Diana Rigg, Star of ‘Game of Thrones’ and TV’s ‘The Avengers,’ Dies at 82

Diana Rigg, who was best known for her roles as Lady Olenna Tyrell on “Game of Thrones” and Emma Peel in the 1960s “The Avengers” TV series, died Thursday. She was 82.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we announce that Dame Diana Rigg died peacefully early this morning,” Rigg’s agent Simon Beresford said in a statement to TheWrap Thursday. “She was at home with her family who have asked for privacy at this difficult time. Dame Diana was an icon of theatre, film, and television. She was the recipient of BAFTA, Emmy, Tony and Evening Standard Awards for her work on stage and screen. Dame Diana was a much loved and admired member of her profession, a force of nature who loved her work and her fellow actors. She will be greatly missed.”

“My Beloved Ma died peacefully in her sleep early this morning, at home, surrounded by family,” Rigg’s daughter, Rachael Stirling, said in her own statement. “She died of cancer diagnosed in March, and spent her last months joyfully reflecting on her extraordinary life, full of love, laughter and a deep pride in her profession. I will miss her beyond words.”

Along with her iconic roles as intelligence agent Emma Peel and Lady Tyrell, a.k.a. the Queen of Thorns, Rigg was known for playing Tracy Bond, the wife of James Bond (played by George Lazenby), in 1969’s “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

She was also widely regarded for her theater work, serving as a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1959-64 and appearing in three Broadway productions: “Abelard and Heloise” in 1971, “The Misanthrope” in 1975, and “Medea” in 1994. Rigg received a Tony nomination for each part and a win for “Medea.”

Rigg was nominated for nine Emmys, with two of those nods being for “The Avengers” and four for “GoT,” and grabbed one win for her part as Mrs Danvers in the 1997 PBS miniseries “Rebecca.”

Among her numerous memorable TV credits are Rigg’s popular guest spots on BBC/HBO’s “Extras” in 2006 and “Dr. Who” in 2013. More recently, she appeared in the ITV series “Victoria,” BSkyB and NBC’s “You, Me and the Apocalypse,” and Channel 5’s “All Creatures Great and Small.”

Born in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, Rigg trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1955-57. She was married twice, first to Menachem Gueffen in 1973, whom she divorced three years later, and then to Archibald Stirling in 1982, whom she had daughter Rachael Stirling with before they divorced in 1990.

British boxing legend and former world champion Alan Minter has died at the age of 69 after suffering from cancer.

Minter, who won a bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, claimed the undisputed world middleweight title against Italian Vito Antuofermo in Las Vegas in 1980.

After he won a rematch against Antuofermo, Minter lost the title to Marvin Hagler inside three rounds at Wembley Arena later that year.

He had his last fight in 1981.

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg made history as the second female justice appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a member of the court’s liberal wing, she was known for her progressive votes and positions on some of the most important issues of the past few decades. Born in 1933 in Brooklyn, NY, she taught at Rutgers University Law School and Columbia University, where she became its first female tenured professor. She served as the director of the Women’s Rights Project of the American Civil Liberties Union during the 1970s for which she argued six landmark cases on gender equality before the U.S. Supreme Court. She was appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia in 1980. Named to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1993 by President Bill Clinton, Ginsburg became known for her impactful positions on many landmark cases during her tenure on the court.

I had no idea there was a woman under that makeup.

Star Wars: A New Hope Mos Eisley Cantina Actress Penny McCarthy Passes Away

Penny McCarthy, who had several roles working on the original Star Wars due to the almost guerrilla nature of the filmmaking involved, has passed away. McCarthy was an auditor and/or production assistant in a number of movies throughout the '70s and '80s, including the Rolling Stones documentary Let's Spend the Night Together, director Sydney Pollack's Absence of Malice, and Michael J. Fox's Bright Lights, Big City. When it came time to make Star Wars, McCarthy had three on-camera roles -- none of which would be recognizable to anyone who didn't already know it was her -- as well as some uncredited behind the scenes work.

McCarthy worked as an assistant auditor, as well as a hand double/stand-in for Carrie Fisher in Star Wars.
She also played a Cantina Band Member, a Jawa, and Kardue'sai'Malloc, a criminal seen on Tattooine. News of her passing came from Fantha Tracks, who in turn got the information from a pair of companies for whom McCarthy would sign autographs and make appearances.

"Such a shame to wake up to find that Penny McCarthy has sadly passed away," said a post on the Elite Signatures Facebook page. "My condolences goes out to her family, she was such a sweet heart and so glad i got to meet her again in December in LA."

Even the smaller roles McCarthy played were pretty memorable ones for hardcore Star Wars fans. She was the "restraining bolt" Jawa in A New Hope, one of the only ones to have anything resembling a personality, and the beat where she was the hand double for Leia? The close-up shot of Leia inserting the disc into R2-D2.

Her Hollywood career ended in the late '80s, and in recent years, McCarthy had earned some extra income by appearing at fan conventions around the world.

The roles she played on-camera were all fairly small, even if memorable -- but of course, Star Wars being the monolith that it is, a broader mythology rose up around Kardue'sai'Malloc later. The demonic-looking alien ended up demanding one of the highest bounties in the galaxy for crimes he committed, and ultimately ran afoul of Boba Fett. He, or someone like him, also appeared in the Star Wars Holiday Special, although not played by McCarthy that time around, and never named.

McCarthy's cause of death was not disclosed.

Michael Lonsdale, ‘Day of the Jackal’ Star & James Bond Villain Hugo Drax, Dies at 89

French actor Michael Lonsdale, who was known internationally for his roles as the villain Hugo Drax in the 1979 James Bond film “Moonraker” and detective Claude Lebel in “The Day of the Jackal,” has died. He was 89.

AFP confirmed news of the actor’s death, via his agent, on Monday.

Lonsdale won France’s Cesar for best supporting actor in 2011 for his role in Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods and Men.” His performance in “The Day of the Jackal” earned him a supporting actor BAFTA nomination.

Lonsdale was born to an English father and a French mother in Paris in 1931. He marked his acting debut in 1956 with “It Happened in Aden.” In a long and distinguished career, the actor amassed more than 200 credits, working with some of the greats of cinema.

Early in his career he worked with Orson Welles on “The Trial” (1962), René Clément in “Is Paris Burning?” (1964) and with François Truffaut in “The Bride Wore Black” and “Stolen Kisses” (both 1968). He also had roles in Jacques Rivette’s “Out 1” and Louis Malle’s “Murmur of the Heart” (both 1971).

He worked with Alain Robbe-Grillet on “Successive Slidings of Pleasure” and with Alain Resnais on “Stavisky” (both 1974). The same year saw Lonsdale collaborate with Luis Bunuel on “The Phantom of Liberty.”

1975 was also a stellar year for the actor, as he worked with Marguerite Duras on “India Song,” Joseph Losey twice on “The Romantic Englishwoman” and “Galileo” and Costa-Gavras on “Special Section.”

Lonsdale collaborated with John Frankenheimer on “The Holcroft Covenant” (1985) and “Ronin” (1998) and with Merchant Ivory on “Remains of the Day” (1993) and “Jefferson in Paris” (1995). He had a memorable outing with Jean-Jacques Annaud on “The Name of the Rose” (1986) and with Steven Spielberg in “Munich” (2005).

His last role was in 2016, on Loris Gréaud’s “Sculpt.”

Lonsdale was nominated in the Cesar supporting actor category twice more, for “Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud” (1995) and “Heartbeat Detector” (2007).

Farewell to a New Jersey original. 😞 Belleville native Tommy DeVito has passed away at the age of 92. Tommy was one of the founding members of The Four Seasons, the iconic New Jersey singing group that was immortalized by "The Jersey Boys".

President John Tyler's grandson, Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr., dies at 95

For many Americans, going two generations back takes them to World War II.

For Lyon Gardiner Tyler Jr., who died September 26, two generations stretched to a century earlier, when steam locomotives ruled the land and his grandfather was 10th president of the United States.

Tyler, 95, was the grandson of John Tyler, who served as president from 1841 to 1845.

He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease. A younger brother is among his survivors.

That someone in the 21st century could have a grandfather who knew Thomas Jefferson can be attributed to late-in-life paternity, second wives and longevity in his family: Three generations of Tyler men spanned an incredible 230 years.

While Tyler, a World War II veteran, lawyer and history professor at the Virginia Military Institute and The Citadel, was proud of his ancestor and spoke about him, it was not what defined his life.

His daughter, Susan Selina Pope Tyler, said Thursday that her father was a humble and compassionate man of faith who mentored others.

"He was kind and loving to everyone, even the marginalized," Susan Tyler wrote in remarks planned for a memorial service next week, which she shared with CNN.

"I've had many share with me how my father affected their lives, through his advice or his practical help."

Tyler lived in Franklin, Tennessee, at the time of his passing. He grew up in Virginia. His younger brother, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, 91, is now the last surviving grandson of the president.

John Tyler was elected vice president in 1840, but he was thrust into the role of commander-in-chief when President William Henry Harrison died just one month into office. His detractors consequently called him "His Accidency."

While most historians don't place him high in the pantheon of presidents, Tyler's family said he should be remembered for his honesty and integrity -- even if it cost him politically.

President Tyler, who served one term, fathered 15 children. His first wife, Letitia, had eight children before dying in 1842, and second wife Julia had seven. John Tyler was 63 when son Lyon Gardiner Tyler Sr. was born.

Lyon Sr., who went on to become president of William & Mary, was 71 when Lyon Jr. was born to his second wife.

The younger Lyon was a lawyer before turning to an academic career.

While John Tyler was a slave owner, his great-granddaughter Susan Tyler said her father and late mother, Lucy Jane Pope Tyler, championed civil rights.

Lyon Tyler Jr. himself had a bit of humor about being related to a US president.

"I heard too much about presidents growing up," he wrote in one speech he delivered. He related that when he was three or four, a woman asked, "Are you going to be President when you grow up?" He answered, 'I'll bite your head off.'" Then she asked, "And what will you do with the bones?" He told her, "I'll spit 'em out!"

Susan Tyler said her father took the family's fame in stride.

"Dad used to be asked if he knew John Tyler. He would always reply, 'I'm not that old' and he would laugh. He had a great sense of humor."

Did you catch the latest Jacob Rothschild video on YouTube, posted by Bloomberg Market News?  He's STILL moaning on about how his family are victims.  I think deep down, he's aware that if the entire population turns on him, as it did with the rise of Hitler, that his family can be tracked down and publicly executed.

I wonder why he's so paranoid about this.  His family has been immune from the law since they rose to prominence starting in the mid-18th century.  Hitler was the only person who ever arrested a Rothschild, yet Jacob Rothschild speaks as if his family has been so victimized.

I guess he's projecting.

Price Is Right and Hollywood Squares Host Tom Kennedy Dies at 93

Former game and talk show host Tom Kennedy has died. He was 93.

A cause of death was not immediately available at the news of Kennedy's passing first surfaced in a Facebook post from Steve Beverly, a friend of the late host's. According to Beverly, the host "had not been well in recent months," even though the two stayed in touch.

Throughout his career, Kennedy hosted upwards of 16 gameshows, most notably a nighttime version of The Price Is Right in the late 80's and You Don't Say!

Born in 1927, Kennedy graduated from the University of Missouri. During and immediately after his college years, Kennedy worked for several radio stations, including KFRU (Missouri), WKLX (Kentucky), and KPOL and KGIL (California). His first hosting gig then came in 1958 on NBC's short-lived The Big Game.

"With a heavy heart, I am sad to share the news that beloved game show host Tom Kennedy, who emceed 16 shows between 1958 and 1987, died Wednesday evening at his home in Oxnard, California. He was 93," Beverly wrote on Facebook. "Tom had not been well in recent months but remained in communication with his family and close friends."

He added, "In fact, only nine days ago after I sent him a photoshopped picture with himself with Curly Howard of The Three Stooges on the "Body Language" set, Tom emailed back to tell me he once played in a golfing group called the Hollywood Hackers. One of his regular playing partners was Larry Fine. His oldest daughter Linda phoned a half-hour ago to relay the news.

The pictures are of one of Tom's favorites from the latter part of his career and another with me interviewing Tom shortly after he received the National Broadcasting Society Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016."
