Venezuela's the new Cuba. Chavez has aspirations to be like his hero and close friend Fidel Castro. Becoming close allies with Russia and garnering their military protection enables Chavez to do what he wants to do in Venezuela with the U.S. too scared to do shit about it.

Only difference is, Cuba has always been poor. Venezuela has lots of oil, and the US depends on much of it.

Scared of what exactly...two Russian junk bombers...doing what exactly. Chavez can buy all the Russian junk he wants. He will collapse under his own power at some point. Russia can't protect chavez...I'll let ur legendary military mind figure that one out.
