Diving is part of the culture of the game. It's frowned upon by American fans because of our own "macho" sports culture and because we're bad at the sport and look for reasons to disparage it. In Europe (continental anyway) and South America diving is seen as shrewd / smart / helping your team win at all costs.

It is not because it's some rough-and-tumble endeavor where the players are sustaining tremendous blows like in hockey and American football

Is someone seriously arguing this?

I played rugby, way harsher injuries than 99% of sports but football is a cu nt for ankle injuries and getting taken out at full speed. My body is covered in scars and I've broken a lot of bones and torn a lot of tendons, ligaments and muscles but I know what hurts and a kick to the shin with the toes will have you limping for a while.

Not saying diving in football isn't farcical but if you had a clue (and eyes) Honduras were being filthy kicking the French players, hacking ankles and body checking them (doesn't hurt in football but stops you controlling ball).
