Ilhan Omar: It would take something 'tragic' for Democrats to pick Biden or Buttigieg for president



Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota said in a podcast out Thursday that it would take something “tragic” for fellow Democrats to nominate Joseph R. Biden or Pete Buttigieg for president.

The first-term congresswoman made the comment while being asked about the candidates during a rapid-fire round of questions near the end of an interview conducted by The Intercept.


“If one of them is the candidate for your party, who would you rather it be?” she was asked by the interviewer.

“So you’re saying if something tragic happened and they ended up being the nominee?” Ms. Omarreplied.

Pressed further to answer with whatever comes to mind upon hearing both candidates’ names, Ms. Omar replied: “I don’t know. It’s hard. ‘None’ comes to my head.”

Ms. Omar has endorsed Sen. Bernard Sanders, Vermont Independent, as her preferred Democratic presidential candidate.

If you are an intellectually honest Democrat, you have to be sick that your top three choices are Biden, Warren, and Sanders, with people like Kamala Harris waiting in the wings.  What a truly terrible lot of candidates.

It wasn't decided, it was by default. Plenty of people could have run but didn't want to lose or be destroyed forever in a debate.

I don't completely agree.  I think both parties crown someone early in the process.  Republicans did it with Dole and McCain.  Democrats did it with Hillary Clinton and now Biden. 

I guess you could consider them "default" candidates, but the establishment and big money often pick someone early in the process.  They tried it with Jeb Bush very early, then abandoned him.

Different this time because the prior POTUS did NOT want Biden. That or the fact that Hillary scooped up all the power in the party and then lost, leaving no real brains in place to choose.

Joe Biden wanted an Iowa audience to know he’s not really a child molester, and devoted some of his stump speech yesterday to refute the notion.

Biden was in Iowa opening a Des Moines campaign office and brought up a meme supposedly floating around the internet.
