Yes, it helps to focus and still the mind, it helps to relax the muscles more while stretching, I can hold a position for 5 minutes like the seated forward bend and everything feels very loose, the stretch is very enjoyable, and with the release of tension in the body there is a corresponding release of tension in the mind. I have used it before weight training also, it is not a daily or even weekly thing.
And no it helps to align myself with reality not escape from it. Escaping from reality is what is called "being normal".
