Title: any whisky drinkers?
Post by: visualizeperfection on February 20, 2014, 11:24:19 PM
I do drink in a very conservative manner. I have all but stopped drinking beer, and replaced it with having a whisky or two neat.

I have gone through a couple different brands this last few months, mostly scotch's and I have found Glenmorangie to my favorite.

With the much less expensive irish whisky, Jameson a close second.

what do you fellas recommend?

back when I drank, years ago, I'd drink makers mark when I went out... second choice was knob creek, jameson was third. doubles, straight up with water on the side.

(at home it was always stoli vodka.. because nobody can smell vodka, right? lol  ::) oh well, we all grow up sometime.)

i stopped drinking completely; depresses me.  staying and getting leaner is much easier when you don't drink; hormone-wise and calorie intake-wise.

knob is good.

vodka wreaks havoc on me the next day. ultimate dehydration even from 3 drinks.

I understand that. Im not a big drinker, but I do fancy one or two once or twice a week. I never get shitfaced though, I cant deal with hangovers anymore.

He would recommend something like -
Highland Park 12 yo for starters.

You might want to try Johnnie Walker Green, everyone seems to like it.

Glenmorangie Original 10 yo - #1 single malt in Scotland.

Most any 15 or older makes for a deep flavorful sip. That being said 15-25's start getting exponentially more spendy.
So for a semi - daily sip you would probably want to stay around say 50$ for a bottle, and there are quite a few very nice single malt bottles to be had for 50$ or less.

My top <50$ single malts:

5. Glenlivet 12 - solid, consistent, tasty and cheap.

4. Macallan 12 - deeper and higher quality feel than the livet 12 it has a more complex profile.

3. The Balvenie DoubleWood 12 yr - very nice bottle for 50$. quality speyside for the coin.

2. Glenfarclas 12 - serious flavor, spicy woody sherry casque flavor.

1. Highland Park 12 - my drink of choice for 50$ try it and you will see it is comparable to many brands' flagship 15 for 100$ or more.

I could do my list of 100$ and up bottles which I indulge in maybe 3 times per year. Mostly 18's.

Yes, I love Whiskey

Jack Daniels, Canadian Club, Glenlivet, Wild Turkey

Canadian Club and Ginger Ale is my go to drink.

Prefer bourbon over scotch

Bulleit is my current go-to, but Makers works too.  Jack, Knob Creek, Bookers, all good.

All time favorite is Eagle Rare 17, but now is up to over $100 bottle when it used to be $36.  Had Pappy once, but now it's almost impossible to get.

Just preference...listed a cheaper selection and a better one. Cheaper ones for mixing obviously.

Irish - Jameson, Red Breast

USA - Jim Beam Rye, Makers Mark

Scotch - Walker Black, The Macallan

Canadian - Canadian Mist or Club, Crown Royal.

Jameson and a high quality ginger ale, something like Hansens with cane sugar, and a squeeze of lime is a great drink.

i think its called an irish mule if im not mistaken.

the quality of the ginger ale is even more important than the booze i feel though.

ginger ale is the most under appreciated soda. obviously we dont drink sugar drinks often, but if i break down and want a soda its usally ginger ale.

I found the Glenlivet 18 to be worth the extra cost. Very smooth.

If you think Macallan 12 is harsh try some Laphroaig, haha.

I forgot about Bulleit as noted above. Good stuff.

Yeah, and you really can't get good ginger ale at most bars or restaurants. Irish Mule.... I didn't know that, cool

I like to have a double (or more, especially when I make it) shot of whiskey though.

Alot of Johnie Walker drinkers here. Johnie is good esp the green or blue but if I am going to spend that much on a drink it's not going top be a blended scotch. I'll take a good single barrel like Macallan 12 year.

Lately I have been drinking Lagavulin 16 year. Great taste. Laphroaig 12 year is awesome too. Alot of people find it too smokey. I love it. It tastes like a campfire.

For the 200$ you will pay for the blue it is very inferior to a vast number of other 200$ bottles.

For example the same 200$ could be spent on:

Balvenie Madeira Cask 17yr - which is utterly amazing.

Glenfarclas 25 - which is on a completely different level  than the massively overhyped Johnnie.

Hell for the price of Johnnie blue you could buy the Amazing Highland Park 18 AND The Macallan 17 both of which blow the blue out of the water.

There are worse whiskeys than blue but they cost $18 a bottle lol. I think the red should be given only passive aggressively as gifts to one's enemies rofl.

Tried Jim Beam Black recently and it was not bad. Makers Mark 46 is very good for the money. I like the smooth oak taste. I don't mind  Gentleman Jack for sipping. My favorite sippin' drink these days thought oddly is Don Julio 1942 Tequila. At $100 a pop I've been trying to find a similar taste for less money but coming up short.

Agreed.

If Im mixing it with diet coke, evan williams or jim beam hits the spot.

If im drinking it over the rocks it has to be jameson or bulleit....

Im not really into the more expensive shit.

Nice thread right here and wise words above.

Johnnie Walker, totally over-rated and over-priced.
Over here (Scotland, very handy for access to whisky) ~£130(~$210) for a bottle of Johnnie Walker blue label.  For ~£35 (~$50) I can get a bottle of 12 year old Royal Lochnagar single malt, the main constituent of Johnnie Walker Blue. It's a great, smooth whisky. And of course living where I do I can accompany it with an easily available cuban cigar. Punch seem to be my go to brand at the moment, though I usually have a few Montecristos in my arsenal too.

Some nice Balvenie single malts named on here, but the pick of them for me is the Balvenie Signature 12yo single malt.
Highland Parks are nice, but there's another distillery on the same Island called Scapa. Lovely malts, the 16 year old is a candidate for the best I've tasted.

I've got 9 or 10 bottles of single malt in my collection at the moment, think I might have to top a cork and have a dram or two.

The top three on my shelf at the moment...

Glendronach 15yo revival
Highland Park 12 yo
JW Blue label

I'm personally partial to the Glendronach, amazing flavor-loaded sherry bomb

How do you guys afford to buy $150 dollar bottles of booze? I buy premium once in awhile but it could never be my standard go to drink.

Although I mix it up in general I'm a rum guy. It must be my Hispanic blood. Maybe we need a premium rum thread.

No, the Sherry one is the only I've tried. It's not easy to find around here, although other ones are more common. I'd want to taste them before buying an entire bottle.

Rarely drink but when I do it's Vodka with no particular preference as long as it's on the rock s with a couple of olives.

Overalkl favorite drink is a Margarita but heavy on the Tequila.

Many years ago (about 12) I was responsible for making a huge jug of Margaritas for a military beachside get-together and in an attempt to be funny, I downloaded a full bag of Gummi-Bears into the concoction which went over exceptionally well and has been a favorite drink (Gummy Bear Margarita) whenever we gather together.

Now you can order Gummy Bear Margaritas in some of the top LV nightspots which will set you back about $14 each after the $20 to $40 cover charge.

The "Bodybuilding Gummy Bear Margarita'  comes with a splash of RED BULL which raises the price to $16 so I've bveen told.

I would feel like a homo ordering anything with the word gummy bear in it at a bar tbh.

in the privacy of my own home, yes. sounds really good lmao.

I hardly buy same whiskey twice, because I want to taste every one of them. Still, there is some I stash in by bar, because I have not find better to my taste. Like BenRiach 15 Year Old (Pedro Ximénez Sherry Finish) or Cask Strength Glengoyne Single Malt Scotch Whisky. Those are for sipping, and on the rocks I use Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon at the moment. In this price range you hardly find bad whiskey, so why not taste different ones. Glenmorangie is distillery, which makes dozen different whiskeys, but they are all very tasty. Why not buy all of them and try if you can taste the difference. If not, it is useless to spend money to expensive scotch  ;D

Just to add, I am member of the House of Johnie Walker (in Sydney) & they have testing sessions every month.
I would usually bring 3-4 gent's/ladies for little bit of fun, + they give away free bottles of Black 1.
No jerks & boozers at those events, very good place for meeting upper eshalon.
Don't forget to eat dry (non oily) fruit before testing or  :P

Johnie W. testing club could be in yours city too, so sniff around  ;)

Nice pick. Been a while.

The only Glenmorangie I've had is the stuff finished in sherry casks and I found it too flavored.

I read something about proposed tax hikes to fight alcoholism in Scotland, did that bullshit ever get off the groumd?

They introduced a minimum cost per unit of alcohol to try and remedy the problem big boozers aiming it at those drinking cheap shit by the bucketload. This was back in 2012 I think. Made beer a little dearer but no noticeable difference in the price of a good malt thankfully.

Most of the Glenmorangie's are nice and tasty but the Lasanta for me was vile. Heartburn in a bottle. My oesophagus is melting just thinking about it!

In my current collection:

Glengoyne 17
Caol Ila 18
Lagavulin 16
Laphroaig quater cask
Dalmore 15
Yamazaki 12
Glenlivet 12
Glenmorangie nectar d'or

I love the islay whiskys. Bang for buck, laphroaig quater cask is hard to beat. Most drinkable: Lagavulin. Best out of that bunch: Glengoyne 17.

Alcohol is poison.  It's also very expensive.  Give your liver and wallet a break.
