I worked with the RC while going through school also and it was my job to try to teach the Black kids in various San Francisco neighborhoods how to swim. I think we called it "Waterproofing' back then.
Years later in Nam I had a mission to do some river diving in Nam in an attempt to ascertain the number of "kills' that an artillery unit had made on a VC unit that was caught crossing a river.
To my surprise a number of divers assigned to the mission were black Marines with the ability to swim pretty damn well.
When I first saw these troops, I made a mental note to thank the Red Cross and the instructors as shown in your photo as soon as I got back stateside,
Be assured that the instructors as shown in your photo will be responsible for a good number of saved lives within the next 50+ years.
I can assure you of that .
