Interesting that it only has one meaning today, which is to describe certain events in Europe that occurred during WWII involving one group of people, despite millions of people dying due to the war itself, disease, starvation, etc.

The thing about the Nazi pogrom compared to the other casualties of World War II is this:

The attempted extermination of all Jews in Europe was an industrial enterprise.  They took raw data compiled by Fritz Haber (German chemist and developer of gaseous rodenticides) and scaled it up to design the industrial complexes used to kill Jews/Gypsies/others on an industrial scale.  The principals of the European Holocaust studied the Ford Motor Company in setting up the enterprise.  (A Ford executive said that when Henry heard the sentence, “They were killing people the way Ford makes cars.” he lost the will to live.)

The dehumanization was so complete, the perpetrators thought of it in terms of units of production cycled through a process.
