I'll diet, bring my BF down but for God's sake how can you lift light and still call it training? Why not just join a women's body pump class. Rant over.
-
Increase anabolics, lose weight and gain strength at the same time :D
-
Weight is not important it's the form what matters.

Nothing girlish about that rant. ::)

you can always run a few miles before lifting to make it harder

I can gain strength while losing. The point was I tried going back to isolating body parts (bodybuilding) and my numbers on my main lifts got destroyed in the last couple of months. Rep were higher, volume was higher, etc. Have to go back to powerlfting/strongman type training. This is ego killer. I'd rather deal with a couple of strains than be weak.
-
Leave your ego at the door you fat fuck.

Post of a fat man.....
-
Take almost all your carbs before the workout. Take protein plus some carbs afterwards. Suffer the rest of the time. Shut up too.
-
Even serious trainers should not lift heavy all the time. It's good to mix it up. The joints need a break once in a while too.
-

I'll drink beer, eat donuts and watch reruns of WSM on youtube until I heal. I'll start with 40oz kegs.

I dont get the whole heavy weight thing.Medium weight reps 12-20 works best For me.all heavy does is hurt.

Any pics so I can see what physique you are repelling to go back to strength training? (srs I haven't been on gb in months)

Coach, how's the sleep apnea been of late?
-
I have to agree, training light just isn't that fun or challenging for the most part. How someone even manages to make it to the gym knowing they will just be doing some light "arm" stuff is beyond me.
-
I would even be dumb enough to give you training advice, but can't you find a happy medium?
-
Training light does suck. I hate it. I love 6-8 rep training and it's what my system prefers for growth. If you use the 3-0-3 tempo, ya won't go super heavy but still use good weights, give your joints a rest and really works well for hypertrophy.
When I see guys doing that fast tempo cheat shit, I think of the stone ages are how much better they could be if they gave it a shot. (NOt that I think it's the best for everyone, but think there is a HUGE merit to trying it.)
Positive/helpful post of the day over.
-
Coach, how's the sleep apnea been of late?
It's subsided quite a bit. I've dropped about 15lbs so it's helped. But we're in the middle of negotiating a lease renewal so sleep sucks right now.
-
All that matters is how much you look like you can lift. Would you rather look like a twink who's strong or like Arnold and weak?
-

So a program like Gironda's 8x8 or 10x10 isn't training?

You have to be realistic here by setting one specific goal; getting back in shape or keeping those numbers high. Maybe you should take that ego less seriously..
-
It's not that difficult getting stronger while dropping fat. But it's a bitch getting more muscular while dropping fat. Naturally that is.
-
I would even be dumb enough to give you training advice, but can't you find a happy medium?
Yeah :-\
-

I can do both. I just have to change my training back to what it was.

I agree about the ego part. I know it's my ego even when I train by myself.

May as well look like this disgusting blob, but who cares, because hes strong :/

Sure, you can do both for a while, unless you want crazy conditioning where most guys end with painful joints.. So it all depends on what you exactly want. 10-12% bf is a good goal.
-
I'm more like simple Simon, light to medium weights 10 reps minimum. Fuck going heavy.
x2.
I think 8-12 is fine for weight training. Why go 2-3 reps or something? :-\

To play the devil's advocate what happens for many is your self image gets tied up in something like a big bench. You see yourself as better than the rest because of it. It doesn't matter that you have no gas in the tank and would tire running around a block or boxing one round. Instead of low rep pushing huge weights thinking you're impressing everyone in the gym when you go for muscular endurance pushing moderate weights it's hurts your ego. Sure you can raw bench 450lbs but you can't do 5 quick sets of 12 in the bench with 225 with a controlled cadence because you run out of gas on the third set. Besides you wouldn't be caught dead failing only using that.
Personally I remember being big and looking great going into first into boxing and then into jui jitsu thinking my big numbers in the gym would translate into fighting. First thing I did when I realized I had a zero gas tank was to get a pair of running shoes and like every boxer, MMA, wrestler guy I hit the pavement. Guys that have a 1200 horse power motor but a 2 gallon tank have nothing. Better to have a 600 horse power motor and a 20 gallon tank. An over simplification but you get my point.

lol at defending this guy because hes a powerlifter. lol haha.
Hes about two steps away from a heart attack, but who cares because he's strong lol.
At that point, he seriously needs to go on a diet. Totally unhealthy. Why would someone let themselves get this way? I do not have a ripped six-pack, however, I dont have 30% bodyfat either :/

lifting numbers don't matter.
the scale, the bodyfat %, the cholesterol, the blood pressure, those are the only numbers that matter now.
we're old, dude. looking big in a t-shirt or lifting as much as the youngin's.... no more time for that nonsense.
i want you around to debate on getbig for another 40 or 50 years man. GetLean!

Who are you to say lifting #s don't matter? Staying strong at an older age is just as important if not more so then when you're younger.

coach has looked kinda heavy in recent pics. if he's achieving epic leans but benching 10 pounds less, I'm happy for him.

Check out our 500# deadlifter @76 years old on the powerlifting board.

Some just aren't auited for the "bodybuilding" style training, I'm not knocking it and have seen it work phenomenally well for some but for me I just get smaller and weaker.
For me sets of 3 to 5 are best done with a controlled negative. Interestingly about ten years ago when first switching from higher reps to failure to alternating 3x5 and 3x3 on main exercises I actually made better gains (size and strength) than ever did with bodybuilding style training.

Yet this guy will out live 95% of bodybuilders competing at high levels. BTW, way to find the fattest PL pic you could. How about throwing up a pic of Dan Green?

What is light in this context? I rarely go under a 45 second TUL for upper body sets, 60 for lower and that's a lot better than spazzing for 10 seconds with a heavier weight IMO
Van b nailed it in the first answer, dieting means more drugs if you want to maintain strength.

That's not true. Changing your training modalities is what makes a program. Not drugs. If you're training volume 3-4 excercises per body part at 10-12 reps with :60 recovery you will lose strength drugs or not. Change the program to power based program (1-5 reps in the main lifts. Bench, squat, deadlift, etc with 2-4min of recovery) and strength goes up. Laymen I know but its a fact.

I don't understand the obsession of lifting heavy either. I like 10-15 rep range. I'd rather train for visible results rather than numbers.

You can do both. Why look strong if you aren't? Remember In the original Pumping Iron when Franco was telling the story about how was confronted and was told "it's all show, weak muscle"? (Paraphrasing) and he called the guy out?
-

x2. Who really gives a shit about being "strong."
I train for 2 reasons:
1) To maintain my health, in order to prevent any diseases or disorder that comes as I age. I want to stay as fit as possible as I get older.
2) To look decent naked.
Both can be accomplished without lifting heavy weights. In my opinion, I can accomplish the above 2 reasons without going balls-to-the-wall heavy, so I can get "strong." Plus, as long as you consistently train, youre going to be strong, compared to the average person. And as long as you can continue to make gains, and stay healthy and fit, no need to try and be "strong" in that sense. Unless youre a powerlifter or strongman, like chaos, who is an absolute beast, good looking, fit, smart, and strong. That is rare, most people are not all of those things combined. He is special.
-
Post of a weak man. I'll take fat over weak any day.
What are your goals? Are you more interested in how your Physquie looks or do you consider yourself a powerlifter??

It's possible to have both. You have to know how to train for it.

Errr.. you keep saying it's possible after starting that you can't take it anymore, so you've regrouped yourself?

Errr.. you keep saying it's possible after starting that you can't take it anymore, so you've regrouped yourself?
Huh? You know there's more than one way to train don't you?
-
People who down play strength are often times the ones who don't have it, training for strength requires very hard work which most aren't willing to do which is fine, but enough with the excuses and belittling, every man out there wants to be strong. If you could magically snap your fingers and increase your strength you would and you know it.
-
Huh? You know there's more than one way to train don't you?
There are def multiple ways to Rome, but you started about the mental part. Has this been solved or what?
-
Everyone I've talked to who used to lift really heavy tell me one thing, lift lighter because your joints will be shot later on. I'm taking their advice on this one.
-
Lots of jealousy over a happy, well built, successful, self-employed 50 year old
tea party member man in this thread.
-
You can do both. Why look strong if you aren't? Remember In the original Pumping Iron when Franco was telling the story about how was confronted and was told "it's all show, weak muscle"? (Paraphrasing) and he called the guy out?
I train with a guy that is obsessed with always lifting heavy and adding more and more weight. All that type of training has done for me is given me injuries. That's the biggest reason I avoid it. If I train heavy once in a while, it's for the goal of adding muscle, not an extra 50lbs on my bench.
"Why look strong if you aren't?" Well, that depends on how you define strong. Is there a magic number that you must be able to Bench or Squat that makes you strong? I'm not breaking world records but I'm strong enough for me :)
-
Training for strength and conditioning translates into other aspects for me - I can run faster, hit a golfball/softball further, and participate in various races/obstacle courses, etc.......
At least that's why I train that way over volume/bodybuilding styles. Plus, I have shitty muscle bellies for BB anyway.
