free hand squats alone will cause growth to a point but eventually you will have to do one-legged squats or add weight if you want more growth. I used to do free hand squats but did a pre-exhaust superset with leg extensions and this worked good.If you´re going for a toned look with some muscle it might be all you need. sometimes i have done free-hand lunges at the end of my leg workout.

I do front squats with twice my bodyweight for reps and my legs are "toned" and somewhat muscular, for sure not big.
For really big legs you need to have either very good genes or take tons of drugs, just like with everything else. Most people are delusional thinking their legs are "toned and muscular" when 100m runners got bigger legs than them...

Funny how some guys think as soon as you use weight you will look like a monster..lol The legs are very,very powerful and robust. I know guys into athletics who squat fairly heavy too.

Yeah, I weight around 80-82kg right now and I will diet down to 75kg soon. My back squat is around 180kg, soon to be 190kg, deep. Legs are kinda OK but nothing to write home about. The only thing that is somewhat "big" or noteworthy about my physique is my back which has nothing to do with training, it just happened.

Depends more on the rep range, I had bigger legs off lighter weight for sets of 15 to 20 than I get now from sets of 5

another truth on the matter is, if people would consistenlty go to the gym over years and eat well, theyd grow anyway.
most people already fail at the first requirement, and lets not even mention their dietary habbits.

When Wilf Sylvester won the short man Mr.Universe he was doing 400 body weight squats along with leg extensions and leg curls. I think he was from England.

Training regular was one of the reasons i got my own equipment as i was working shifts...and worst of all Nights. saved traveling and i did short hard workouts.

i do heavy and hi rep burn squats ,,,different foot positions ,,and sometimes superset leg press with squats or vice versa with lunges,,

think pretty big but functional legs are good to have for physique balance and in the gym because there are so many movements and angles to hit them from,,plus they take a lot of effort due to the strenght factor.see people do some extensions and leg curls ..couple set holding the knees pushing leg presses then saying o man what a leg workout lol,,,

my quads in "shape". far bigger now, but im fat and bloated so they dont look like much. 140x5 front squats, bodyweight around 73kg here.
shitty camera hides all the cuts and veins which were all over them, but still... nothing extraordinary.

I must say it's pretty funny tho when I can work out with 180cm tall, 100kg lean guy with 70cm legs and use same weights basicly...

i could never squat much or front squat much weight yet my legs really shaped up when i ran or did the stair stepper at the gym. my legs are tuned for reps not weight

You cant get big legs from bodyweight movements.
You can have proportional, cut and strong legs from bodyweight squats, lunges, high rep calf raises and sprints.
I work out at home and the maximum weight I have is 3 plates per side. I used to do 50+ rep breathing squat sets with 3 plates but now I can't be bothered anymore lol (when I realised the bb.com stuff about squats increasing test were bullshit). I just do sprints and 200 bw squats once a week. I still do stiff leg deadlifts on back day though.
Since stopping heavy weight squats I have found nothing but positives. Yes my quads have got smaller but my legs are still 'toned', more flexible and my ass has gotten smaller.
Don't judge, I do it for the hoes not the bros.
