I have trained HIT in the original and then the 4 day split form and finally in the last version. The last version I followed to the letter and it was brutal. I could not train again for a week or more. And I didn't grow or get stronger.
The original version is, to me, the best but still I did not get any stronger or bigger. The main ingredient that Mike left out was....STEROIDS.
The drugs are the ONLY thing that truly separates the so-called "genetically superior champs" from the rest of us that are supposedly "genetically inferior" to them. With steroids (and Mike admittedly took them), you grow. And grow...And GROW.

Again this just personal opinion but find somewhere in the middle ground to be better, 6-10 working sets to failure a week per body part, few different exercises per body part to ensure complete development.

Finding the volume level your body can handle and then doing that consistently for years > any fad routine. Every person has a different genetic make up, so there is no best routine.
Learning to listen to your body is the way to avoid injuries and keep from burning out.

I respond better to high intensity than volume. In the long run i find extreme high intensity to be very taxing to the nervous system and even to the muscle itself. Nowadays i never rep to failure, otherwise i burnout quickly.
I believe Mike took his own example as the norm and not very people is blessed with great genetics like him. He was know to get in shape very quickly even eating like a bird.

Dead on. Ironically natural trainers seem to train with (s)HIT more than anyone else and they gain the least from it. Naturals need more frequency rather than destroying themselves in 1 workout and then recovering for several days.

His nut hugging followers John Little and Peter Sisco had a video training program out where they were telling clients they would get to the point where they would only have to train once every 6 months or even once every year! In what way was mentzer a genuis? His ideas have been debunked long ago. No top elite bodybuilder, enhanced and natural, don't even use his methods. And yes that goes for Yates too.
If hit worked so well how come in 50 years it has never, ever proven what it promises. Even mentzer never practiced what he preached. They guy was out of shape most of the time because he was lazy. He wasn't a true bodybuilder. He built his body the conventional way, just look at his pics at 19. He had already most of the size from lifting high volume. Then he went into bodybuilding contests, got lucky on some wins but was mostly thrashed by better bodybuilders such as Zane, Szkalak, Coe, Dickerson and, of course, Arnold.
He regurgitated Ayn Rands nonsense which is a philosophy that should only appeal to disillusioned teenage boys. Agree with most of what you say.... but Ayn Rand 'rubbish' ? Have to disagree. Objectivism is a solid philosophy. While books like Anthem, Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead were just as insightful and precautionary as 1984 or Brave New World, just a tad over done, too long , too self indulgent but otherwise quality works.

I used an earlier variant of Heavy Duty to considerable effect, and won the teen class of the NPC Tri-county in the general Charlotte area two years in a row, drug-free. I was doing something right...a few of the other guys asked me about my prep cycle, and I had no clue what they were on about.
I've since come to appreciate shying away from failure and doing more work sets, but I still don't think there's any reason to do more than 9-16 work sets/bodypart per week, ideally spread across two sessions if you can swing it.

Some say it's the Art Jones routine; e.g., 8-12 Nautilus machines each taken to a set of positive failure in full-body workouts performed thrice weekly.

See, Mike thought that, as long as someone "triggered the growth mechanism" bu training to failure, ANY lack of progress MUST be attributed to "overtraining" and, as such, the only way to stay ahead of poor progress was to add more and more rest days :/

Mike was smart in a business sense because he gave people what they wanted. Something for nothing. Work hard for 15-20 minutes once a week and you'll be at your best. Muscles in minutes. He backed it up with client data where people were supposedly gaining 30-40 pounds of muscle in a few months. Obviously this isn't possible even on the strongest steroids. He pawned himself off as pre med, a science guy. He made plenty of money especially towards the end.
In truth Mike's rep speed isn't supported by studies. Neither is his low volume, and beyond failure techniques. At his peak in 1979, and 1980 Mike did far more warm up sets and total volume in comparison to his later programs. He also did an absolute shitload of running. 10-12 miles some days. He should have factored this in as well.

Dorian Yates used conventional methods to build 99% of his mass, not hit.
Mentzer did high volume most of the time. John Terilli trained with mentzer and saw him do 25 sets for the back alone.

As I have said before, I saw the Mentzers train one day with Viator at the original Gold's. That's true and their training was brutal.
I had Mike's final book and unless you are on more bathtub gin than bhanky or can get genuine Dianabol it is too much of a shock to my system to train like that. To a lesser degree, Brooks Kubik's "Dinosaur Training" is almost as hard on the body. I did both and I enjoyed Kubik's methods a bit more than Mentzer's.
When I first tried Mentzer's HIT it was in the mid '70s and the four day split would have been my choice had I had the nerve to take steroids like some of my friend did. They did much better than me on HIT but when they got off (as they always did) the drugs everything still went away. ;) ;D
Mike wasn't a genius. Mike wasn't a moron. He was a marketing wiz and for a while he did really well with his courses which, when you consider that it was the exact same stuff as he did in the Weider magazines with the exact same pictures, makes the morons the guys that bought the magazine with his training in them and then ordered the HIT courses from that same magazine. ;D
Mentzer's problem was the amphetamines. He ruined himself with that stuff (and who knows what else?). My youngest brother did meth and he ruined his life too.
Find what style of training works for you and stick with until you get "bored" and then switch to something else for a while. I believed that but keep in mind I have a low IQ and was easily misled. ;D I spent a LOT of money on desiccated liver tablets, more than I could afford to. I waited for a long time for my order of "Weider Weight Gain 10,000!" to come in and then my older sister and brother explained to me that it nothing more than really expensive Ovaltine with more sugar in it. Dumb me.
When Robby Robinson told me the truth about steroids it opened my eyes. I knew I could never be a Mr. America or anything else with a "Mr." in front of it because I was scared to take stuff like that. I threw away a HUGE pile of magazines and did my best to go to school and work toward getting better and better jobs.

When I was a young skinny teen as opposed to now being an old skinny man,my training partner Ray Harris and I made the transition from training in our cellars and set up headquarters at the Springfield YMCA....there were not many gyms at all back then unless you went to a heath club with leopard spotted naugahide covered benches and chrome nonsense.....the calf machine went up to 100 whopping pounds so it was the "Y" for us.
It was a hardcote gym mostly populated by powerlifters and I later became a powerlifter in the minute weight class of 123 actually weighing 126 pounds......I could do a touch and go bench at 123 with 230 pounds at the time.
I weighed less than the 98 pound weakling in Jr. High and when I left high school I was a whopping 105 after training if you want to call it that, for 2 years......me and Harris followed Arnold and Sergios routines.
Needless to say I gained jackshit but I was very strong for a little guy while on the other side of the coin,Harris was getting huge.....he could have been a Sergio clone and I`m not exaggerating..... but I digress.
Another guy who we saw there was the great Dave Mastorakis who returned my call from last night and is calling me tomorrow as his wife and he had to stock up on wine and food as a major winter storm is heading their way.
Anyway,we were so shy we were scared to approach Dave just being the kids thst we wre.
Dave was fuckinh huge and thick and had to tie a tape weight to the globular dumbells just to enable himself to train heavy enough.
As a tiny powerlifter I always had the best official powerlifting bench in the 132 pound class in every meet I entered. but only weighed 126 pounds......I was too fucking dumb to figure out that if I missed a meal I would weigh 123 of less and even do better.
Our mentor became a guy named John Pezzotte. who had an official 515 bench,650 squat,and 650 deadlift in 1974 or 1975...Carl Snitkin trained there also Google him.....800 pound official squats.....John showed us how to perform the 3 lifts and said he was gonna` start a powerlifting team which we joined and did OK at .....I also entered odd lift contests at the famous Mt. Park Amusement Center put on by the great Ed Jubinville.
Anyway again.....fast forward one day me and Harris were at the mall and saw Dave and both Mentzer brothers.....we followed them at a distance just amazed at their sheer size.
Fast forward to around 2000 -2001....Dave had long been gone to California to become on of the first personal trainers......training such clientele as Jane Fonda and Leonard Nimoy just to name 2 of many.
Well anyway at our gym,and I hadnt ever truly gotten to know Dave but his training partner Ken Knapp knew me and Harris so Dave knew who I was.....Glen Chabot was going to try to bench 650 for a triple that night and the lower floor of the gym was packed.....glen was a pretty good friend of mine but I scanned the crowd and lo and behold I spotted Dave Mass.....well fuck Chabot though I did see his 650 for a triple like a hot knife through butter, but the bulk of the evening was me talking to Dave who miraculously remembered me.....we talked about what he was doing and had done out in Cali ,the Mentzers who were a lifetime friends with Dave and often times training partner,the late Gene Massey who I had the pleasure of seeing
before his tragic plane crash,a Prime Srnold and Franco,Len Archambault,Leon Brown,Don Moddzelewski,Katz, Pete Caputo,Elliot Gilchrist,Skip Robinson,Warren Fredericks,Pat Hayes,Joe Ugolik,The Mentzers,and a host of others.....this was where my famous movie debut was filmed for Pumping Iron.....LOL ;D.......Mountain Park,Ed Jubinville and Leon Brown and Katz another local heroes and the first time I saw the asshole Louie.
On that night I finally, after decade of knowing but not knowing Dave, forged a lasting friendship to this day....a great guy who got robbed a lot and I`ve seen his old photos as I modeled his shirts and clothing line "Lords Of Disciple" with my then training partner another little freak named Greg Robbins.
If you search the board and type in "Golds Gym how it really was" or something like that....,not that I ever trained there.....another long story you will find a lot of stuff on how hard we trained like freaks and my best friend Ray Harris who was a teen prodigy and lots of funny shit.

People bought into it and when they got NO results he just blamed over training still. And then reduced workouts even more. ANYTHING to keep from admitting he was wrong. DEAD wrong. On paper it sounds great. Blast a muscle with one hard set give it time to rest and eat ( oh he forget to say take steroids) and boom you grow. BUT life doesnt work that way. The human body was NOT made for that type of intensity, IN fact NO creature was. Do you know what happens when a cheatah runs after his meal and doesnt get it? I believe he can try one more time but if he still doesnt get food he will die! Because his energy expenditure is so great he cant recover!! HMMM sounds ALOT like Mentzers bullshit "HIT" doesnt it. Also he claimed making strength gains was proof it worked. SMH. As anyone knows when you first start lifting you increase weight and or reps pretty easily for a short period because you are LEARNING how to lift it better. Does NOT mean you actually got stronger.

Despite 50 years of the theory, HIT theory has failed to produce the promised results. HIT was tried by almost every gym rat in the 70s-80s because, lets face it, who doesn't want the same or better results with less time in the gym? Only problem is..it didn't work well for people.
Look at how the modern bodybuilders who are winning contests train...is it like HIT? or...higher volume? HVT only exists as an ex post facto..meaning, no ones goal is to train "high volume". That is simply what the optimal routine looks like for most people after the routine is planned out. I don't know one person who says "I'm going to do high volume just because..."
Effective routines just happen to look like "HVT" when all is said and done. Volume rules.

Look at how the modern bodybuilders who are winning contests train...is it like HIT? or...higher volume? HVT only exists as an ex post facto..meaning, no ones goal is to train "high volume". That is simply what the optimal routine looks like for most people after the routine is planned out. I don't know one person who says "I'm going to do high volume just because..."
Effective routines just happen to look like "HVT" when all is said and done. Volume rules.

Bodybuilding scores are rankings, having a perfect score means some judges agrees you were the best bodybuilder at that show, not that your physique is perfect. If someone that placed 2nd to 6th at the Olympia turned up at some no name backwater pro show, they'd be more or less guaranteed to get a perfect score. If someone is unanimously agreed to have the best physique in the novice category at an amateur show, they will get a perfect score. That doesn't mean 2nd to 6th at the Olympia or a random amateur has a better a physique than a Mr Olympia that won without a perfect score, it means means they were unanimously agreed to be the best at a less competitive show. And methzer didn't receive a perfect score at the 79 Olympia, he received a perfect score in the heavyweight division of the 79 Olympia, meaning some judges merely agreed he was the best heavyweight not the best overall bodybuilder. So there.

He took Arthur Jones info, refined it and was shunned for this but in the end, there's no doubt all things considered and equal Heavy Duty Training or HIT is the optimum training protocol for muscle growth. Note I said OPTIMUM.
I'm very glad he exposed the IFBB's and Arnold's corruption. And it's totally understandable why he walked away. Exposed the ads in the mags and their fake promises and lies. In the reasons all end in greed as the reason as always.
If Mentzer's training was the prevailing protocol and brief and infrequent trips were the norm, there'd be alot less hours spent in gyms and much more results and quicker assuming
nutrition was adequate for training and rest of 4-7 days after a session. Genetic potential would be reached faster and 75% of the supplement industry wouldn't exist.
Mike was one of a kind and his contributions will reverberate for a long time.

Years ago I did the Arnold "Education of a Bodybuilder" routine. Lots of sets, 5 per exercise kind of thing. I went from 160 pounds at 5'9" to about 200 pounds in 4-5 years- and then it stopped. I think I literally hit my genetic natural limit. No extra sets made a difference- and I was lifting heavy. I tried all sorts of variations to no avail. So I eventually just decided to maintain what I had- and that is where HIT came in.
Doing just one set per exercise twice a week (I may add a light warmup set or two if i feel the need but just for the first exercise) I lift to maintain strength. I think that is the most you can expect from HIT. I do mostly dumbbell exercises, and I am not very strong, but doing just one set just short of failure I am happy with the results. My bodyweight has stayed in the low 200's for years now.
For the record, I currently do just one set of 8-12 reps of movements like dumbbell rows (110-120 pounds), dumbbell flat bench (80-90's), dumbbell presses (70-75's), shrugs, etc. etc. Good enough to feel strong- just nothing out of the ordinary. My workouts take 15-20 minutes.
I can see doing this routine forever- like I said it has worked perfectly for maintenance of strength and body weight.

Ha! I remember an article from M&F way back in 90 or 91 that outlined a "Mass Routine" I remember the article featured pictures of Sergio Oliva and Lou Ferrigno. It was a 3 or 4 day split and outlined dozens and dozens of sets and reps of every kind of exercise for each body part.
I think I was a senior in high school at the time. I did that routine for months on end at first getting stronger and more cut, then getting tired and burned out! My cortisol spikes just thinking of that routine!!

So I eventually just decided to maintain what I had- and that is where HIT came in.
Doing just one set per exercise twice a week (I may add a light warmup set or two if i feel the need but just for the first exercise) I lift to maintain strength. I think that is the most you can expect from HIT. I do mostly dumbbell exercises, and I am not very strong, but doing just one set just short of failure I am happy with the results. My bodyweight has stayed in the low 200's for years now.
For the record, I currently do just one set of 8-12 reps of movements like dumbbell rows (110-120 pounds), dumbbell flat bench (80-90's), dumbbell presses (70-75's), shrugs, etc. etc. Good enough to feel strong- just nothing out of the ordinary. My workouts take 15-20 minutes.
I can see doing this routine forever- like I said it has worked perfectly for maintenance of strength and body weight."

Is Franco saying that Mike Mentzer would do one set of 25-50 reps? And that was his main set?
Or was Franco witnessing Mike’s warm-up before his all out heavy set?

Circa 1996-1998, there was a memorable statement in Musclemag International. It was stated that there was a study that indicated that steroid users who were NOT training actually gained more muscle than natural, hard training weight lifters.

I can barely understand what Cormier is saying. Milos's voice is so annoying he sounds like something is pressing down on his tongue all the time. Plus with every thing he says you don't know if it's something genuine or he's trying to run a scam :D

You need to look at what the study concluded. It never said anything about "looking like a bodybuilder," whatever that means. It proved that those who use steroids and didn't train at all gained more muscle than those who trained with weights naturally. Those who trained and used steroids gained the most muscle.

i know about that study and last winter/spring i didn't train but took test for like 4 months and i lost muscle and gained fat
only gained a few pounds of scale weight but bodyfat went from 6% to 13-14%

Nope. They gain bloat. It's not muscle unless they train.
