Title: Dogs Left in Cars
Post by: Princess L on May 30, 2007, 02:40:50 PM
I see it every year.  Usually, depending on the temperature, I leave a note (actually a copy of a Dear Abby article on the subject).  I have contacted the police and I've also talked directly to the owner ~ usually with less than a favorable response.  I saw it today and SHAME ON ME; I did nothing.  I waited and contemplated what to do.  After 3 minutes, the owner came out, with 6 BAGS OF GROCERIES  >:(.  That tells me, he was in there quite awhile.  I avoided the confrontation and I'm pissed at myself.  It will not happen again.

One of my friends is a local news anchor.  I just sent her this email.

Kxxxxx,

In case XXX hasn't put out the message this year, it would be nice to remind people not to leave their dogs in a car when out running errands and such.  I see this all the time.

I've contacted Xxxxxxx and Xxxxxx counties along with the Xxxxxx Police and they WILL respond to calls about dogs in cars (not sure what their course of action would be).  As I understand it, some departments/squads carry a wire thermometer to check the internal temperature and react accordingly, including breaking into the car.

I plan to get some flyers from The Animal Protection Institute to place on windshields - only if there's no danger - if there is, I will contact the police.

On a day like today (85*), with the window open, a car will reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes.  After 30 minutes, it can get up to 120!  This can cause irreparable brain damage or death.

Check out this campaign  http://www.mydogiscool.com

Please see what you can do to get the message out there.

Thanks,

Lxxxxxxx

It pisses me off when I see this.  Owners of animals that do this, can expect me to say something & I am not a nice "tempered" person by nature.

If I'm out with the dog, I stay in the car with the dog while errands are being run.  I have water (usually) with me & park underneath a shade tree.

Sometimes I think people are just too ignorant stupid.

I'm on a mission this year!  >:(

I just took my baby to the vet yesterday and I asked them if anyone had brought their dogs in for heat stroke and they said they had already seen two cases and neither of the dogs made it.  It doesnt take long at all for our loved ones to suffer in the summer heat.

The best way to cool a dog off is too apply cold compresses to their feet.  This will help them cool off faster.

Of course if you suspect your dog is suffering from heat stroke, get them to the vet immediately.

If you do need to travel with your pet in the summer you can freeze 2 liter bottles of water to place around them to help keep them cooler.

You can also look into something like a "cool mat" for them to lay on in the car (and use in the house, crate), and a cool collar (use it on walks!):

       http://www.futurepets.com/Cool_Mat_Dogs.htm (http://www.futurepets.com/Cool_Mat_Dogs.htm)

None of these "tips" are meant to make it okay to leave your dog in a hot car, they are just to make traveling more comfortable and safe for them.

I've broken a window on more than one occasion.  My deal is i wait 10 minutes if its a hot day.  If no one shows up, then i smash their window.  If anyone said anything to me i'd simply call animal control and see what they'd say after that.

I've been tempted to do that on occassion.  I doubt I'd be strong enough to do so though.  I'm also afraid I'd be arrested or have to pay for the damage or something.

I've got several police department numbers in my cell phone and humane society numbers too, but they said it's quicker to call the police anyway.  They said they have no authority to break into a vehicle.

I stopped at Petsmart yesterday and picked up a couple Outward Hound Cool-it-collars:

 http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441809253&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032064&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1180803741074&itemNo=12&Ntt=Outward+hound+collar&In=All&previousText=Outward+hound+collar&N=2 (http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441809253&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302032064&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302023689&bmUID=1180803741074&itemNo=12&Ntt=Outward+hound+collar&In=All&previousText=Outward+hound+collar&N=2)

They only had one large in stock so I got one large, one medium and one small.  The medium does fit Briona, but I think I would like to get her a large, and I need one more large so all the dogs can have a fresh one.  Emmett used the large after Addie but I think one right out of the fridge would be nice.   I think the medium will fit around my neck so I might even wear one once I get the other 2 larges!   ;D

You soak them in water for 15-30 minutes and can put them in the fridge to make them even cooler.   I'd say they did keep the dogs a bit cooler, and the large was less than $8.00 so not that expensive.  Could even by a couple extras and if on a day trip could keep a fresh one in a cooler or something.

Breaking a window's justifiable, but what about calling a guard or police over? Anyway the point is something has to be done rather than just walking by.

Unfortunately this happens in Vegas ALL the time  :'( Between people leaving their pets in the car and the idiots leaving the bigger dogs in an open truck bed while haulin ass on the hwy I dont know what is worse

Yesterday there was a small lab mix pup left in a car at PetCo and the fire dept showed up busted the window and took the dog away from the owner ---- the fucking idiot said he didnt know he could bring his dog in the pet store to shop with  ::)

I have to say I would break the window and then call the police of fire dept rather than wait for them to show up to save the dog  -- to the owner I say bring it on

About 8 years ago I had a dog named Duchess.  She's a mix of sharpae and shepard.  Anyway, she was about a year old and I had this really huge yard, but it was unfenced (I lived in a very rural area with very few houses) and I always tied her outside for a few hours on nice days with a big bowl of water (the line was under a tree).  One day I ran down to the store and while I was gone this kid that lived down the street came into my yard and took my dogs line and shortened it so that she could not reach the water.  When I came back I noticed she was laying down, but really didn't think much of it as she usually loved to sleep out in the grass, but a short time later my daughter came running in saying that Duchess wouldn't move, that she wouldn't play with her.  I went out to see what was going on and couldn't believe my eyes.  She was so dehydrated that she was just laying there with her tongue hanging out.  I noticed her line was all tied up weird and couldn't understand why.  I untied her and brought her into the house.  I called my friend who lived next door and she ran over.  We threw Duchess into the bath and started running cool water over her while gently trying to pour some down into her lifeless body.  It took over an hour to get her temperature down and get her hydrated again.  After she was feeling better my girlfriend went around asking neighbors if they had seen anyone in the yard.  Thats when we found out the kid down the street had been in our yard and tied her up like that.  He did it because he wanted to see her grovel for water and suffer (he was weird like that).  After that I didn't let the kids or the dog outside without me.  We moved shortly thereafter.

What a shit!!    >:(     That's why I don't leave them out when I am not home, I don't trust that someone won't let them out, take them, or they will get out.  I don't usually leave them out even when I am just in the shower.  And with Tad I am even more cautious now since I wonder if he will find any more places to squeeze through.   I keep checking to make sure he is still out there.

The kid has some "problems".  He was like 12 at the time and went to special schools.  He really should have not been left to play outside alone anyway.  I believe after this situation he was shipped to school that keeps you throughout the week.

That's a terrible story.  These are the types of kids that grow up to be child and spouse abusers  :-\

Perhaps pet owners should be less emotionally needy. Then they could leave their pets at home when running errands and so on.

It gets so hot in the car.  Just a few years ago here in Hawaii a lady left her baby in the car and then went swimming at the YMCA.  She forgot she had brought her kid.  If I remember right about 30 minutes later or so someone saw the kid and ran inside to get the mom.  She was arrested and not sure what happened.

One time here I was really close to breaking the window of a car that had two dogs in it with just a small crack in the window of like an inch.  I kept yelling out and finally someone came out.  They were foreigners but I gave them a rash of shit for doing what they did.  I am pretty sure they got the point.

Seriously, why do morons idiots cart animals around like they're kids. Half of the pet people I know are more worried about their dogs than spouses or children. These same ijits can't figure out why all their relationships always fail.

Well, I can't talk for all idiots....but sometimes days are planned with the dog involved.  That way he's not just sitting home all day.  Sometimes we'll go for a walk & bring him a long.  It's good for us, good for him, & people come up & talk to us about him.  It seems to be good socially as physically.

Do we cart him everywhere...no...but at least 50% of the time I suppose.

It's also good to have a dog used to riding in a car especially when it's time to really go somewhere like the Vets.  I've known pet owners that put a dog in a car & they go nuts because they are not used to it.  Our pup loves the car & behaves better than most kids in the back seat.

I'll tell ya what RB,

Poll a few of the typical petwits.. They'll know what food is recalled, best kibble, know where to get stupid looking sweaters, booties and everything else pet. Ask them what their kid had for dinner, what kid toys were recalled, about their spouses day, etc... and all you will get is an embarassed look or no response.

Maybe you have to learn the sad, pathetic, ugly truth. :)

I just find it funny that if you ask a petwit: "What did you feed your dog today and why?" You'll get a really detailed answer talking about allergies, recalls, tests, poop smell, etc... Yet, ask something about their kids or spouse an you get a blank stare.  :)

I just have an odd sense of what's funny, that's all. I don't expect you to get why I find some of the pet drivel funny, much the same way a petwit wouldn't me to understand why they put so much more attention into animals than they do real people.

What about when you ask someone about their kids & what they did today & they give you a blank stare....& they don't have pets?

There's a lot of people that don't want kids...but have pets.  There's a lot of people that don't have pets or kids.  I find a very small percentage of people that give precedence of their pets over their kids.  Most people that neglect their kids...neglect their pets as well.

And you deducted that from a message board and lumped everyone in that category?  Gee people posting on a Pet Board talking about their pets.  Who woulda thunk it.   Especially since getbig is the place you want to put info about your kids on.

I thought you were smarter than that drkock.   :-\

Hmmmm,

It's obvious I touched a nerve, LOL!

Can't recall posting any info about my kids.. except for a tragic incidence at school: A classmate had the same lunchbox and we had to go buy another one immediately. Other than that, I've pretty much kept personal stuff off the forums. I can't recall my ever putting pics of the kids on the alphabet boards, it's usually knny or jimmy. Kind of odd to lump them together like that.

I will admit that spending time with my children doing stuff is way more of a priority than walking dogs could ever be. If that makes me a bad person, I can live with it. If I weren't so lazy (and a little fat, for me) I'd take a current pic for MS to replace the old one.

Can we get back on topic?  :-*

I had a "conversation" with a dog owner this weekend, in the grocery store parking lot.  It wasn't dangerously hot, so I didn't get in his face too much.  I waited 27 minutes (called the police on the 19th minute) until he came out.  He was pretty much clueless, telling me "that's why her hair is cut short" and "I leave the windows cracked".  I explained the dangers, handed him one of those flyers from mydogiscool.com and called the police back.

As a pet advocate, where do the pet owner's rights end and yours begin?

Who said you were a bad person?  First you bitch that people were talking about pets on other boards, then a board is made so it is not going on any other boards anymore, and you come here and bitch that people care about their pets.

And then make that asinine statement I quoted.  It's almost like it pisses you off personally that people care for pets.

You are like when Royalty was coming over to the sex board to complain.

It's a crime to neglect your pets.  Not as serious a crime as if it was a child, but still a crime.   If you wouldn't leave a child in a hot car, don't leave an animal.

It's a pretty simple question. At what point do advocates have a right to intercede on a pet's behalf? It's probably a little too complicated for the forum but I'm curious where the right comes from and who determines that point.

I, for instance, see fat people abusing their bodies with food all the time. Though I've been sorely tempted there hasn't been an occasion where food was slapped out of their hands.  :)

It's the kid/pet comparison I find interesting. As far as popping in on occasion, I have an intrest in Abnormal Psych. Can you honestly think of a better place to ocassionally observe? :)

There are laws concerning pets.   So those are the only legal rights.  You can see a dog chained up outside 24/7 and as long as it has food, shelter, water, there is nothing that can be done, even if the only time the dog gets any attention is when the food and water is brought out twice a day.

You compared kids to pets. And you made assumptions about everyone who has a pet.

If you don't care for animals that's fine, I won't judge you for it, unless you abuse them.  Why do you judge people who do care for animals?

Go observe on other boards, part of the reason this board was made was so we didn't have to listen to you bitch.   And here you are, bitching again.

that to me, is very interesting.

IMO....I get myself involved only if I see an immediate danger to a pet/child.

If adults want to kill themselves...thats fine.  They are responsible for their own actions.

Pets & children (unfortunately) are dependent on asshole humans that lock them up in blazing hot cars (for example).

If I walked by any car & saw a child or pet just sitting there....I would most likely do or say something.

Not really, most people bore the bejesus out of me. The process (thought, illness, decision making and so on.. ) is way more interesting than the person. Hence the fascination with abnormal psych. The thought processes of people who identify above and beyond the norm with animals can be interesting.

Last year a guy in our town left his wife in a burning building to save his dog. Sure that's an extreme case but he totally forgot about her. She smelled something, sent him downtairs to check, he saw the fire, grabbed the dog and put it in the car with a blanket so it wouldn't get cold. Never went back for his wife or even yelled for her. I find it interesting that a guy that's been married to a woman longer than most of us have been alive (40+ yrs) never gave his wife a second thought.

I would say they weren't in a happy relationship

plenty of people would do the same thing

There's also a TON of people that are unhappy with their pets drcock.

Look at Pet Shelters/Pounds.

How many times have you heard of a story where people drive out in the country with old blue & drop them some where?

My first animal i ever had as a pet was a cat that was abused.  The former owner did not want it....& dragged it behind a car trying to kill it.  My second pet was my dog (chocolate lab).  A neighbor got it & had no concept how to care for a pet.  Obviously, he did not realize that if you beat a dog...it will eventually bite you.  I was 11 years old & the dog picked me as it's owner.  I had nothing to do with it.  The dog followed me & wanted to play with me....but hell, I never fed it one morsel.  My father went over to the neighbors one day & asked our neighbor his intentions with the dog.  Well, he was honest & said he was going to dispose of the dog & she was only 6-8 months old!  So, there I had two pets that were abused that lived a very long time.  My cat lived until 19 years old & my dog lived 14 years.

We can go round & round with this & I can give you plenty of examples how people treat their kids if you like?  I've got friends that practically had to raise themselves if it wasn't for some help of neighbors & friends.

It's up to adults to teach their own kids how to treat others & living creatures.

If the parents wont do it...I won't turn a blind eye to abuse & neglect.

I've also come to learn from personal experience....how people treat their animals....is how they treat people in their family, spouses, & personal lives.  I've been in relationships were I was "disposed of".  When I stopped & looked back...I should have seen it coming just in the way they treated their pets before & during when I was in the relationship.
