Protein bars & Children
« on: December 19, 2008, 08:36:48 AM »
My son is 2 and he loves to steal bites of my protein bar.  I know that the protein they eat before age 5 goes a long way in dictating how tall he gets as an adult, so protein is very important.  He's a picky eater, but he loves protein bars, and he loves to sip my whey protein.

is this dangerous?  he only gets maybe 5-10 bites per day, just a few nibbles each time I have one.  It's not that much different from a cookie, right?  Any input would be appreciated - thanks!

I would say it depends on what's in them but a little shouldn't hurt him (especially with all the other shit foods out there). If it's high in Sugar Alcohols I wouldn't give them to him - just because it could really upset his stomach.

No, not dangerous. Just not ideal. Protein bars have whey protein which is rich in Trypophan and use lecithin as an emulcifier, and these two compounds are arguably the most important brain-building compounds there are, being two of the three most important raw materials for nervous tissue with the third being fat. No wonder mother's milk protein is roughly 10% Tryptophan by weight. At the age of 2, your child's brain is still forming and eating lots of Tryptophan rich foods might enable him to have higher intelligence as an adult than he otherwise would. Or maybe not. In any case, it won't hurt him.
