MORE AND MORE DEMOCRATS COME OUT TO SUPPORT THE WALL

Democratic members have increasingly expressed support for a physical barrier on the U.S.-Mexico border over the course of immigration negotiations, making it harder for party leaders to ignore their positions.

Prior to the lengthy partial government shutdown, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer seemed to have complete control over the members of his party, even those who had expressed support for the wall during election campaigns.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — then the House minority leader — promised that she would not appropriate a single dollar to the wall, despite Trump’s promise of a shutdown if he did not receive $5.7 billion to build on the border.

But a number of rank and file Democrats have since said that they support a physical barrier in concert with other border security measures, perhaps due to pressure from the extended shutdown and a desire to prevent another one.

Freshman California Rep. Katie Hill, Washington Rep. Adam Smith, and Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos have all conceded that fencing in certain areas is something that they are not reflexively opposed to.

Virginia Rep. Elaine Luria, along with 30 other members, urged Speaker Pelosi to make a deal with Trump in a letter last week and offered perhaps the most accurate view of Trump’s border proposal by Democrats yet.

“He’s not talking about a wall from sea to shining sea,” Luria said. “That is not what we are talking about. We are talking about physical barriers as recommended by experts.” (RELATED: Immigration Experts Explain What An Effective Border Wall Actually Looks Like)

New Hampshire Sen. Maggie Hassan told CNN on Monday, “We all pledged to work in good faith to find common ground on border security. That’s what I’m committed to doing, and I think that really starts with making sure we’re listening to the experts on the front lines on this, and that may include strategic fencing in certain places.”

Customs officers made the largest fentanyl seizure ever recorded at any port of entry in the United States the day after President Donald Trump signed a bill putting an end to the longest government shutdown in history.

Illegal US border crossings swell to 76,000 in February

At 76,103, the number of people stopped at the border or detained after crossing was up sharply from the roughly 61,000 average for the previous three months, a surprising surge for what is usually a downturn in the coldest month of the year.

It was also more than double the number of February 2018 and 3.2 times the number for February 2017, the first full month after President Donald Trump took office promising to take aim at illegal immigration.

"We are currently facing a humanitarian and national security crisis along our southwest border," said CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan.

"The vast increases in families and children coming across our border, in larger groups and in more remote areas, presents a unique challenge to our operations and facilities, and those of our partners."

Border Patrol: 300 percent spike in family apprehensions creates 'humanitarian crisis'

Apprehensions of migrants along the nation's southern border are the  highest in more than a decade, creating what the top U.S. Customs and Border Protection official described Tuesday as a mushrooming crisis that threatens to overwhelm federal authorities.

Twice-Deported Illegal Alien Accused of Child Sex Crimes Pleads Guilty

An illegal alien who was previously deported twice from the United States has pleaded guilty to re-entering the country after being accused of child sex crimes.

Eliezer Merino-Tetlactle, a 25-year-old illegal alien from Mexico, pleaded guilty to illegally re-entering the U.S. in the Western District of Louisiana this week.

The United States is projected to add about 1.5 million illegal aliens to the American population by the end of the year, should current rates of Catch and Release, border crossings, and visa overstays pan out.

I'm a democrat but I'm against illegal immigration.
I have no problems with a wall. But that won't stop the worst crime .

El Chapo used elaborate tunnels and warehouses on both sides of the border.
A wall won't stop that.
It slows it down a lot though.  You will never catch everyone but the vast majority of illegal criminals from Mexico are not Chapo and do not have those resources.

I think the "Build the wall" Trumpers are motivated more by a cultural concern.
It's a racist based fear of the "browning" of America.

I'm for strong borders, but I don't want the USA to become North Korea or the old DDR ( east Germany).
I have no issues with a wall, but I'd like to see a guest worker program like the one G W Bush wanted.

I have no problem with a guest worker program either.  Immigration needs to be controlled not a free for all.  People forget there were decades in the 1900's where there was almost no immigration at all.

Let's say the U.S. has only so many dollars to spend on illegal immigration which doesn't cover everything possible to reduce it, would you recommend spending the money on a wall, on manpower or spread it between the two, knowing neither the wall nor the manpower shortage will be adequately funded?

Since you asked, I would make it a criminal action to a) employ an illegal immigrant with a 30 day jail term for the 1st offense, 60 day 2nd offense, 90 day for the 3rd offense, etc, etc.

b) make it illegal to allow school districts to allow illegals to go to school there with the same punishments as (a) for school administrators

c) any city, county, state or federal official defending illegals in sanctuary cities would have same punishments as (a&b)

d) all welfare benefits (food stamps, ADC, WIC, Medicaid, etc) would not be given to illegals

I would give all illegals 30 days to leave the country on their own uninterrupted.  Once that 30 days is up I would completely close the border and put military personnel on the border until the wall was completed.  After the wall was completed there would still be border patrol agents along the border every so many miles to insure no one gets through.

After all of this is done I would open the guest worker program and would allow visas given for farm, factory, construction and other businesses that need employees that Americans won't do.  Those legal workers would receive health care and freedom to send their kids to school here as well.

Regardless of what it costs initially the savings over the long haul would be worth it.  Legal workers who commit crimes would be sent back and their visas taken.  Any illegal caught at this point here would be put in a detention jail and later deported.

If these things were implemented the desire to get in this country illegally would evaporate AND the desire for business people to hire illegals would go as well.  The first time a meat packing plant owner did 30 days in jail would be the last time, I guarantee.
