after Thanksgiving, everyone's clowning around, wow, bodybuilding really is getting back some of it's comraderie, yeah, cool...continue to scroll down....

WHOA!  WTF!  LOOK AT TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!  OMG!  ajhdgf;askdhg;asjdgh;asjfdgh;asljfgh;agh;aslfjgha;sljghasfljgkhas;fljgha;lfdjghas;dljghas;fdljghas;kfdljghas;lfdjghasfljghas;fdgjhas;lfgjhas;lgjhas;ljghas;fljhas;fdljhasfd;gljhas;fgljhasfd;gjhasf;gjhasf;gjahfdg;gh;

Oh so HERE'S the point of the thread!

Multiple pictures.  Dave even takes some pictures after he has Tom make a wardrobe change, just to make sure we know how bad this is, just to make sure we know it wasn't the "shirt/shirts."  LOL  There's even one posted of Tom from the back/side, talking to the guys...no other relevance whatsoever, just "Tom from the side, he's haggard looking from any angle."  Then Dave's like, "ha ha you guys never fail to disappoint, me and Bob "predicted" that the peanut gallery would have their say."  ROFL  Talk about epic foresight!   ;D

But you do have to wonder why Tom would even agree to have his pics taken...yes, I'm sure he won't look at this thread.  He's beyond gone; he knows he fucked up...but note that there are subtle subconscious forces in him that need to give us what he owes us...verification that he was no better than anyone else and was WRONG in many of his arrogant assumptions, as he must now KNOW he was.

"Tom knows," guys.  Just leave it be.

Well how else was he gonna spin it?  Thanks for the pics, Dave.  Somebody had to do it.  The last time I saw Tom he looked a good 20-30 pounds heavier than that, doing sets of Hammer Strength deadlifts with 4 & 5 plates on each side...this was I'd say 6 months ago.  I even told Matt C that I thought Tom was "getting braver with his dosages again."  I'm guessing he started to push it and they told him it was fucking him up so he had to cut damn near everything back out completely again.  He was actually looking pretty thick if you looked at him from the right angle; once you've been that big it doesn't take anything to balloon back up, and even when you're deflated your muscle has a sort of real dense look that pictures really don't do justice.  He probably was 230 when Bob and Tom said he was; but he was probably still on his way down at that point it seems.

Not sure why you are so shocked with the board's response to these pictures.

I feel bad for Tom. But with the way he used to talk to people I am not surprised with the backlash. I hope he stays healthy for his child and his wife.

It's loyalty to a friend on Bob's part; I can certainly overlook that.  Tom originally helped Bob solidify his placing in the industry out here; together they established themselves as the industry's preeminent "scenesters;" they "ran shit" in Venice for a little while as a result; Tom then fell off and Bob stayed on and kept moving forward, so of course Bob's gonna have Tom's back for good.  I think it's actually pretty cool; but with everything else, there's always limits as to what's conducive to maintaining your integrity; so Bob, don't let the trolls get the best of you.  At any rate, Bob has a strangle hold on the top of the game out here; he's played his cards very well.  Props to you, Bob, I told you a long time ago I dug what I knew you were doing.

To the rest of the fools...Tom allows his pic to be taken because he really doesn't give a shit what anyone thinks....he's as healthy as he can be, has a great business, makes good money, and doesn't read the boards anyway...

True.

I feel bad for the guy more then anything else. Thats said I can see why some people are unsympathetic at this point. We all know how fragile some pro bb's are. Considering how large Tom was before , it must be very hard for him to accept his current situation.

Compounded by the the fact he is surrounded by people who are in there bb prime.

I think Tom burned a lot of bridges with the attitude he had before. If anything Tom is a prime example of how unhealthy bb can be these days.

Shame really.

haha, McFarland called it perfectly.

You know how much material I steal from this guy when helping others with their life problems?  Sometimes I will steal full PMs from him only changing a few words, LOL.  I'm not sure if it's IQ directly at work here or just good perception/observation skills (sort of "EQ", or emotional intelligence).

Don't you love how Dave will take pictures of Kerry at her worst or from an unfavourable angle just to milk the board for comments like "Jay can do better than that" and the like.  Dave loves it.  ;D

And what the fuck is this?  ;D ;D

WHOA!  WTF!  LOOK AT TOM!!!!!!!!!!!!  OMG!   ajhdgf;askdhg;asjdgh;asjfdgh;asljfgh;agh;aslfjgha;sljghasfljgkhas;fljgha;lfdjghas;dljghas;fdljghas;kfdljghas;lfdjghasfljghas;fdgjhas;lfgjhas;lgjhas;ljghas;fljhas;fdljhasfd;gljhas;fgljhasfd;gjhasf;gjhasf;gjahfdg;gh;

No I'm just kidding, I don't think I was the first one to say it...all I know is that when I saw him walking around the gym at 310, that he was the most massive human I'd ever seen; he really did look like The Thing, or maybe Robocop.  He was that fucking big; just stacked out as fuck.

I thought EXACTLY the same thing!!
I guess Tom got angry and fed up with bodybuilding because of the illness it brought upon him. Long looks 1000 light-years better than Tom.

Prince looks pathetic, what a shame! This sends a clear message for the upandcomers in the scene: don't go his route.

I think if was worth all the training, all the food, all the drugs if the end result is that poor, pitty-inducing, fragile and stupid image we can see at those pics of him. To make matters worse, it sems he intentionally wants to look like the weirdo we lay our eyes on those photos. Why not wear some normal-looking clothes? Get a soft tan, bite some food, ya know......try to look somewhat healthy. Geez.....he looks like a poor, unfertile and impotent man, whose dick can get up and the wife cheats on him. :-[

And to think I was a big fan of his as an athlete. What a disgrace. Looking at Prince nowadays makes me question my love for this sport and to put under scrutiny my whole bodybuilding lifestyle. I don't want that to myself. Tom should do community services, going to schools and doing lectures on students about what steroids advil can do to a person.

Wow...and you had seen a lot of pros at that point?

The images I have of a couple of my friends from late high school / early university still stand out as being the images of the biggest human beings I've ever seen.  I was more impressed with them at the time then I was seeing lots of pros at the expos.  I got that impression again when I met with Joel Stubbs...but when you are naive to muscle, it all looks big.  Believe me, somebody has thought that about you too.  Same goes for others on the boards.

Here is my review of Don Long's DVD, and he was HUGE in it:

I second that Chic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A heroin user will never get as high as they did the first time out...more or less (I'm sure there are exceptions).  After having seen so many huge bodybuilders, I don't know who is left to knock my socks off at expos.  Abbas Khatami once had Jim Manion critique his physique, but Jim was a guy who saw it all.  I wonder if I will ever get that sense of awe again, the one McFarland described from when he saw Tom at the gym.

Definitely.  I'm pretty sure it was more dehydration and pain killers than it was gear.  Tom has an extreme personality, and also a reckless one which is a bad combination.  I mostly didn't like his rude attitude on the boards, but I admit, I was harsher on him than a lot of other people were and I apologize for that.

I assume he is still bigger and leaner than I am for instance.  I don't think by very much, but I would think he has at least 10-20 pounds of lean muscle than me.  I could see him being a lean 195 at 5'8 which is by no means skinny - a shadow of his former self, but not bad compared to the general public.

At 5,8 hed be lucky to be 150 pounds when i was that skinny in my teenage years i was 165 at 6ft.

Even if he was swallowing 30 advil a day he must have been on some other drugs to have that sort of effect on his Kidneys.

Don Long is on dialysis and must be 235, i think Prince has given up hope, im sure extra calories and some moderate workouts could get him to 220 if he cannot his health must really be in the shitter.

And yes HE NEARLY DIED FOR US BITCHES so i give him respect.

Are you not suppose to workout as hard when you are on dialysis?
Bump for an answer. What is the danger of training while on dialysis? I have heard this before in regards to Flex Wheeler.

When I first saw that picture of Tom that I just posted the initial thoughts to pop through my head were "ghastly" or "macabre" or "cryptic".  Maybe it is just because I am comparing Tom to former versions of himself, but it kind of freaks me out to see him go so far downhill like that.  Also, Dave and Bob "predicted" we would reply like this.  ;D

Honestly, despite whatever he may have said on here, I hope he has his health.  Being an ass on a message board is forgivable in my opinion.  I haven't heard any stories of Tom being a scumbag in person, so I wish him the best.

Don does a different type of Dialysis which he does every night as he sleeps (8-10 hours)...Tom does the regular treatments which are every other day (4 hours) ...I'm certainly no expert on the subject, but i'm sure not everyone is a candidate for the overnight system...

TRaining and keeping muscle mass on makes it much more difficult to clean the blood through dialysis, as many more toxins are produced as well as waste from excess protein...beleive me, TP tried to keep a regular training program...it was making it worse....

I don't know...we didn't weigh him when he walked in.

When he was 220, I told you he was 220...now he's lighter.

Tom doesn't care what he weighs...WHY DO YOU??

we don't care what he weighs, we just dislike lies and deceit.  So admit that you were lying about his weight in the past and the comments will stop.

Tom's condition would be very sad, if not for the fact that he self-induced it and used to make fun of guys that were natural.  Now he is reaping the consequences.  It is a good lesson for those tempted to turn to the darkside

Chick, usually do not agree with you or think you act pompous, but nice post, really, It's one thing to attack Jay, he is the pro, not his wife, so way uncool, also, I really used to like Prince when he competed, sorry to hear about the dialysis, hope he can stay as healthy as possible

It was Adonis that raised the question, made the challenge to bet, which I accepted...and he welched.

I knew what Toms weight was simply for the fact that he has to get weighed every time he goes to dialysis.....it was a slam dunk. You think I would have put up $10K if I was guessing??

I didn't know he was on conventional dialysis.  No wonder he looks like that.  I was on dialysis for about 4 months a few years ago.  I can tell you that you feel like shit just before dialisys (because of the build up of toxins) and just after.  It's also really hard to maintain any type of appetite because the renal diet is really bland and limited and because ALL FOOD tastes horrible.  Damn, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, no matter how big a dick he was.

So him looking like a long distance runner would probably be optimal.

It's prob true about a leaner body meaning less stress on the system. All the cultures known for extraordinary longevity consume far few calories than Americans. In fact, it's rare to see an elder Okinawan overweight, for instance.

It's a little shocking to see a former competitive bodybuilder lose mass like that but who cares? Bodybuilding is fun but it should promote health and well-being. Your family, health, and sound state of mind are far more important than how big you look. No one is going to be "Mr.Olympia" forever. Not even Ronnie Coleman.

Here is Tom's story.

To hell and back...now what? In 2003, Tom Prince's life nearly ended. This is his story.

Flex, Jan, 2004 by Greg Merritt
SYMPTOMS

Something wasn't right. Tom Prince always suffered more than most guys when prepping for a show - sacrificing sleep, energy and his voice in some cosmic exchange for striations. Sometimes in the depths of a diet, he caught a cold or flu bug, as others do when their defenses are down. But this was different. The symptoms were odd - itchy skin, dry tongue, swollen ankles, labored breathing - and they lingered throughout the end of March and into April.

He tried to ignore the warning signs, confident he'd wake up one day and they'd be gone. In the midst of dieting and training for the 2003 Night Of Champions on May 31, Prince was determined that nothing would slow him down. Antibiotics quelled the problems for a few days, but soon the symptoms were back and worse than ever.

Prince was perpetually fatigued more than two months away from the NOC much more so than he should have been in even the final low-carb days. Training partner Bob Cicherillo had to drop him off at the front door of Gold's Gym Venice, because Prince lacked the energy to walk from the parking lot. He could always find the strength to push a weight for the 10 seconds of a set, and he remained nearly as strong as ever, but between sets it was all he could do to stay awake. One day, he couldn't do even one minute of cardio.

The gym ethos is to block out pain, to revel in it even, to push on through and grow stronger for having anguished. For better or worse, no bodybuilder embraced that ethos more than Tom Prince. One of the world's strongest trainers, capable of three reps of shoulder presses with 455 pounds and seven reps of 900-pound hack squats, he had suffered greatly for his physique. Possessing a rebuilt shoulder and knee and chronically sore joints, he downed painkillers by the fistful to make it through another workout. Still, his low-rep attack rarely wavered. It was that never-give-up mentality that kept him from the doctor too long. It was that, and it was the fear of what the doctor might say.

DIAGNOSIS

The nosebleeds were the worst. They sometimes wouldn't stop for hours, and his blood was as thick as syrup. On April 10, a little more than seven weeks before the Night Of Champions, Tom's wife, Rebecca, dragged him to a local hospital. After a doctor did a checkup and took his blood, Tom and Rebecca waited. Prince was anxious to get this behind him, confident he would reach the shape of his life and win the NOC.

When the doctor returned, she pulled Rebecca aside and said in a hushed voice, "I want you to be calm. There's nothing to be too scared or worried about, but you need to take Tom to the emergency room right now."

Prince overheard and asked, "You mean right now, right now? Or are you talking, like, tomorrow?"

The doctor answered firmly, "No, right now." She showed Prince his lab report, circling a number. "See that right there? That's your creatinine level. See that 6.9?"

Prince already knew what a normal creatinine level was. He knew it wasn't supposed to be any higher than 2.0 for a man of his musculature.

"What's failing?" he asked.

"5.9."

"So am I having kidney failure?"

"Yes."

Prince went numb. He sighed. He looked at his wife. Tears streamed down Rebecca's face. Prince held her hand and told her everything would be OK, but it was just something people say at times like that. The truth was he wasn't certain of anything anymore.

Tom and Rebecca drove to a nearby restaurant and ordered ice cream. Prince had been dieting, after all, and he knew then that the diet was done. What he didn't know was just how close he was to dying. If he had, he never would have stopped on his way to the ER. Meanwhile, Rebecca had already gone from devastated to dauntless. "You can only surprise her for a minute," Prince says. "She's tough as hell in tough times."

CRITICAL CONDITION

The waiting room of the hospital emergency ward was full of the sick and injured, staring morosely at the floor. When Prince showed the staff his lab report, he jumped to the front of the line and was whisked into the trauma area. After his chest was x-rayed, Prince was guided to a bed and a spray was squirted in his mouth. He asked what the x-ray showed.

"You're in heart failure, too," the doctor answered.

That was the lowest moment, the one where Prince truly wondered if he was facing his final hours. Heart failure! He didn't know then that heart failure could be a consequence of persisting acute kidney damage. Water starts to build up in the feet and ankles. The water had increased to such a degree in Prince's body that, at any moment, he could have literally drowned in his own fluids.

TREATMENT

The mouth spray contained nitroglycerin to relieve the heart problems. Immediately, the medical staff put Prince on a diuretic to purge his body of excess water. They also administered medicine to bring down his skyrocketing blood pressure and antibiotics for yet another problem: bleeding ulcers.

A few hours later, the diuretic was doing its job and Prince was feeling much better. By the time Cicherillo visited the hospital the next day, Prince felt nearly normal. Still, he looked close to death. The gregarious man known as "Angry Bob" saw his training partner lying in a bed, hooked up to electrodes and oxygen, with tubes taped to him and going every which way. Cicherillo didn't care if he ever traded sets of leg presses with Prince again. He just wanted to trade barbs with him until they were old and gray.

Prince lay in the hospital bed for days, contemplating his wife, his two children from his previous marriage, his friends, his bodybuilding career and his uncertain future. He asked how he could have done this to himself. Rebecca sneaked in fruit and Nutri-Grain bars to supplement his "kidney diet" of hot tea and lettuce. "If I was dying. I didn't want it to be of starvation." Prince jokes.

He went on kidney dialysis for five days in a row. After the third day, his creatinine level was down to 3.9 - still dangerously high, but it meant his kidneys were functioning at about 50%, compared to the 15% they were at previously. The doctors said it was rare for a patient to recover so dramatically, so quickly, but then it was also rare for a 34-year-old man to have kidney and heart failure. One week after he was admitted to the hospital, he was released, facing an uncertain future of thrice-weekly dialysis treatments.

CAUSES

When Prince heard the horrifying news of his kidney failure, he immediately thought it was from the bodybuilding drugs he had been ingesting and injecting for years. A doctor in the emergency ward asked if he was taking any recreational drugs.

"Well, I don't smoke or drink, but there are a few steroids and things I take," Prince answered.

"Tell me every steroid you've ever taken," the doctor said, her pen poised over a form.

"Ever? You're gonna need another pen."

When Prince recalled his every bodybuilding drug, the length of the list shocked even him. Despite his quip about pen ink, he hadn't truly realized how great the quantities had become. Still, it wasn't the anabolic steroids, growth hormone and similar substances that alarmed the doctors. Those, they said, were predominantly filtered out via his liver and shouldn't be affecting his kidneys so drastically. It was the eight Advil tablets he swallowed two or three times per day to cope with his joint pain that truly made alarm bells ring. Doctors explained that he could go into kidney failure simply from megadosing painkillers. (Advil recommends using no more than six tablets over 24 hours, to see a doctor if using other drugs and to discontinue use of the analgesic after 10 days.)

Prince was stunned. How could he, a 300-pound bodybuilder who regularly self-injected steroids, be felled by over-the-counter ibuprofen? In addition to the excessive amounts of painkillers, the doctors blamed his kidney troubles on his off-the-chart blood pressure, and they theorized that his high-protein diet might also have contributed - although, if his kidneys were otherwise normal, protein would rarely cause complications on its own. Prince believes the steroids and similar drugs contributed to his high blood pressure. "It wasn't one thing. It was everything together," he says.

PREVENTION

Prince realizes now that his kidneys may have started to falter nearly two years prior when, while prepping for the 2001 Mr. Olympia, he had the peculiar problem of water "pocketing" in odd areas of his body. Kidneys work to filter waste products from blood and maintain the body's water and electrolyte balance. Unusual water retention can be an early sign of problems.

Prince's biggest regret now is that he didn't have a blood test performed sooner. "If I had to do it over, I would've gone to a doctor a couple of times per year," he states. "They could have caught it much, much earlier. I can think back to when I used to have headaches a couple times per week, and that was as early as '99. I think that's when I first started having high blood pressure and didn't do anything about it. My first blood test on April 10 cost only $80, and it took an hour to do. That seems like a paltry sum of money and time for your health. One of the biggest messages I want to get across to all bodybuilders doing drugs is to get regular blood tests. I'm afraid most guys won't do it, because, like I didn't want to know, they don't want to know. But maybe my story will scare them enough. Maybe my story will save someone's life."

For those who fear medical professionals will condemn them or fail to comprehend the unique aspects of a bodybuilding lifestyle, Prince says that all the doctors and nurses always treated him with the utmost respect and concern. In addition to the need for semiannual blood tests, he also wants to caution bodybuilders against abusing any drug, from over-the-counter painkillers to steroids. He knows all too well the fallacy of the bodybuilding mentality that if two is good, four must be twice as good.

Prince was 23 when he did his first steroid cycle. His dosages were low at first, but through the years, he gradually raised the quantities when he felt his body had become accustomed to the previous amount. By 2002, he was spending more than $4,000 on a range of 13 drugs (not all anabolic steroids) for a 16-week contest cycle. He now knows it was overkill, and it almost killed him. What's worse, he knows of bodybuilders at the local novice level who are using and spending twice as much.

"It's crazy," he says. "There's no advantage. It's fear that kept me doing it, and fear that keeps a lot of guys doing even more - fear that you'll lose and you could've done more. The thing is you can fill up a cup only so much. Once it's full, that's it. It's like eating 3,000 grams of protein a day or training legs 10 hours straight. It doesn't do any more good, so it can only be bad."

Prince hasn't been reborn as a disciple of "Just Say No," but he does point out that bodybuilding drugs are vastly overrated. When he did his first steroid cycle at age 23, Prince already weighed a muscular 242 pounds (at 5'8"), thus highlighting that the three most important factors for muscle growth are genetics, hard work and a proper diet, generally in that order. As Cicherillo puts it: "All the drugs in the world won't make a pit bull out of a Chihuahua."

RECOVERY

Throughout the spring and summer of 2003, Prince continued dialysis three days per week; he should be off dialysis by the time you read this. His kidneys are working at approximately 80%, good enough to function on their own but probably not good enough to make it through a normal lifespan. In all likelihood, Prince will need a kidney transplant. During a highly emotional phone conversation, Tom's younger brother, Scott (his only sibling), offered to be his donor.

One week after he returned home from the hospital, Prince was back in the gym training with Cicherillo. Sitting at home made him feel like a sick slug. Slowly, his energy returned. The doctors upped his daily protein intake from 100 grams per day to 250. His weight went back up to more than 300. In August, drug-free for four months and having purposely shed a few pounds, he weighed 285 with as much muscle as ever.

The hardest part is training without painkillers. His elbow and shoulder joints ache, but he still labors through the workouts. All the while, Cicherillo encourages him to use lighter weights and higher reps. "The biggest challenge for Tom won't be physical," Cicherillo says. "It's mental. Now it's a whole different agenda. The mentality has to change from being the biggest, strongest, toughest guy in the gym and throwing around ridiculous amounts of weight. It's a whole different career now. And, in my opinion, accepting that is going to be the biggest obstacle - being able to say, 'You know what? That was a chapter that's now gone. I'm not going to be able to do 700-pound squats and 90-pound dumbbell curls anymore.'

Lying in the hospital bed, Prince first thought he would never compete again. Then he briefly flirted with the idea of competing natural, perhaps I even giving up his pro card and entering the 2004 NPC Team Universe Championships. By July - with his blood pressure under control, his kidneys out of the danger zone and his blood getting tested regularly - he had settled on a new strategy: competing again but with only a minimum amount of bodybuilding drugs (less than one-third of what he used before for a precontest cycle). If his health is still strong, he will begin preparations for the 2004 Night Of Champions in late January.

"I look at it as a challenge to see how good I can get on a reduced contest cycle," he says. Prince aims to prove to everyone that the drug intake is out of control and unnecessary, if not counterproductive. He'll also be extremely careful. "As my blood data comes in every two weeks, if there's any sign that something's going wrong, I'll stop my preparation instantly. I'm trying to be optimistic, but not so much that I'll just ignore whatever comes my way or whatever I see."

Prince plans to compete at a lighter bodyweight than in his previous pro shows, where he was around 260. He'll probably be less than 250, maybe even less than 240. "I saw Victor [Martinez] win the NOC at around 235," he says, "and he's an inch taller than me. That kind of gives me hope. I can't be as ridiculously big as possible anymore." Perhaps that's a good thing, as some say Prince displayed his best shape as a sub-240-pound amateur.

One of the invaluable lessons Prince's ordeal taught him was to cherish each moment. That includes every workout, every meal, every joke with Cicherillo. It also includes the challenge of preparing for a contest again - the same show he was striving for one year before when his life was altered forever. "If my next show is my last one, I'd like it to be the NOC," he says. "And wouldn't it be a great ending if I won it and then retired?"

At the end of the interview for this article, Prince is nearly doubled over, laughing the loudest at one of Peter McGough's typical (and potentially libelous) bodybuilding tales from way back. The best ending to Prince's story won't come at the Night Of Champions. It has nothing to do with sets or reps or bodybuilding awards. The best ending will be Tom Prince laughing that same hearty guffaw 50 years from now.

When Tom used to say it was so difficult for him to lose muscle despite slacking off in the gym and not eating properly, it now makes me realize just how much of a hyper-responder he was to using gas.  For example, when Tom said he went six months never eating more than three meals a day and not training and still maintained his size, what he failed to point out was that he was still on cycle during that time.

Steroids + push-ups/chin-ups + decent diet > Natural hard training + excellent diet.

you're either extremely guillible, or you think people on this board are blind.

your aids patient friend was 175lb then, and more like 150lb now.

hope this helps..

Chick will defend his bottom twink until the end.

don't underestimate the loyalty these guys have for each other. they alternate cycles of gear so they can all take turns being on top/bottom. it's the way things are done in the ifbb.

The man nearly lost his life over some questionable bodybuilding regimes he endured to push the envelope like many others have in this crazy sport. Tom P is alive and doing  ok now, give him a break.
Jay and is lovely wife make a wonderful couple and both are a class act.
Being funny and making cracks is part of the boards and bodybuilding, but some her are just way over the top.

After the third day, his creatinine level was down to 3.9 - still dangerously high, but it meant his kidneys were functioning at about 50%, compared to the 15% they were at previously. Tom came across very intelligently in the Battle for the Olympia 2001 DVD.  He came across like an inconsiderate jerk in the 2002 DVD, giving Gunter the Hitler salute in Gunter's scene.  That was the first video footage I ever saw of Tom and I originally thought that he had just not adequately developed social skills growing up.  Now I am led to believe he was just in a nubain haze during most of his time spent working out.  As I said, the 2001 footage is indicative of Tom being pretty intelligent.

Interesting story. It must be terrible to hear a doctor tell you your body isn't working anymore.

I doubt anyone here has taken pharmacology or even researched pain killers on the net?  Sounds like you may have.

Serious question:  Are Advil , Motrin, and Ibuprofen very hard on the kidneys/liver? In what doses? And how do they compare to heavy cycles of anabolics ... or diuretics?

Advil, Motrin, and Ibuprofen are all Ibuprofen.
Advil and Motrin are both name brands of the drug Ibuprofen.  Remember that and laugh the next time some idiot tells you that they have to take Advil, because Motrin "does nothing for them."

Ibuprofen is an NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug).
They can cause kidney failure, most typically in those with pre-existing mild kidney disease.
The recommended dose is about 1-3g per day max, depending if there is physician monitoring.

It is actually metabolized by the liver in both phases, but isn't largely liver toxic.  I believe the kidney problems come from the metabolites (been a while since school....long while), but this is the primary concern as far as organ damage.

Ulcers are also common.

I would guess that the advil sped up the kidney degeneration in Tom.  The Advil is a very likely culprit in the ulcers as well.

I would surmise that the chronic IV usage of cocaine and nubain were both more harmful in the grand scheme of things however.

Why did the writer call you "Angry Bob"?

That was a nickname that was given to Bob. If I remember the story right, Bob was standing in line a grocery store and a little kid asked why Bob was so big or something like that. Bob told the kid and somehow the kid replied to the effect of "Why aren't you called 'Angry Bob' or something like that?" And the name stuck.
Pretty vague, but something along those lines. :-[

Pre-existing?  Meaning genetic predisposition?  1-3mg sounds like a lot!  I never take more than two 400mg tabs if I have pain.

Would Vicodin be a better option for bodybuilders?

Are the ulcers related to the Colitis that we see commonly in bodybuilders?

Nubain use (sadly) seems common too.   But aren't injectables easier on the liver/kidneys than orals?

Thanks for your info!

vicoden has Tylenol in it, and that stuff is liver toxic in high dosages..Also it's addicting as hell..

Pre-existing genetic factors (FSGS) would definitely make a difference.
Even taking 4 200mg tablets twice a day won't cause any real damage.  You have to be mega dosing NSAIDs for a long time for major repercussions.

Vicodin is so high in acetominophen that the acetominophen becomes the danger.  You can take a good amount of hydrocodone for longer periods of time and be fine.
But, as your body adapts to that drug, you'll need higher doses to feel good (which is why most people take vicodin.  Hydrocodone isn't that great of a pain med.  The acetominophen is doing most of the work) and the 'legal' portion of the vicodin is what does people in.

I would think the colitis is at least somewhat related to the diet.  All the high fibre foods like brown rice, with the surrounding husk, and the like that can damage the intestinal lining is probably a factor in the colitis.

Nubain is just a way to get stoned without calories.  That is all it is.
A bbing diet is boring as shit.  Eat all day, train, don't do anything.  It goes by better when you're stoned.  Give an uneducated bloke the chance to think that his drug (nubain) can someone "help" him (train harder), and the abuse will soon folllow.

The Cocaine has many effects.  Cocaine causes various forms of cellular necrosis across the board.
There is a type of heart dysfunction of reduced ejection fraction that is a Cocaine induced cardiomyopathy.  Reduced heart function is closely related to poor kidney function.

The ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease, right? And I think the etiology is unknown (?) - I haven't seen anything about diet being the cause. Being that steroids affect immunity could they trigger the disease, or make it blossom earlier than had you not used steroids?

That's because diet isn't the cause.  ::)

You're right, UC has an unknown etiology, but the concept behind the disease is simple...with an inflamed colon a patient will suffer from malabsorption/malnutrition.  Any blood thinner would've complicated colitis more than anabolic steroid use, in someone who already has UC.

Please be careful of the "advise" you pick up on this board.  Even now, I believe tpm's posts are wikipedia/pubmed driven and are comical at best!  Just look at your initial question about ibuprofen compared to AAS/diuretics on the kidneys....all he did was spit out blind facts about said drugs and missed your question entirely.  ::)

Someone told me this:

"androgens promote the secretion of Th2 type cytokines that are found in association with ulcerative colitis"

And referred to this abstract:

Quote
Acta Physiol Hung 2000;87(4):355-72

Immunology of inflammatory bowel diseases.

Lakatos L.

Gastroenterology Unit, Cholnoky Ferenc Hospital, Veszprem, Hungary.

The pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases involves complex interactions among genetic, environmental and immunologic factors, where the immune system plays a crucial role. The initiating factor may be a commonly present environmental antigen, but the defective mucosal immune response can't downregulate the inflammatory process, the resulting in chronic inflammation and tissue damage. The abnormal amplification of the immune system seems more likely to be a secondary and not a primary factor in the disease. IBD patients exhibit abnormalities in epithelial antigen presentation, and in the cellular and humoral immune system. The role of autoimmunity is unclear in IBD. The inflammatory mediator production and balance is also altered in IBD. Crohn's disease is characterised by a Th1 cytokine profile, while ulcerative colitis is characterised rather by a Th2 cytokine profile Recent advances in the understanding of the pathogenesis of IBD led to major changes in the treatment of the disease. The newer agents target the key mediators involved in the inflammatory process.

It sounds like he has been through a lot in the last couple of years. It would be nice to hear him on your Bodybuilding talk show someday....

I've never heard that...hmmm

If this is true then androgens would in fact promote the "inflammatory" response induced by Th2, IgM and IgE antibodies, leading to a greater amount of differentiation of mast cells i.e. INFLAMMATION  :o

So yeah, they would in fact excacerbate the problem, rather than help it.  Again, this would be in a pre existing case though, as a rise in Th2 would not cause UC.  But once UC has developed, AAS would cause a greater inflammatory response.

Good to know for anyone diagnosed with IBD or UC...stay off the juice!

You are quite the Brutal one, aren't ya!

I have never studied colitis, so I made the guess that there could be some dietary impact to the progression of the disease.  If you're a top researcher in the field of intestinal disease, you probably have better information than me.

As for facts being "blind," that is an interesting point of view.
You're welcome to cross-reference anything I say with any website.  You'll find no plagiarism in my posts.

Either way, it seems Van_Bilderass has already shown your ignorance on UC, so anything I would say is a moot point by now.

I've read all of those studies too, Bob.  People often remember different things during accidents when firstly given false information in the form of leading questions - for example "Was there a little bit of blood or a lot of blood at the scene of the accident?"  The way that type of question is worded implies that there was blood, period.  Meanwhile, there was no blood at all, but the individuals have already been swayed to answer in a certain way which results in the formation of false memories at times.

Cognitively it's not really the same thing in this case.  What I'm saying is that people who did not go to getbig had read the comments that Tom had previously written.  Some not only didn't read getbig, but didn't even know it had a message board or knew nothing about it at all.  Where then did the false memory originate?

Also, I seldom forget these kinds of things.  May I be wrong here?  Possibly, but as I said, I very rarely am.  I remember details like this very well, it's just how my brain operates.  Also, I have spoken with Guy Grundy and he is a very credible person and I don't think he would put his own credibility and the credibility of Musclemag on the line by quoting from a guest under Tom's name.  That would just be silly.

Speaking of which, I am backlogged in DVDs to review and did not review Guy's latest DVD yet.  :-\  So I will plug his first DVD which was very well done:

Jeff, do you remember when TP came on here and called Craig out?  The thread was deleted after a while and I had copied it for posterity but lost it since...it was some wild no holds barred shit...he calls him out for intentionally selling fake drugs, stealing money from people, fucking other people's wives and numerous other things I can't remember...I loved it...

When Matt T came on here and exposed 240 or Bust (subsequently leading to 240's 15 minute meltdown and account deletion/renewal) I saved the thread and unlike you, I did not since lose it.  ;D

gh15, what about Bob Chick off AAS?

I thought you said Italians were good BBers...like Levrone who was a mix of Black and Italian?

bob would be big guy but nothing like what he became on hormones,,bob would be like the leaf kid but bigger taller thicker version of it if was natural at single digit,,he is not good example because he actually trained for dozens of years with little time off so his foundation is to take to the grave
levrone would look avrage with out hormones

I wonder if Bob could hold a lean 220 at his height.  And by lean, I do mean a true 6%.  Since he is taller, that would be quite a build.  I know  guys around his height that are 200 but very lean and look huge.

that would be about right.....I was 198 lbs natural in contest condition waaaay back in 1990 still managing to take a 5th at the Nats...I would imagine another 18 years of training since then has put on a few lbs. of muscle....215 -220 would be close

So Bob, for guys not on HRT or any other gear, would you say just keep plugging it away with moderate reps and good diet like you?  What do you recommend in terms of nutrition to grow (not fat)?

CONSISTANCY is the key...always has been.

Consistancy in eating clean foods, training...

Training SMARTER not HARDER.

I think a lot of retired pros just give it up completely...not just drugs but the whole works.  Maybe they just see no pleasure in being smaller and muscular, and it's all or nothing with them.  I don't see why a retired pro couldn't still hold decent size even clean or just on HRT.

Many do...Gaspari, Labrada, Yates, Haney, Padilla, Bannout...all retain god conditioning and decent size. Others simply walk away as "retired"means just that...DONE!

ha ha,
10 people read the same thread and see different things?
monster analogy there chick.

I remember tom kidney's classic post

"I'd like to seem him try something in front of 800 lbs of muscle"

despite your attempts to do damage control (basically by lying),
too many people read that gay thread to deny it.

I'm not going to rehash the entire thing...again. JUst like 10 people at an accident all seem to see different things...

The post wasn't from Tom, it was from someone using the same handle with a period (.) at the ...

Doesn't take a genius to figure this one out...Tom hated Craigs guts.

I don't forget something like that...I just don't.  It should be obvious from my posts here that I can remember past threads dating back years with extreme accuracy.  Should you research them and happen to find them at www.archive.org you will see that I am indeed accurate.  The main proof that Tom did post that at mayhem is that people read the thread who NEVER read getbig.  Then how did they read it if not on mayhem?

Why not ask yourselves the easiest and most basic of questions? why on Gods green earth would Tom come to Craigs defense when they absolutely hated each other. Tom despised Craig as his later posts would indicate...

It wasn't posted on Mayhem, it was posted HERE as if it was over there....strangly, no one seems to be able to find it now...Hmmmmm.

God you guys are easily duped........

I'm an ectomorph...Tom is an EGOmorph.  ;D

If you're seeking Tom's motivation, he was just bigging himself up as being able to beat an MMA fighter.

For the record Bob, the thread WAS here:

http://www.chadnicholls.net/forums/showthread.php?p=401425

Of course somebody on mayhem had it either deleted or moved which is why it cannot be viewed.  It has since been deleted from the google cache archives and is not available at archive.org.

As I said, people saw the thread who had never even heard of getbig.  I could possibly buy that someone else posted under Tom Prince's account (although even that is far out there), but I will not accept that it was not ever posted on mayhem.

PS - I'm pretty sure I have a copy of it on my old computer which was stolen but later recovered but now needs a lot of work to retrieve all the past data.  I was in the habit of saving screen caps at the time to prove my case in instances like these.

you're assuming that Tom Kidney's applied some sort of logical thinking in his posts?
he probably made that post on one of his nubain "maintenance" days.

btw - all ifbb pro/drug users have a tendency to tell little lies,
including covering up for their disgraced friends.
