Title: Lower Back Injury
Post by: Butterbean on April 10, 2008, 09:24:05 AM
I posted this on the injury board also

At the end of my leg workout today I was doing deadlifts and something pulled/popped/what? in my middle lower back area about 3 inches above my tailbone.  It hurts and I can't walk very well.

My chiropractor is out today and I'm scared to go there right now anyway.

Heat?  Hot tub?  Ice?  Help please    :'(  :'(

I didn't hear anything but it felt like something "sqwinked" or something.  My workout partner called and said her back is starting to hurt in the same place!

Thanks AV!  Did your treatment include Chiropractic only?  Anything else (other suggestions) please?

Stella, I would go see a REAL doctor first instead of a chriopractor. Maybe after the doctor, then you can visit a chriopractor to get an adjustment, but chriopractors are not MD's and they dont know the first thing about real medical conditions. They act like they do, but thats why they are chriopractors and not real doctors. You may need some pain medication also, and they wont be able to help you. Bottom line, if it sounded bad, it could very well be minor or major, and a real MD can help you. Hope all is well with you. Try ice and heat on it also.

STella, my injury was muscular and I sought treatment through a physio... They did massage, EMS, hot/cold and core exercise

Stella, I am sorry to hear this.   :'(

Same thing happened to me several years ago deadlifting.  My guess is that you crunched a disc in your lower back.  You definitely need to see the chiro ASAP.  WHen it happened to me, I was stupid and ignored it for a few days, and I made it way worse by training until it seized up completely and my husband had to carry me to the chiro and I had to walk with a cane for a week.  ::)

I'm concerned about all of the heat recommendations.  Right now, I think you need to ICE it.  You should ice an injury for at least the first 48 hours or so to reduce any swelling or inflamation, especially if you don't know what exactly is wrong.

http://orthopedics.about.com/cs/sportsmedicine/a/iceorheat.htm

You should also see a doctor if you think it's a real serious injury, but unless something is torn and needs to be replaced or re-attached, the doctor isn't going to do much for you but medicate you.  Nothing wrong with that, of course.  ;D

When I hurt mine, I probably could have seen the chiro and recovered in a couple of weeks.  Instead, I was carried to the chiro and it took about 12-15 visits and 3 months to recover.

Keep us posted...I hope you feel better!!   :-*

Wow, I didn't realize so many people put their faith in chiropractors.  I know they introduce students to alternative therapies at med school (have speakers come in), so there's some level of credibility .... but this is surprising.

Can't help with the squink, as I'm not sure what one is.

How much were you deadlifting?

Agree with Rip on the ice recomendation, have had the Chiro i see say to use ice and also a physical therapist friend of mine says Ice always.  I have iced my back by lying on a cold pack and it is very cold for a few mins!!

Hope you are Ok soon.  I would take some Ibuprophin also 600mg first dose then 400mg preceding doses.

Alternating ice and heat will help reduce inflamation and help keep the muscles relaxed and maybe even prevent spasming.

Drugs too  ;)

Thanks everyone; I really appreciate all the input.

Yesterday I hot tubbed and later alternated between ice and plug in heating pad for the rest of the day.

Today I went to the regular doc and he believes it's muscular and that I should be OK in a week or 2.  I can walk much better this morning and the pain is there but much less than yesterday.  He gave me a script for Nabumetone and one for Chlorzoxazone but I'm thinking of not even having them filled.   I have some old 600mg tabs of MOtrin from 2004 ....think that's safe to use? :P

He said moist heat so maybe more hot tubs for me and I have this other heating pad that you put in the microwave and then strap in on your back that is along that order.

No lifting for one week and then lighter weights.  He said I could do cardio unless it became painful..then to back off.

For some reason I'm fearful of going to the Chiro when I am so sore.  I know he could help but I'm skeered :(

Thanks again everyone :)

The old Motrins should be OK to take, I would think.  Ibuprofin will definitely help.
I think you should still try to see the chiro as soon as you can.

Rest up this weekend, and I hope you feel better stella!!   :-*

hahaha good thing for sure!

I imagine the Tylenol would be fine, and prolly the other too.  I've never heard of Darvocets, but they rhyme with percocets, so they must be pretty good!!   ;D

Agree with Lori for first 48 you should ice...no heat will make it worse and more inflammed.  After that time you can alterante.  Advil and MSM to help with any inflammation as well.

GOod luck girlie, back injuries are no joke  :(

Glad you are feeling better all the way around!!  Dry heaving or throwing up with a lower back problem sounds HORRIBLE!   :-[

Make sure you recover fully before getting back into training real hard...take it easy!
