I thought it was pretty good. I watched it earlier today. It was the first marx brothers film I've seen. I doubt I would call it a classic, but i did think it was just a fun feel good movie. I prefer Charlie Chaplin's films from that era, which I plan on re-watching City Lights this weekend.

yeah, i'll have to give it another try sometime. i say classic because it's considered amongst their best, if not the best by marx brothers fans.

i'm not anti 'old' films. my laurel and hardy box set is the prize of my dvd collection. comedy geniuses with few equals.

chaplin films used to make me cry when i was a kid  :'(

The Roommate (2011) - if you've seen 'single white female', then don't bother with this inferior ripoff.

yep, it's more or less a scene for scene remake. and a piss poor one at that.

on the plus side though.. the girls are pretty. but not pretty enough to stave off my growing boredom at this film.

m,y daughter thought it was great though. kids eh!  ::)

Try "It's a Gift",...W. C. Fields...
As far as "Duck Soup"goes,...some people can't get their heads around Groucho and Chico's "wordplay"...

Laurel and Hardy's "That's My Wife" is their best two reeler,  and there exists a "score" recorded during that time period that enhances the enjoyment greatly.

The Unnamable (1988) - the blood begins to run when a couple of frat prats take two college babes to a haunted house in the hope of getting lucky and getting in their panties. the idea being that they'll be so scared they'll 'put out'.

well, it at least worked for one of them, and we get to see her lovely boobies in the most unlikely of places. you've gotta love 80s horror with its gratuitous nudity  ;)

the monster looks good and is pretty creepy. we just don't get to see enough of her.

Ghoulies (1985) - first time i've seen this in a long time. and it holds up very well. well almost!! the green contacts used in his eyes, had the pupils pointing in all directions from scene to scene.. lol

That 'walking casually away from an explosion without looking back' scene had been entirely way overdone in every action movie of the last five years.

Every time I see it on the big screen I merely laugh and slap my head.

I've blown up (C-4) a few man made objects of various types in an effort to prevent the bad guys from reaching the good guys and have never had the opportunity to walk away from 'mass destruction' without seeking adequate cover or running as far and as fast as my ass would allow.

And once the debris settled down a bit, it's impossible to let safety measures overcome your curiosity or stiffel an attempt to see if it was a job well done or otherwise.

Anyone got a list of all the movies that included that fantasy scene? And in which movie was that scene first used?

Man Made Monster (1941) - mad scientist, lionel atwill, uses lon chaney jr. in his wicked experiments to create an electrical monster that only he can control. his ultimate aim is to create a race of electrical supermen... like you do !!

dead silence - effectively spooky
snakes on a plane - great fun. don't understand the negative criticism with this film.

Abbie Cornish was hot beyond belief in that :P

Sucker Punch was a lot better than the similarly themed Scott Pilgrim vs The World, IMO.

Scott Pilgrim was OK, but the Asian chick was annoying and while the CGI was as good, Sucker Punch's was better. Half the reason I like Sucker Punch more is because of the girls, esp. Abbie Cornish and Emily Browning.

Brandon Routh looked pretty jacked in Scott Pilgrim.

Saw Captain America two nights ago - liked it being in 3D - was an ok film and is left open for the next one in more modern times.

Twisted Nightmare (1982/released 1987) - god, this was fucking bad, even by the low standards of some of the shittier slasher films from the glorious 80s.

briefly, cos i can't be arsed.. a group of old high school friends reunite at a holiday cabin where the last time they were all together there, the retard brother of one of the girls burns to death in the barn for no apparent reason. yeah, like that's a good place for a reunion and a really shitty party  ::)

oh, yeah ! the camp is built on a cursed, ancient indian burial ground.. like they always are  ::)

to cut a shit story short.. the dead brother (summoned by his rather tasty sister) comes back to kill all the friends in ways you can hardly see on screen.. fuck it, it was shit.. AVOID!!!

even the tits couldn't save this mess  :-X

actually, it brought back rather vivid memories of pot luck nature of renting horror videos in the 80s/90s. they'd draw you in with a great video case cover.. so you'd check out the picture, then look at the back, read the vague description, see a picture of some decent gore, a monster and some tits... sold ! rush home to watch what woukld usually turn out to be a pile of shit..  :'( ah, the good old days  :P

Nightmare City (1980) - more than decent euro horror featuring a plague of infected zombie type creature. only these bastards are intelligent and can fucking run instead of that useless shuffle of the dead.

i liked pretty cool synthesizer music that came on when the creatures were fucking shit up.

also pretty cool how not one female, including doctors and surgeons, felt the need to wear a bra. so we got plenty of tits flopping everywhere. plus the zombies liked to tear oopen their female victims clothes to stab them in the chest or in one case, slice half her tit off and drink her blood from her gushing wound  :P

Very interesting low budget movie "The Man From Earth" (2007)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683/

"An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years."

The entire movie takes place in 1 room, very interesting dialogue filled with historical references. A man describes how he walked the earth as a caveman and never ages. A room full of scholars attempt to debunk his theory but and slowly drawn into his fantastical story.

Inception 8/10

Loved it. Nowhere near as complex a lot of people were describing. I guess people don't want to engage their brain at all during the movies.

Planet Terror/Death Proof
7/10

Planet Terror was the better of the two. Very fun and some hilarious one liners.

"Cube" 1,2 and 3 7/10

Low budget but very engaging. Solid Sci fi mystery with very tense set pieces. Sequels are "decent"

Powder Blue (2009) 6/10

Four Los Angelenos -- a mortician, an ex-con, a suicidal ex-priest, and a stripper -- are brought together on Christmas Eve by a mixture of circumstances.

Similar to Will Smith's "Seven Pounds" or "Magnolia", with multiple character stories crossing paths. Very ambitious with a strong cast but a little ham fisted in its message. Definately flew under the radar so it's worth checking out (Jessica Biel plays a pole dancer, the scenes are epic-think Salma Hayek in Dusk Till Dawn")

Magnolia 10/10

One of my favourites. Epic in every sense, great acting, music, crazy story. Long but worth it.

Paris, Texas 7/10

Slow moving but memorable with a great slide-guitar soundtrack.

The Vampire Bat (1933) - a village is in the grips opf terror as a spate of unexplained  deaths is blamed on vampire bats, or worse, human vampires.

suspicion soon turns to village simpleton, herman (dwight frye who played fritz in frankenstein), on account of his apparent like of bats and that he looks so well fed and healthy despite not having a job or begging for food/money.

poor herman is hounded to his death and yet the deaths keep on occurring.

anyway, turns out that all along it wasn't vampire bats, vampires or poor herman responsible for all the deaths... but the very well respected dr. otto von niemann (the legendsry , lionel atwill). who has managed to create life in his laboratory (a rather sad looking, pulsating bath sponge  ;D) that must be sustained by human blood. human blood collected from murdered villagers and made to look like vampirism is alive and well giving cover to the evil dr. and his diabolical experiment in creating life...

as cheesy as these films can sometimes be.. they're always thoroughly entertaining  :)

Timber Falls (2007) - psycho hillbillies kidnap a couple who are hiking in the wilderness, force them to marry so they can conceive a child in wedlock and without sin..  :o

of course the couple aren't too keen on all this so they have to be brutally tortured to, well, help them see sense..

this is a pretty solid film, despite the wacky plot and unintentional humour.

and the lead actress is pretty hot and we gbet some brief glimpses of her knockers  :P

a good 6/10

Creature (2011) - sleazy, b-movie, monster fun with nudity, gore , more nudity and gore as some brainless chick goes skinny dipping in a louisiana swamp,  ::) a paper thin plot, sid haig, and the beautiful serinda swan . oh, and a black, ex marine who fucks up more people than the actual monster  8)

Red State (2011) - very good with an especially good, nay, excellent, performance from michael parks playing the minister and leader of a westboro type, christian fundamentalist group of queer hating nutters. only this group takes its hate one step further from picketing dead gays funerals.. they kidnap and blow their fucking brains out during church service..  :o

john goodman comes in as the atf agent leading the 'waco' style siege on their compound.. which is awesome as plenty of bullets fly in a massive firefight and bodies from both sides hit the deck. i must say the the film seems to go in a different direction from this point, and there's a whacky kind of twist at the end that had me saying 'fuck me'.. vague, but i don't wanna spoil anything for you guys..

a quality 7/10 from me  8)

How many movies do you average a week, Brad? I'm anywhere between 4-10.

I just watched Agora. Good cast, acting, dialogue and action. Hopefully it's Rachel Weisz's bum that I saw and not a stunt double's :P

sadly. not so many. maybe up to 4 or 5 a week..

agora has been in my 'to watch' pile forever.. which means it'll probably never get watched, lol..

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) - an overlong, hideous and confusing mess. i swear, i had virtually no clue just what the fuck was going on, on the screen at any one time. the chinese fella  ??? john malkovich  ??? ??? ??? the russian bar  ::)

and then there was what i considered to be a couple of distasteful scenes.. first was one of the robot efforts calling his mate a wanker  ::) and then the scene with shia spitting in that blokes face  :-\  and i swear i heard the f-bomb ? c'mon.. its a kids film ffs !

on the plus side, old pervert bay certainly likes the camera to oggle the on screen crumpet. so no complaints from me there  8)  and it was pretty cool to see buzz aldrin  :)

overall it was shite to be quite honest  :-\

Drive (2011) - this washed from my memory the filth of transformers 3 quite nicely  :)

10/10 , loved it  8)

stylistic, violent crime drama. you'll be hooked after the brilliant opening scene.

gosling is fantastic as the man of few words stuntman and getaway driver.

carey mulligan is incredibly beautiful as the love interest :)

and a great 80s (ish) soundtrack that works very well with the tone of the film.

Super 8: Borrows bits and pieces from movies like ET, The Crazies and Cloverfield, but nicely paced, has likeable characters, impressive CGI and action scenes. The CGI isn't overdone and though the movie slows down a bit in the middle, it's still a good watch. 7.5/10.

Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990) comedy/horror anthology. i like anthologies because if one segment is a bit crappy, you know it's not gonna last to long. no such problems with this though. the first story involving a 3000 year old mummy, was the best of the bunch. the rest were enjoyable enough though.

some of the cgi was brilliant. especially caesars facial expressions and mannerisms. look forward to the sequel which i will definitely see on the big screen. i wager that, that evil looking chimp is gonna be a right bastard in the sequel .

john lithgow's performance as a alzheimer sufferer was especially good and quite emotional.

Mystic River (2003)

Directed by Clint Eastwood and featuring very powerful acting from Sean Penn, Tim Robbins and Kevin Bacon.
Absolutely love this mystery/tragedy thriller. 8/10

Stir Of Echoes (1999)

One of the only movies I've been able to take Kevin Bacon seriously as a true actor. A horror/supernatural thriller. An easy watch with a nice twist. 6.5/10

Lantana (2001)

Australian movie starring Anthony LaPaglia. A no frills, low key drama. Heavily engrossing character study centering around 5 couples with secrets, lies, temptation and lust. Everyday believable characters and situations, some people complain of a relatively thin plot and the lack of a grand finale, but this really is an exploration of normal people making mistakes. Love it or hate it. 7.5/10

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

Tims Robbins stars as a Vietnam vet whose grip on reality is tested by a series of horrific hallucinations and visions. Pretty wild movie with a message of hope and a fantastic ending. 7.5/10

Killer Elite: Top notch action flick with Jason Statham, Clive Owen and a minor role for Robert DeNiro. One of the best action movies of the year with an excellent pace and good storyline. Was better than Drive, IMO. 7/10

Cowboys and Aliens: Another good action Sci-fi with Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Lots of actions, very good CGI and decent plot. Better than most of the recent alien movies like Skyline and Battle LA. 7/10

Panic Button: Low budget but very nicely done English movie that's like a cross between Saw and The Social Network. Could be this year's "Cube". Fast paced, decent acting and a scary/creepy ending. 6/10

Tough crowd here ^, I liked C & A for all the action.

Centurion: Action flick that's very similar to the underrated The Eagle - a group of Roman soldiers lead by Michael Fassbender get caught behind enemy lines and have to run/evade a group of Picts lead by Olga Kurylenko, whose tracker character is a tough, angry, mute bitch. Good camera work and fast paced, albeit a bit stretched out. MF is great as always and the final action scene was intense and very nicely done. 6.5/10

Paranormal Activity 2: Liked this one a bit more than the first and also the way they tied the story with the first one. While the first one was all about the atmosphere, this one relies more on cheaper techniques like jump scares and night vision camera a la Quarantine. Katie's tits were just as awesome as in the first :P 6/10

Rat Race: Comedy flick with a whole bunch of funny actors from Mr Bean to Whoopi Goldberg. Some hilarious scenes, most notably Jon Lovitz's Hitler speech in a WWII veterans meeting (see below) 5.5/10

Fright Night (2011) - excellent.

The Thing (2011) - not bad at all. nice monster effects with decent enough acting. i did think that it seriously lacked in tension and paranoia unlike carpenters masterpiece. still, it was never boring and was very good in some respects.

The Hangover Part II (2011) - awesome but not quite as brilliantly funny as the first film. i really hope that they bring us a third movie in this series. all these guys together are just fantastic together and i love the fact that these films are made for adults.

Conan the Barbarian (2011) - i fell asleep watching this. not because of the film itself, i was just knackered and knew really not to put it on, but i still did. anyroad, from what i saw of it. the action/fighting scenes seemed well done and were enjoyable enough. the bits in between seemed pretty , meh!

Suspiria (1977) - visually stunning, scary or riveting it's not. still always an enjoyable watch though.

there's at least a couple more, but i'll be fucked if i can remember what films they were, never mind how good or not there are  :-\

Colombiana (2011)

Mix the revenge aspects of "Kill Bill" with the breakneck speed of "Taken", remove the style and tension and your left with this average revenge "Kickass chick" flick. Zoe Saldana of "Star Trek" fame kicks all sorts of ass as a 100lb trained killer, looking to avenge the deaths of her parents at the hands of Colombian Gangsters.

Some cool and inventive action sequences just about save this utterly unbelievable and formulaic action movie. The human drama, love sotry and character building subplots are laughably cliche.

Couldn't recommend it, but it is watchable. The female lead is cute but a little too slender to provide any real eye candy.

5.5/10

Swimming with Sharks (1994)

This one completely flew under the radar. Kevin Spacey plays the boss from hell, a monstrous movie mogul who hires a naive assistant and proceeds to make his life hell. Of course, the tables are eventually turned...

I've always been a little critical of Spacey for playing similar roles, the dry sarcastic mannerisms and speech seen in American beauty are in full force here. He is fantastic though and this movie, although low budget and fairly low key is enjoyable and funny. Very easy to watch.

6.5/10

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story (1993)

Jason Scott Lee brilliantly portrays Bruce Lee's humble beginnings and rise to movie stardom. Absolutely love this film. Seen it a dozen times. Great soundtrack. I can't see how anyone could dislike this.

7.5/10

Minority Report (2002)

Underrated IMO. One of my favorite Sci-Fi flicks, Tom Cruise is great, high tension throughout. thought provoking story line (an interesting, often frightening glimpse into the future). We need more big budget movies of this quality hitting the cinemas nowadays.

8/10

Happy Hell Night (1992) - looked promising after the opening scenes. the demon priest looked creepy as hell , and it looked like we were in for a gorefest of frat prats getting fucked up bad. after a overlong story setup it just seemed to plod on and the actual gore was very tame. what a waste of a demonic priest  ::)

The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011) - sordid, disgusting, brutal, disturbing and hilarious. in other words, it was great  :D martin, a sweaty little toad of a man, and man of no words! is totally obsessed with the 'human centipede' movie. so much so that he goes about kidnapping people and keeping them in his lockup until he has enough bodies to for his very own centipede.

martin is more ambitious with his creation, as he has plans for a twelve person centipede.

watch in horror as this tub of shit hacks up his victims with kitchen knifes, pliers, bolt cutters and a hammer. anesthesia comes by the way of a whack over the head with a crowbar. whilst duct tape and staples are used to join people mouth to anus  :o

just wait until he wants them to feed each other !  :o 8)

sadly, the copy i saw was the butchered uk version. only the aussies had a chance of seeing this totally uncut. though i believe that they've changed their minds on that and have now banned this film  ::)

worth a watch at least just to say you've seen it. 6/10

I'm in my early 20's and have no interest in seeing it. There is always a curiosity aspect with films like this and "A Serbian Film". I know what to expect and doubt I will gain anything from watching it...
I think most people are better off not seeing it. I used to think this stuff was cool. Now it just seems nasty.

BTW anyone want any specific movies reviewing? Things that are out on dvd. Not currently in the cinema.

It's freezing winter here, so I'm watching more films than ever.

You're wise beyond your years and I'm not being sarcastic. I used to watch a lot of these over the top gore/horror flicks in my 20s, just for the shock factor and see how much they could push the limits of what can be shown, but got over it after a few years. Haven't even seen most of the Saw or Hostel sequels. Movies like A Serbian Film hold no interest for me anymore.

Batman: Year One An origin film that follows the parallel stories of Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon during their first year of arrival in Gotham City. Fast paced, lots of great action, good script and above all, excellent animation style. Only better Batman animation I've seen is Under the Red Hood. Could've been a bit longer since it looked a bit rushed towards the end esp. with the Catwoman sub plot, but very good overall. Decent voice acting also. 8/10

Burning Bright Straight to DVD horror/thriller movie about a young woman and her autistic little brother who get trapped inside a house with a hungry tiger. Decent plot, acting and unique premise. The tiger used was real, not CGI, and there are some really tense moments. Definitely watchable and doesn't look cheap for a low-budget, STV movie. 6/10

Fright Night Very good by itself if you can forget that it's a remake. Good cast, some funny scenes and a couple of jump scares, fast paced (after the first 20 mins or so) and decent CGI. I liked it just as much as the original. 7.5/10

Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow Marvel animation movie about the children of the Avengers, who set out to destroy the enemy that killed their parents. They get help from a couple of the original Avengers and have the same powers as their parents. The movie is probably targeted more for kids than adults, but a couple of minor points aside, is entertaining, fast-paced and has lots of good action scenes. 7/10

Final Destination 5 (2011) - despite this been the 5th film of the series. it really is pretty damn good. we enjoyed it thoroughly. the initial disaster premonition on the bridge was fantastic, and for me, is the best of the disaster scenes of all the rest of the films so far. the twist ending was great too. 7/10

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (2010) - i like the original, 1973, very creepy made for tv movie. and i really liked this remake. it stays more or less true to the original except for changing the main protagonist from a woman, to a young disturbed girl. it works very well too.

there's a few great jump scares. one in particular had us all nearly crashing through the ceiling  :o effects are pretty good too.

on a side note! fans of the aussie soap, neighbours. will have a little smile to yourselfs as 'jim' and 'mike' are reunited back on screen  :P

The Possessed (TV 1977) - typical well acted and well made, 70s made fro tv horror. a dead priest who has lost his faith is sent back down to battle the forces of evil. he finds himself at an all girls boarding school where the evil makes people and objects, spontaneously combust.  ther's also a love triangle between the hot milf headmistress, her sexy young niece who is also a pupil at the school. and a pretty young harrison ford.

the demon fighter skulks around the place, looking mysterious, asking questions whilst waiting for his chance to confront the demon. which duly happens when the demon possesses the headmistress.

a rather tame confrontation between the two happens by the swimming pool and evil is defeated and our hero disappears without a trace.

its certainly no exorcist but for a tv movie it was pretty decent.

Maniac Cop 3: Badge of Silence (1993) - didn't expect much from this, the 3rd film in the series. but it was as good, if not slightly better than the second film.

the film starts of immediately from where the previous film finished. maniac cop is resurrected from the dead by a voodoo priest. meanwhile, a female cop responds to a drug store robbery and is shot and badly injured . this is being filmed by a pair of unscrupulous 'journalist', who, in a bid to get more money from the news networks, only release part of what they have filmed. the part that makes it look like she shot an hostage in cold blood.

did i mention that the lady cop is nicknamed 'maniac kate'? well she is on account that she uses hollow point bullets and uzis  8)

anyway, she's in a coma and maniac cop goes on the rampage killing cops, city officials, doctors, surgeons, ambulance men and the bad guy news hacks.

he takes maniac kate to the voodoo priest in order for him to bring her back and perform a voodoo wedding between the two.  ;D

the climax is really excellent and worth watching the whole film for.

the thing i forgot to mention with all three films is the really excellent stunt work. it really is first rate old school real life stunts performed by stunt men and women. non of that cgi shit  8)

Dracula: Prince of Darkness (1966) - quite possibly my favourite of all the hammer dracula films. lee is menacing as hisses and snarls through his role as the fearsome count. however, he is very nearly outdone in the sinister stakes by his excellently evil man servant, klove. plus a great support cast helps make this a hammer classic. a must watch for horror fans

the bloke was likeable, the little lasses were very good , and the mother was gorgeous. two or three good jump scenes but the film itself was just 'meh'. it's not even like blank video tapes were all that cheap in the 80s  :-\

Blastfighter (1984) - the less you try work out what's actually happening in this , bava directed, italian action film. the more you'll enjoy it.

an ex cop, just released from prison for killing his wife's murderer. is inexplicably given a state of the art, all bells and whistles machine gun to try out. he returns to his backwoods home where he accidentally uncovers a poaching operation run by a shady chink. who he promptly gives a kicking. this turns the army of poachers against him. an army led by his old mates brother who had his leg crushed by our hero when the were younger.

its only after the murder of his daughter (belive me, her out of the blue appearence is one of the most confusing aspects of this film. though she does have great tits flopping freely under her white t-shirt  :P) that our hero gets to use his awesome weapon.

its first blood, southern comfort and deliverance all ripped off into one film  8)

It Came from Beneath the Sea (1955) - a giant, radioactive sea monster wreaks havoc with the navy's latest nuclear sub. sailors, fishing boats, coastal towns and even a family on a trip to the beach are not safe from the beast from the depths in search of food.

soon it brings its terror to the city. and people find that even the iconic golden gate bridge is no barrier from this hideous monster. our hero's must find a way to stop this beast before it's to late. and whilst they're at it... find some time for a little romance !!

Take Shelter (2011) - a man plagued by visions of an impending apocalyptic storm sets about, at all cost, building a shelter for his family. whilst at the same time, must try and face up to his fear of his possible mental illness inherited from his mother. a tad overlong but otherwise thoroughly good  8)

Dream House (2011) - both me and our lass enjoyed this, despite it not being what i thought it was gonna be. thw twist was a complete surprise and where the movie peaked for me. it was still decent after that point but i think it would have worked better if they left it until near the end.

Madman (1982) - cheesy dialogue witrh some even cheesier acting, as a mad axeman pickes off , one by one, the teenage workers at a camp for gifted youngsters.

Remember that one from when i was a kid, scared the shit outta me.
Watched it recently and its a horrible movie, none stop suspense with no outcome. MadMan Marz is a pretty scary character though.

DRIVE .... A great movie even though I didn't like the ending and was a bit confused by the long delay between the delivery of the lines spoken between the two principal actors.

AND I think that the get-a-way driving scene was one of the best car chase scenes I've ever seen on a silver screen.

This is one movie (DRIVE) I intent to place in my Great Films Collection.

NEW MOVIE ... CHRONICLES. A great independent feature about 3 high school friends who become 'super-heros' and how they each handle it. I place this one as one of the better films I've seen within the past 365 days.

HATED .... Cornelius.

JUST OK ..... Man on a Ledge.

LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING:
Chimpanzee
Battleship
John Carter of Mars
Batman ------

Crawlspace (1986) - kinski is fantastically creepy and weird as the landlord of an apartment building where he spends his time crawling around the air vents spying on, then killing, his tenants .

When a Stranger Calls (1979) - very good 70s thriller about a psycho who terrorises a young babysitter with creepy phone calls.

Frankenstein (1931) - fucking brilliant  8)

Ladrones de tumbas (Grave Robbers)(1990) - a mexican horror that is really quite good. a devil worshiping, catholic monk is caught during the act of ritually fucking a virgin in order to spawn satans son. as he is put to death he curses taht he'll be back to fuck a virgin to bring forth the antichrist.

a few hundred years later some teenage grave robbers accidentally fall into his crypt. they find the treasure they were looking for but also resurrect the evil monk when they pull an axe from his corpse. all hell is let loose as he goes about wasting people.

its cheesy as fuck but still pretty good. the only downside is having to listen to these people talk spanish! each sentence is is blurted out with hardly a pause for breath or a gap between each word..

The Devil Bat (1940) - bella hams it up to great effect in this low budget b-movie horror. he easily outshines a cast that is, quite frankly, not good enough to lick his shoes.

bella sends out his devil bat (a super bat he has made by running electricity through its body) to attack and kill whoever is wearing a particular scent that bella has produced especially for this task. his targets are the two families that have become rich from bella's products. bella is pissed that they are rich from his hard work. so he plots and develops these bats in his secret lab.

his plan seems to be working too as more people die. that is until a pesky reporter sticks his nose in and rumbles bella and his dastardly plans.

gotta love, bella  8)

I had to break it into 2 parts... beginning and end.

It wasn't really that good to be honest.

The visual effects were cool, but they would have been better served putting the "mind scenes" into one stand alone movie without all of the "mental hospital stuff".

The Awakening (2011) - not full of cgi spookies and tons of jump scares. although there's one or two good ones. no, it's a really solid, good old fashioned ghost story/mystery.

there is a twist in the story that was pretty unnecessary i thought. but it doesn't take much away from a pretty solid film.

Beyond the Door aka The Devil Within Her (1974) - more surreal than scary. still a good watch with some disturbing scenes. the dolls with glowing eyes was creepy, and her vomiting bile was stomach churning  :-X

Saw "The Raid: Redemption" on Saturday. Fucking awesome movie. The fight scenes were amazing. Some were a little long but damn if it wasn't entertaining. Great soundtrack, too. Really made the fights.
Saw it on Wednesday. The fights were the best thing about the movie, and its weakness. At the halfway mark, I was knocked out by the fight stuff, and action. Some real jaw-dropping, and even funny stuff. The second half of the movie saw the penny drop, and I was just watching, or waiting for, the next overly-choreographed confrontation. Nearing the end of the movie, I was hoping someone would bring the building down on everyone.

Stir of Echoes (1999) - liked this. sagged a bit in the final 1/3 but picked up again for the last bit.

Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995) - good !

Gone (2012) - if your idea of a great movie is having the absolutely beautiful amanda seyfried get 95% screen time of a 90 odd minute film... then this is a 10/10  :)

if you actually want to be gripped in an exciting, hard to predict thriller, then this movie is a 3/10  :-X

although i get the feeling that this will appeal more to women as our lass thought it was great  ::)

i just enjoyed seyfried   ;)

Battleship (2012) - tried to be to clever for it's own good with the whole 'whose really the bad guy' thing. i wanted the aliens to win anyhow. a turd, tbh, but with some great action scenes.

ATM (2012) - i was bored before the 'action' even got started. ¾'s of the way through had me wanting to punch myself in the face for not turning it off. i was punching myself in the face at the finish  :'(  i pity anyone that actually paid money for this utter shit. worst film i've watched in a long time.

Grave Encounters (2011) - stood up well to a second viewing. it's a (intentionally) pretty funny film actually i thought. the cgi ghost were a bit of a let down though. they use a real person then do that silly twisted ghost face effect over the top. doesn't look so good and not scary at all.

anyway, there's a remake in the works. hoping that will be as good.

Piranha 3DD (2012) - even with zero expectations of this it still stunk - terrible!

[REC]³ Génesis (2012) - this was very good for a movie that's third in the series. slightly humourous and with a romantic twist (features newly weds and guest, on their wedding day), you'll probably like it if you like the previous two films.

and the lead actress was quite beautiful too as well as a bad ass

the cabin in the woods - zero scares in this 'horror' farce.  :-\

the being - entertaining 80s scifi cheese starring martin landau. his performance is oscar worthy compared to the rest of the cast

and soon the darkness - utter shite

run bitch run - lots of boobs and gore in this 'i spit on your grave' esque, rape revenge exploitation piece. i liked it mostly and its got a rather good soundtrack too!

he knows you're alone - excellent early 80s slasher that unashamedly rips off carpenters legendary 'halloween'. it's also notable for being tom hanks' big screen debut.

the octagon - i found some of the plot confusing at times  :-[ but found hilarity in the use of a shadowy voice-over effect that was meant to be norris' inner ninja voice.  8)

sunset boulevard - classic with a brilliant, ott performance from gloria swanson

a force of one - narcotic cops enlist the help of a karate expert (norris) to train them in self defence after two of their fellow officers are killed by a karate man after they are betrayed by a bent cop. it gets personal for norris after his son is murdered by the bad guys and so chuck unleashes his fury upon their asses. there's a sweet scene when norris fucks up a pimp!

code of silence - the body count is high in this excellent cop action flick starring chuck norris and a very good cast including dennis farina (crime story), and henry silva.

the omega man - chuck heston battles mutant vampire cult, 'the family' whilst battling to find a cure to the virus that wiped out most of mankind. if only 'i am legend' was only a ¼ as good and as entertaining as this is

black gunn - so-so blaxploitation starring the legendary jim brown

lone wolf mcquade - norris, carradine, a bond girl and a bond-esque wheelchair bound, dwarf villain complete with getaway revolving wall.  8)

carradine was great and really should have had more screen time. bond girl, barbara carrera (never say never again), did all her scenes not wearing a bra, so we are treat to seeing her tits through various degrees of see through clothing throughout the film. all in all a great, fun action flick with plenty of cheese, though i'm still slightly baffled as to what the dwarf bad guy point in this film was.

chopping mall - security robots malfunction and go on a killing spree in a shopping mall. ludicrous 80s fun and barbara cramptons tits as an added bonus.

the asylum tapes - more found footage nonsense set in an abandoned insane asylum. the actual location was superb and creepy as fuck. the film itself was a complete dud despite one or two creepy moments. this was infact directed by oliver stones son, sean stone. and also features stone senior at the beginning of the film.

apartment 143 - pretty good horror film

the tall man - a twist reveals a truly absurd premise for this crap starring jessica biel.

lovely molly - i liked this quite a bit. had some pretty creepy moments. the lead character is pretty and is nude quite a few times. infact there's one hell of a great love scene in it.

Just watched a few interesting films last night. I tried to watch "The Artist", but it bored the heck out of me, ...kept dozing off, ..not a good thing when you've got a silent film with subtitles going, so I quickly shut it off.

Saw "The Iron Lady." 2011 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1007029/)  starring 2 of my all time favourite character actors Meryl Streep & Jim Broadbent

All I can say is Wow!! I found both women to be simply amazing.
Politics aside, you can't help but to find new found respect for Margaret Thatcher.

Trailer - Iron Lady

Beyond The Trailer - Review of Iron Lady

Also saw the 2012 BBC Documentary - Margaret Thatcher - The Iron Lady which was mainly news correspondents discussing their experiences with Mrs. Thatcher, and providing their own analysies & perspectives, interspersed with archival footage from the time.

Also saw "The Joneses" 2009 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1285309/) starring Demi Moore & David Duchovney.

Loved it. It was a bit of a mind-f**k, but great movie nonetheless, ...and not a bad gig.  :P

Plot: The Joneses are rich, beautiful and seem to be the perfect family. There's only one slight problem. When it comes to the truth as to why they're living in that upscale community, all is not necessarily what it appears to be.

The Joneses - trailer

What can I say... I just stocked up on about 153 titles that I've wanted to see, but somehow never quite got around to... including 4 seasons of Dr. Who  :D

total recall - the action scenes were fucking great. the effects looked fantastic. well, apart from the lens flare that is. beckinsale kicked ass like a good 'un and biel looked great too. oh!i liked the blade runner-esque look to the city and the nods th the original and those robot things looked awesome. however, the plot was paper thin and i wasn't exactly sure what was going on at times  :-[ and there wasn't much of any character development unlike in the original.

three boobed girl, though pointless, was gorgeous...

the amazing spider-man - i liked it. dunno if it was any better than raimi's effort, but garfield as spiderman sure as hell is a lot better than maguire. same with emma stone being way better (and hotter) in her role than dunst.

willie dynamite - average blaxploitation starring that bald chap from sesame st. the pimp costumes were great, not that that made up for the sever lack of female nudity, but it helped.

chernobyl diaries - not as absolutely terrible as reviews suggest.

wrong turn 5 - well it was certainly much better than wt4. dunno if that's saying much though.

dark shadows - pfifer looked beautiful, as did helena bonham carter. sadly i was bored shitless through most of this 'comedy' that barely raised a few chuckles. burton is done! hard to believe it's the same man that gave us the magnificent , 'ed wood' and ' edward scissor hands'

when the lights went out - british 'supposedly based on a true story' supernatural horror set in the 70s. complete and utter rubbish.

the thing - carpenters brilliant film looking even better on blu. the practical effects in this 80s masterpiece totally blows the shite cgi effects of the 2011 prequel well and truly out of the water!!

ted - fucking brilliant! the 'flash gordon' scene is pant pissingly awesome :8

the apparition - set your expectations at absolute rock bottom.... then leave them there!

Most recently, I watched a biographical movie about the man who was the inspiration for the Robert Redford movie, The Horse Whisperer, Buck Brannaman. He is an amazing man who came from very unfortunate circumstances. As a boy, Buck and his brother were severely abused by their father who was an alcoholic. The abuse became even more unbearable after their mother died. Somehow, as if risen from the ashes, Buck has done amazing and wonderful things with training horses and is a loving and caring family man as well. Just goes to show that we aren't destined to carry on a family culture of abuse.

Didn't like it as a Batman film.

It was almost completely untrue to the Batman mythology in regards to what Bane is / was along with more than a few other things.

It was a pretty good Superhero film, but it should never have had "Batman" in it.

Last night I watched a documentary titled 'The Queen of Versailles' which is about David Seigel, owner of Westgate Resorts, allegedly the largest time-share company in the world and his wife Jackie. The film chronicles their indulgent lives following the crash of 2008 when David's earning power was impacted. They were building the largest home in the U.S. in Florida which is modeled after Versailles in France. Their monster house has 90,000 square feet. Construction, which was halted for several years, resumed in 2011 after the filming of this documentary. Apparently, David's financial status has improved.

In the recent Presidential election, David Seigel was among those who informed his 60,000 employees that should Obama be reelected, there would be massive layoffs. This didn't happen of course. In fact, Seigel has managed an average 5% salary increase for his employees.

If you want to see how some of the 1% live, watch this film. It may astonish you as it did me. These aren't happy people. They are simply rich people who have lost every concept of what a good life really means. Unfortunately, so have their children, it would seem.

silent night - i kept nodding off during this santa slasher movie. sadly, the bits i did manage to see, leave me with no desire to try and watch it all again.

Pandorum (2009) 3.5/5

Solid Sci-fi, Horror Alien Rip-off with Dennis Quaid

The Giant Mechanical Man (2012) 4/5

Ligtweight Romantic comedy with subtle humor. Very easy to watch. Currently on Netflix

DeadGirl (2008) 3/5

Slow paced Horror/Thriller with a creepy story.

I Saw the Devil
(2010) 3.5/5

Korean revenge movie similiar to Oldboy. Over the top gore.A little too long.

Human Centipede 2
  (2011)  0/5

Incredibly slow paced, shot in black and white. Not an ounce of suspense. Awfully bad. Even the gore sucked.

Shaun of the Dead
(2004) 4.5/5

Hilarious. Leagues above Zombieland and other average "Zomcoms"

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007) 4/5

Solid family/Crime Drama with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke.

Brooklyn's Finest (2009) 3.5/5

From the director of Training Day. Intertwining stories of cops and criminals. Good but not great.

Hobo with a Shotgun
(2011) 4/5

"Nu-Grindhouse/Exploitation. Loved it. Great dialogue, stupid fun with some good gore.

Saw the remake of Oldboy in Ottawa, 2 weeks ago. Not bad, but not anywhere as cool as the original. Josh Brolin was fine as the protagonist but lacked the true incentive for revenge. The Korean guy just brought it. Oh, and the hammer scene that was so awesome in the original just failed this time. Spike? No donut. And, the ending was just as lacking as the Korean one. 7/10

fantastic..DiCaprio is one the greats of our time

Read some not so flattering reviews of this film. Also, why is it 3 hours long?
Title: Re: what was the last film(s) you watched?
Post by: Primemuscle on January 10, 2014, 03:36:50 PM
You can read negative reviews of ANY movie. By and large, I think the reviews have been very positive. It's got 8.7 stars out of 10 on IMDB right now. That's very high.

The 3 hours go by fast. The movie is great and my guess is that Leo DiCaprio is getting an Oscar nomination for his performance as Jordan Belfort.

You are right, there is always a critic with a bad review. The critic writing the review I read did a good job explaining why they thought the movie wasn't great. That doesn't mean their opinion is correct or that others wouldn't have a different opinion. It is, after all just one critic's view and as you've pointed out, other critics might feel differently.

Fantastic film.  Sean Penn = Great actor

Watched Captain Phillips last week ~ VERY INTENSE.  Tom Hanks = Great actor

Saw American Hustle this week   :-\ really  ???
There's nothing uniquely American about the hustle or the characters, and there's nothing profound embedded in the film's plot. It's a fun caper with good performances by the whole cast ~ good, not great, not Academy Award-worthy. Overrated.

Looking forward to seeing Lone Survivor and 12 Years a Slave soon.

PIECES (1982) - a thoroughly entertaining, but totally batshit crazy italian slasher film. it starts with a young lad axing his mother to death and then cutting her to pieces with a saw after she destroys the jigsaw puzzle he was putting together. the police, along with a nosy neighbour soon come along, and our lad craftily blags his way out of being fingered for offing his dear ol' ma.

fast forward some years and there's a spate of gruesome murders on a university campus somewhere in boston where the (sexy female) victims are being attacked by a chainsaw wielding psycho who is apparently chopping off and keeping various body parts for which we later find out is for a rather macabre human jigsaw puzzle.

enter the clueless police, who in their increasing desperation to catch the killer, enlist the help of a male student to do their detective work for them. he's partnered with a female cop who is working undercover as the tennis coach (she's fucking useless at tennis  ;D).

oh, and then there's the utterly bizarre kung fu scene that just comes the fuck out of nowhere and leaves you wondering, 'why did that happen?'.

anyway, there's sex, nudity, and gore aplenty with great special effects in this odd but fun film.

EDGE OF TOMORROW (2014) - GROUNDHOG DAY meets THE MATRIX meets STARSHIP TROOPERS in this highly entertaining, scifi blockbuster, starring tom cruise (who is awesome btw), as an unwilling recruit sent to the front to fight some alien force that has attacked and conquered most of europe. hopelessly out of his depth in battle, the inevitable soon happens that results in a rather strange twist of fate for cruise. i won't say anymore for risking spoilers.

great action, some very funny laugh out loud moments, and of course, bill paxton 8) oh, and emily blunt was kickass too even though she's fugly.

8/10

THE MALIBU BIKINI SHOP (1986) - the last time i watched this on video, i spent most of the film hoping that my erection would go unnoticed ;D fortunately, or maybe unfortunately. i had no such worries this time.

a little dated but was still surprisingly fun to watch. 6/10

i swear, nobody does cheese and feel good quite like the 80s did 8)

Had no idea Stanley Kubrick grew up in New York. Thought for sure he was a lifelong Brit.

CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS (1953) - the city is chicago. we get to peek at the underbelly of the city for one night only. we follow an honest but jaded cop who's ready to throw it all in for a nightclub dame and a chance to follow his dream. only things don't pan out as expected when he is partnered for the night by a police officer he's never seen before.

IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE meets noir. 7/10

The Howling Reborn. This movie fucking sucked. All the greatness of the original The Howling was not present at all. Instead it seemed like they tried turning it into some sort of Twilight-esque bullshit. Do not recommend at all.

The Legend of Hercules. Another dud. The guy they picked out to be Hercules just has no acting ability. As you can tell, as he seems to portray Hercules as if he had downs syndrome. Also, his strength in the movie is inconsistent at best. Sometimes being able to pull superhuman feats and others seemingly being weaker than a normal human. I don't recommend at all.

Dallas Buyers Club. Awesome flick!! Wasn't a fan of Matthew McConaughey at all, until I saw this movie. I couldn't help but wonder where was this guy's acting ability before? Because he stepped up his game and knocked this role right out of the park. Highly recommended!!

The Stonehearst Asylum. Don't think it hit theaters yet, but saw it today On Demand. Very well done, hoping Brad Anderson is back on his game again (Session 9, The Machinist, Transsiberian, then some duds). Has a Shutter Island feel with a few jarring twists, but the story, far as I can tell, is uniquely its own. Highly recommended.

Also finishing up Child of God, a Cormac McCarthy book adapted by James Franco. Just arrived on Netflix and seems pretty faithful to the novel. Dark and twisted, as one would expect from the author, but a must-see for a McCarthy fans.

Has anyone seen a psychological thriller (maybe horror) called Triangle? Heard good things, so I got that and Martyrs on deck. Don't recall being overwhelmed by the latter, but talk here lately has me wanting to give it a second try.

Kingsman secret service...I don't understand why the movie previews are so cliche and look bad IMO but the movie was literally incredible and extremely violent (which i enjoy) great performances by Colin Firth and Samuel L Jackson who plays a nerdy genius who tries to take over the world and loves mcdonalds tries to install a chip inside everyones head by giving everyone free wifi and click a button so everyone starts killing eachother for population control meanwhile this boy is being trained and goes through a CRAZY TRAINING circuit where he could die in every single one and competing against other kids summoned across the world to be kingsmen and alot happens along the way to both parties but it's really an amazing movie i thought it was much better than american sniper... Kingsman 9.8/10

Just watched the movie "hits"
Was really good! Had some actors I find funny, the kid from arrested development (Micheal Cena?) was in it.

There's a guy I think who is related to Navy Mike in this flick, has a front lawn that could use some attention, lol...

Had some good laughs, highly recommended. You guys will laugh at the group of hipsters who come to the guys aid. I think we briefly see the crazy lady from that movie where they're in a train for all of eternity.

Check it out!

Deathstalker (1983) - i thought that the male lead bore an uncanny resemblance to mike o'hearne (his hair :-[). you may also recognise the blonde (lana clarkson) who was shot to death by phil spector. who, btw, has her tits out for most of this film.

anyway, despite its obvious tiny budget and rubbish acting. this is a fun little sword and sorcery flick that just whizzes by. chiefly becuase its chock full of tits and ass with even a mud wrestling match thrown in for good measure. thank you, roger!
