Residents of Manhattan's 19-building, 1,191-apartment Jacob Riis projects, have been without power and water since late Monday evening, and there's been no sign of help from local government.
In all, city officials estimate some 49,000 public housing residents have been stranded by the storm, left without the resources to escape or find alternative lodging.
When Getty photographer Mario Tama ventured inside, he found residents huddled in living rooms lit by solitary candles and gas stoves running constantly for heat.

The Jacob Riis project is located on farmost edge of the East Village, between Avenue D and the Franklin D Roosevelt Drive and covering seven blocks between 6th and 13 street. Each of the 19 buildings is between six and 14 stories high.

That damn 90-year old lady should know the intricacies of an electrical system. She has been alive for 90 years, and in all this time, she couldn't learn how to fix electrical problems? What the hell has she been doing with her time? Probably a damn liberal/democrat. Probably said to herself growing up, "I dont need to learn how to fix that wire. I will just call an electrician."

Angry residents pelted utility crews with eggs as they tried to restore power in Bridgeport, Conn., after the mayor claimed the local power company had "shortchanged" the state's largest city as it tries to recover from superstorm Sandy.
United Illuminating workers reported eggs and other objects being thrown at them a day after Mayor Bill Finch said the utility was taking care of wealthy suburbs while his constituents suffered. The unrest caused United Illuminating to pull its workers out until the city agreed to provide police protection.
"Citizens began throwing things at the crews," Michael West, a spokesman for United Illuminating, told FoxNews.com. "It started to get pretty hairy. They did not feel safe."
West said it started with verbal abuse and escalated.
"We communicated with the city and said if you don’t provide police support, we can't have our crews there in harm's way," he said.

Exactly. Sometimes 3-4x in one hurricane season. These people had plenty of warning that the storm was coming and they had plenty of time to prepare: buy supplies, water, gas up their cars, etc. Most of them chose not to do so and now they are stuck. Choices have consequences.
I feel bad for the homes that were destroyed and people who lost everything, but not having power for a few days and running out of gas . . . ::)

I remember talking with my wife (then girlfriend) when she lived on Guam. She was getting her place ready to get hit by a "super typhoon". She was telling she might not be in contact for a while. All I could remember was following the storm on computer on NOAA. Some crazy stuff. Much rather be hit with an earthquake!

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended federal disaster aid in nine New York counties to include supplemental funding for infrastructure repairs in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
Eligible applicants in the counties of Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk and Westchester can now apply for FEMA public assistance reimbursement for repairs to roads and bridges, water control facilities, buildings and equipment, utilities, parks and recreational facilities and other facilities.

How quickly did you think this would all be fixed like nothing ever happened? I think you and some other New Yorker's have unrealistic expectations. I suspect in these situations, people with medical emergencies are the first folks to get assistance. I did read where school was in session today, so at least the kids had a place to go to get warm.
How's your place for heat. Supposedly, there is a Nor'Easter headed your way.

8 million lost power.... 3-4 states underwater... and its ONLY 49 THOUSAND without power - that's very good for 4 days after the storm.
In florida, there were 49k without power in N ft myers, punta gorda.... and it was port charlotte that god the brunt of the storm. Goodness knows way more than them lacked power 4 days afterwards.
For real, it sucks if you dont have power - i sympathize - but only 49k, just 4 days after an entire chunk of the nation was submerged, is very good response time actually.

Do I have government welfare cases? I am not aware of this. Truth be told, my friends and family are all pretty well off. I feel certain that none of them is on welfare.
However, when I was working for the school district some of my fellow employees were so underpaid or under-employed, they qualified for food stamps. In Oregon, classified school employees who are hourly and therefore off work during break periods can not qualify for unemployment during the summer or over the two week Christmas break, Interestingly enough, migrant workers are unemployment eligible when there are no crops to pick or other farm labor available.
