I wouldn't say that was universal - social media can be quite exhausting, particularly when you're growing it.  It also requires an obsessive level of maintenance and content creation.   

It depends on the industry you're going into.  I know someone with over 200K follower instagram made about a year ago which is growing 1k+ per day.  It wasn't a huge amount of trouble for him to grow his, but if the market is saturated already it can be quite difficult.  A lot of persistence is required, early on and that generally destroys most attempts to rise up.

I agree with you on the whole, but a lot of it is about being in the right place at the right time.

One of my wife's closest friends moved to Dubai and has gained something like 60k followers extremely quickly from marketing her looks and connections on instagram. She works and is very driven, but acknowledges that social media looks after itself in a perpetual fashion once you do the groundwork. She works in the fashion industry but now does some TV presenting also due to her being "scouted" thanks to instagram etc.
