The Santos Curse continues...
« on: August 16, 2023, 12:10:37 PM »
Let's see how fast Kevin "I Need Every Vote I Can Get" McCarthy deals with this.

Santos is just proving to be a Mini-Me version of Trumpy.  Liar, conman, thief, getting indicted, and his aides too.

Feds Indict George Santos Campaign Aide Over Shady Fundraising Tactics
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=Feds+Indict+George+Santos+Campaign+Aide+Over+Shady+Fundraising+Tactics

A campaign fundraiser for indicted Rep. George Santos (R-NY) has himself been indicted on four federal felony counts stemming from emails and phone calls in which he allegedly impersonated a high-ranking aide to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Samuel Miele, who worked for Santos during the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, is facing four counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday.

McCarthy and his chief of staff, Dan Meyer, are not cited by name in the indictment, but it was widely reported earlier this year that Miele had masqueraded as Meyer when contacting donors. Miele was reportedly fired after the allegations became public.

“Mr. Miele is not guilty of these charges,” his attorney, Kevin Marino, told The Daily Beast in an email on Wednesday. “He looks forward to complete vindication at trial as soon as possible.”

The feds say Miele posed as Meyer while communicating with more than a dozen potential donors during the last half of 2021. He did this “falsely and without authorization,” to raise money for Santos—and a 15 percent commission for himself, the indictment says. Miele made phone calls as Meyer, and sent emails from an account set up in Meyer’s name, according to the indictment. The funds were then deposited into Santos’ campaign account, after which Miele got his cut, the indictment states.

Prosecutors say Miele copped to the scheme in a letter to Santos last September, admitting to “faking my identity to a big donor.” However, Miele pointed out, there was “high risk, high reward in everything I do.”

Obviously you have to have indictments to qualify for the GOP these days.

He was that before Santos came around...  now he's got to protect that slim margin at all costs.  Weakest Speaker ever.  Scared of his own shadow.

Democrat calls McCarthy ‘pathetic and shameful’ for protecting Santos after aide charged
https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=Democrat+calls+McCarthy+%E2%80%98pathetic+and+shameful%E2%80%99+for+protecting+Santos+after+aide+charged

A senior Democrat called Kevin McCarthy “pathetic and shameful” on Wednesday, for continuing to protect George Santos even as a staffer to the fabulist Republican congressman faced charges for impersonating the House speaker’s own chief of staff.

Daniel Goldman of New York said: “According to a federal indictment, George Santos paid someone to impersonate Kevin McCarthy’s chief of staff to raise money, yet McCarthy continues to protect Santos.

“Pathetic and shameful.”

The indictment of Samuel Miele on four counts of wire fraud and one of aggravated identity theft was issued in the same New York court where in May Santos pleaded not guilty to charges including fraud, theft and money laundering, CNBC reported.

Miele did not immediately comment.

Santos was elected to his New York seat last November. He was soon found to have fabricated most of his résumé and to be under investigation in multiple jurisdictions for alleged misdeeds including campaign finance violations, dubious business schemes and sexual harassment.

McCarthy removed Santos from committee assignments but otherwise refused to move against a congressman who backed him through 15 votes for speaker, saying investigations should run their course.

In May, Republicans dodged a Democratic attempt to make Santos only the sixth member ever expelled from the House. Santos, who has admitted “embellishing” his résumé but denies wrongdoing, is running for re-election next year.

CNBC first reported Miele’s impersonation of a senior McCarthy staffer, saying he called “wealthy donors” during the 2020 and 2022 election cycles, identifying himself as Dan Meyer.

In that report, in January, CNBC said: “The impersonation of the top House Republican’s chief of staff adds to an emerging picture of a winning congressional campaign propelled by fabrications and questionable tactics.”

Since then, almost every aspect of Santos’s political career, even his real name, has been brought into question.

Republicans under McCarthy control the House by just five seats, making Santos’s seat a key target for Democrats.

Goldman, a former prosecutor and lead counsel to the first impeachment of Donald Trump, has worked with another New York Democrat, Ritchie Torres, to keep Santos in the spotlight.

In remarks on the House floor in June, Goldman told Republicans: “You are the party of George Santos.

“… The guy is an alleged and acknowledged liar and indicted, and you protect him every day … It’s pathetic, and it’s beneath you and it’s beneath this body.”

October is shaping up to be a great month for the Republicans appearing in court.

George Santos filed false campaign reports inflating his fundraising figures to garner national GOP support, prosecutors say
https://www.google.com/search?channel=ftrc&client=firefox-b-1-d&q=George+Santos+filed+false+campaign+reports+inflating+his+fundraising+figures+to+garner+national+GOP+support%2C+prosecutors+say

Republican Rep. George Santos of New York falsely inflated his campaign's fundraising figures in order to garner support from the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC), federal prosecutors said in a new filing on Thursday.

The new information emerged as the scandal-plagued congressman's treasurer, Nancy Marks, pled guilty to one felony count of conspiracy to defraud the United States.

Prosecutors allege in the new filing that Santos and Marks filed false campaign finance reports to the Federal Election Committee in the year before he was elected to Congress, including reporting a $500,000 loan in March 31 from Santos himself, which prosecutors say he "did not have the funds necessary to make."

There has been much speculation as to where Santos, who's faced numerous evictions, was able to garner the funds necessary to make roughly $700,000 in loans to his campaign. The filing suggests that at least one of those loans never took place.

Santos and Marks also falsely reported $53,200 in contributions from 10 different family members of Santos, according to prosecutors.

All of this, prosecutors say, was part of an attempt to qualify for the second phase of a program that provided "financial and logistical support" to Republican congressional candidates — apparently the "Young Guns" program run by the NRCC, House Republicans' primary campaign arm.

As the duo prepared to file a quarterly campaign finance filing on January 31, 2022, Santos told Marks in a text message that he was feeling "lost and desperate," according to the filing.

Santos ended up qualifying for the program the following month based on the false campaign finance reports.

Santos' lawyer, Joseph Murray, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment. His congressional office does not comment on legal matters.

Santos, who already faces 13 federal charges including money laundering, wire fraud, and theft of public funds, is set to appear in court again on October 27.

10 new charges.  Got to love the tough talk from him thought.
---
Santos, who is due in court on Oct. 27 on the new charges, told reporters outside the U.S. Capitol that he does not intend to resign from office or take a plea deal, vowing to prove his "innocence" while daring colleagues to expel him. “They can try to expel me, but I pity the fools that go ahead and do that and think that that's the smartest idea,” Santos said, according to Politico. “They're in tough elections next year, but they're setting precedent for the future.”
---

But only 23 felony charges?  Got a long way to go before reaching the level of his orange hero.

Yes they do.  McCarthy did.  Needed that vote of his.  Couldn't be bothered to pursue his crimes in depth.

You know the funny thing is that you and Santos have a lot of qualities in common.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with Santos or his fraudulent activities. I did not vote for Santos and would not have, had I lived in his NY district. Also there is the fact that he was the republican candidate and I am a democrat.

Sometimes your posts and reasoning are beyond dumb.

George Santos’s Campaign Is Broke

https://www.google.com/search?channel=ftrc&client=firefox-b-1-d&q=George+Santos%E2%80%99s+Campaign+Is+Broke

Indiscriminate lies, criminal charges, and intraparty calls to resign can’t seem to topple Representative

—but bankruptcy might.

Numerous donors to the political pariah’s campaign wanted their money back amid the Long Island Republican’s numerous scandals over the summer. New filings with the Federal Election Commission show a significant overdraft between July and September: negative $16,526.09. That consists of $17,200 in refunds, along with $674 in new donations.

Santos’s campaign has spent lavishly even though it has brought in almost no new donations. In those same months, the New York Republican’s campaign spent $42,000, leaving him with less than $23,000 in the bank by the end of September. The bulk of that spending went to the D.C.-based legal firm Dickinson Wright, which Santos owes another $70,000, reported Axios.

On top of that, Santos’s campaign treasurer seemingly “became aware” of more than $120,000 in previously undisclosed debts within the last three months owed to several aides and vendors, according to the filings.

Added to the $630,000 that Santos still owes himself thanks to a fake (and then suddenly real) 2022 campaign contribution, that leaves the congressmen more than $800,000 in the red.

On Tuesday, Santos was hit with a dozen charges related to stealing his donors’ identification and credit card information, allegedly wiring tens of thousands of dollars to his personal bank account while using the rest to jack up his campaign numbers.

“As alleged, Santos is charged with stealing people’s identities and making charges on his own donors’ credit cards without their authorization, lying to the FEC and, by extension, the public about the financial state of his campaign. Santos falsely inflated the campaign’s reported receipts with non-existent loans and contributions that were either fabricated or stolen,” said United States Attorney Breon Peace in a release announcing the indictment.

The congressman is due in federal court in Suffolk County on October 27.

George Santos' Latest Fib May Be The Congressman's Wildest One Yet

https://www.google.com/search?channel=ftrc&client=firefox-b-1-d&q=George+Santos%27+Latest+Fib+May+Be+The+Congressman%27s+Wildest+One+Yet%E2%80%8B

As if he hasn’t done enough to establish himself as untrustworthy,George Santos has somehow managed to add yet more fuel to his ever-raging fire by lying to a New York Times reporter about his five-year-old niece being kidnapped by two Chinese men.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Times reporter Grace Ashford published the story based on several phone conversations she’d shared with the congressmen after beginning her investigation into Santos alongside Times reporter Michael Gold after the fabulist was elected last November as a member of New York's House of Representatives.

Santos, nearly a year later, is on the hook for a whopping 23 federal charges, including money laundering, wire fraud, and theft of public funds — he is still in office as of this writing.

Ashford said that Santos called her for the first time in September and complained about the media “slandering” him and causing him and his husband to receive death threats before describing an incident “nobody talks about.” He then detailed a kidnapping involving his five-year-old niece saying surveillance footage showed her in the company of two Chinese men, which he cited was “retaliation” against his criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.

Santos also claimed said kidnapping was undergoing an active police investigation. You can guess what happened next. When Ashford dug a little deeper, it’s probably no surprise to anybody that the high-ranking police official she chatted with found no evidence of such a case.

“I’d lean into, ‘he made it up,’” the official told Ashford.

Santos stands firm in saying his negative media portrayal includes “factual and timeline errors” and that his team had “requested numerous corrections,” but the Times’ standards team found no such requests from anybody.

The congressman (again, he is still in office) has already pleaded not guilty to 13 federal charges in less than a year in office, and he’s set to be arraigned on another 10 at the end of the month.
