Univision says it is dropping the Miss USA pageant and cutting all business ties with Donald Trump over comments he made about Mexican immigrants.

NEW YORK -- Univision is dropping the Miss USA pageant and says it will cut all business ties with Donald Trump in a spiraling controversy over comments the Republican presidential candidate made recently about Mexican immigrants.

The company said Thursday it would pull the plug on its Spanish-language coverage of the pageant July 12 by its UniMas network. It also has severed its business relationship with the Miss Universe Organization, which produces the Miss USA pageant, due to what it called "insulting remarks about Mexican immigrants" by Trump, a part owner of Miss Universe.

During his presidential campaign kickoff speech last week, Trump accused Latino immigrants of bringing drugs, crime and rapists to the U.S. He called for building a wall along the southern border of the U.S.

In an interview Thursday, Trump said his criticism was directed against U.S. policymakers, not the Mexican people or government, adding that Univision would be defaulting on its contract if it doesn't air the pageant and he would take legal action.

"At Univision, we see firsthand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country," said the New York-based Univision Communications Inc.

Donald Trump: I'm Suing Univision for Hundreds Of Millions Over Miss USA

Donald Trump has a vision for Univision ... it involves a courtroom, a jury and a bank account that will be bled dry.

Trump tells TMZ, he will sue Univision for "hundreds of millions of dollars" for breaching what he says is a binding, 5 year deal to air the Miss USA pageant.

The Donald says Univision had no legal right to back out of the deal Thursday, based on his comments about Mexico and Mexicans, saying many of them who come here are drug dealers and rapists.

Trump tells us, the contract, which was signed in January of this year, is iron-clad. He also says Univision became immediately apologetic after pulling the plug, telling him they were backed against a wall and pleading with him not to talk about Mexico anymore or to at least soften his view.

The candidate says, "I love the Mexican people, but I'm running for President and our country comes first."

And, as for Cristian de la Fuente, the "Devious Maids" star who says he's backing out of hosting the pageant, Trump tells us, "We never even signed the guy. After the Miss USA people saw him they were unimpressed."

Univision President Likens Donald Trump to Murderer Dylann Roof

Just days before Univision announced it would host a Republican debate, one of its top executives likened a Republican candidate to alleged mass murderer Dylann Storm Roof.

Alberto Ciurana, Univision’s president of programming and content, made a post on his official Instagram account last week that appeared to indicate that there were similarities between Trump and Roof, who last week killed nine people in a shooting at a church in Charleston, S.C.

The since-deleted Instagram post received hundreds of likes from Ciurana’s 116,000 followers on the site. It also received backlash.

“With all due respect, what happened last night is not a joke,” commented Patty Rodriguez, senior producer of radio show On Air with Ryan Seacrest. “This is very irresponsible of you.”

Michael Cohen, special counsel to Trump, called Ciurana’s post “totally insensitive” and said that Ciurana should resign.

“There are no words to describe despicable and horrific decision to place Mr. Trump beside this racist murderer,” said Cohen. “It was a totally insensitive act and I would call for his immediate resignation from Univision.”

A spokesman for Univision did not respond to an inquiry asking whether the network agrees with the comparison.

Univision announced Thursday it would be cutting ties with the Miss Universe Organization because it is partially owned by Trump. Ciurana posted the reasoning for the network’s decision, using his Twitter account to say Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants were the cause for the decision.
