The word history came from Herodotus's book Histories written in 430 BC.

Nice description of Herodotus:


At the 29 minute mark Herodotus tells a story of Phoenicians sailing around Africa starting from the Red Sea and the Phonecians add the detail that side of the boat the sun was shinning on changed.  This is exactly the detail that today tells us they actually did sail around Africa because as they passed the equator the sun would change sides.  Herodotus states that he doubts this story.

Europeans would not sail around Africa again for 1900 years, but the Phoenicians were were doing it in 400 BC.
