Casey Viator was sensational when he won Mr America at 19. Those of us training at the time shook our heads and wondered what the point was if a guy could get that huge at only 19. I remember reading the September 1971 copy of Ironman Magazine with Casey on the cover and Sergio featured inside. I literally didn't see any point in training that day so went home. Both guys were supermen in those days.

I met Casey after the 1980 Mr Olympia contest. He didn't stand out in the contest but when I saw photos of Casey taken by Robert Nailon at the Randwick Gym I was impressed. The guy had these huge forearms. Anyway, Casey remembered me because I was in the magazines about the same time as he was. He said, "Hey, kid, has it been 10 years already?" I was older than him but what did that matter, I was like a kid compared to his size.

Here is the magazine that featured Casey on the cover. Also a relaxed photo that I found and edited to bring out his physique better.

Casey was a good guy. He achieved plenty early in his career but didn't win the Olympia but came close in 82 I think when he got cut up. He and several other bodybuilders might have placed higher if they had wider shoulders or a smaller head!

Here is Casey more in proportion.

R.I.P.

Casey at the 70' Mr. America contest; placing 3rd at only 18 years of age... Would go on to win the title the following year weighing 20lbs. heavier, at 19 only years of age... The best built teen that ever lived..

Didn't Arthur Jones say Casey was the most perfect mesomorph he ever saw?

I am one of the few who think Casey looked better later on. 82 was his best look IMHO. I don't think he competed after that except for the masters O in the 90's in which he looked out of shape. He was one of my inspirations but I have heard rumors that he was a little bit off.

very sad to see him gone. :'(

Heart attack. His girlfriend came home, found him passed on the floor. He had congestive heart failure, and was still smoking.

Sad thing, but that's the thing with a lot of the big guys, they hold on to the weight for too long, and then.... As much as I hate to admit it, one should at least shift some training toward cardio/GPP after a certain point.

Casey was in his absolute best condition for the 82 Olympia that Dickerson won. He was using about 15 sets a body part according to David Young who trained in the same gym.

Yeah, mentally off. Just rumors. Mostly on ironage but you know they don't really talk shit about the oldtimers. SO it was kind of vague.

This news should be a sticky............why so few reactions?

His claim to fame was the age on which he won an important competition. Apart from that...the rest is quite average (relatively speaking).
The Colorado experiment was a PR hoax, exeggerated numbers, he inflated himself by tripling the dosages only for Arthur Jones' media campaign to sell more fitness machines.
