Title: Total lack of motivation v. I have no idea where topics like this belong.
Post by: Akus on January 11, 2009, 06:17:24 PM
First and foremost of all, I apologize if this doesn't belong here. There is a section for teenagers and for people over 35. I am 31, so I get I'm SOL.

I have a problem of motivation. This is not your typical lazy beer drinking pizza eating loser whining how he can't get his ass up to complete simple goals, even those that have jack shit to do with bodybuilding.

I have a problem of burning out. I have periods when I constantly attend a gym and if circumstances don't allow me, I can set up my own minigym in my apartment ( I have a pilates ball and two 25lbs dumbbells ). But sometimes I stop working out altogether. It really has nothing to do with lazyness. I am simply burned out of the routine.

I have asked people before what to do about beating boredom. I have received an advice on trying different exercizes, which, of course, not only is good for breaking up the boredom, it is also healthy for the body, as it adjusts quickly to the same strain it is subjected to and constant variety of exercizes constantly puts the body in the unusual and uncomfortable (in a good way) circumstances. It worked.

But sometimes I just feel burned out of exercizing altoghether. Sometimes I wonder if people like Jay Cutler or Markus Ruhl ever wake up one day and go: "If I see another dumbbell or cross cable machine or anything having anything to do with a physical exercise, I will shoot myself". That is how I feel sometimes and believe you me, I have ways and ways to go before my physique looks even remotely like that of either of those two.

I don't need to be told that I am just lazy and my fat ass (5'10", 220 lbs) needs to get its act together. I already know that :D. I just want some kind of a pep talk or some kind of a mental therapy (as much mental therapy can be possible using typed words on the internet). I heavily suspect that this may not even be a problem, but a symptom of another problem.

I know that bodybuilding is not the end, but merely means to the end. Most bodybuilders I personally know told me that if I pump muscles to pump muscles, then I have problems. Having 25" arms shouldn't be my sole meaning of life. It is a merely a decoration of sorts, kind of like a tie for men, or earrings for women. And I am currently at crossroads in my life, doing a lot of soul searching. And while I don't know yet who I am and what I want to do, I know I want to build my body to look, as the saying goes, "jacked". Not for someone else's seal of approval, and not for the ladies (Ok, may be a little :)), but for my own self improvement.

So, I hope some one can relate and be my personal Tony Robbins.

Thanks.

Best way to beat boredom is be active and push yourself. There is no analytical solution to it; it's just a matter of doing it.

I don't know what you mean by "burned out" lol If that's so excruciating to you then you are better off doing nothing.  ::)

You've got to want a better body more than you want to be out getting pissed or sitting around eating pizza and chips.

If you don't want it, congratulations, that puts you in the bottom 99.5%+ of people in the world.

Up to you.....

Hello new member and welcome to this great site.  :)

If you are overtrained, perhaps take a week off from all training, keep your cals high and just relax and get plenty of sleep.

Thankyou for joining this site and i hope to talk to you again.

This is why you are getting nowhere. A Pilates Ball and 25 pound weights...Sounds like a Bally's Commercial

So you want to know how to train everyday without getting burned out or bored? Just take a nap when you get a chance and always eat a pre workout meal with carbs and protein. Doing this your body will always be ready for workout every day. Does this sound so hard? The rest is up to you.

Then JFT regardless of mental state cause then you know your body got what it takes, doing everything right with nutrition and recovery. It's a maturity thing. Everyone has to go through some lack of discipline or motivation, some mistakes etc, to get it right. If you don't, it will just come up later. But in the long run, recovery and diet needs to be pretty much faultless, no real way around that. When you are young you can get away with a lot but if you want to keep at it rest of life, don't fool yourself.

Thank you for a first mature reply.

I want to ask you something else

Sometimes I plan to work a particular body part, like, say, my back, but when I go to the gym, it is so crowded and, sure enough, the cable pulls and rows are constantly taken and I can't just do something else, because I did legs yesterday and I did biceps and triceps the day before and they still haven't recovered. It really kills a motivation when, instead of working out, you waste precious time in an already limited time window to work out hunting for the available bench or a dumbbell. I work out at 24 hour fitness, and when I am able to work out, the place is crowded and when I can't (work, asleep, whatever), sure enough it's empty.

Anyone else dealt with this?

And don't let the mind play tricks with you as it typical for us humans. Let's be real that time you take working out you would just watch tv or spend on getbig.com, porn sites or whatever anyway, so you just might as well train instead. No loss. Simple.

All secrets are out now! Have fun.  ;)

Set short term and long term targets. They are great for motivation. Take pictures, don't look at them for 6-8 weeks. Convince yourself you have to make an improvement by then. After 6-8 weeks look at the pictures, take another set, see your improvement and repeat.

Also, get a routine down. eg a sequence of things you always do before you workout or certain music as well.

Finally, eat well, train smart and get enough sleep. Good luck

Agree with B2L, a pre gym ritual can be helpful.  Don't take $20 worth of supplements every time like supp companies want you to, lol, but just find something simple like having a coffee or a bottle of water.  Also, make it as easy as possible to go.  I workout at home, but if I went to a gym I'd always have my gear ready to go, put in a bag in the car if you go straight from work, etc (get it ready for the next trip as soon as you come home after a workout).

Setting a schedule (a realistic schedule, given your other obligations), even if it's only 1x or 2x a week, and committing to it can be useful if you juggle a busy life and feel rushed or like you're 'fitting in' your trips to the gym.  If your scheduled gym time is 5-6pm on Wed and someone asks you to do something which conflicts, then the answer is "Can't, I'm busy."

Consider backing off on intensity, frequency of training, or possibly volume if you're in there lifting constantly for over an hour.  Consistency is more important than intensity.

How you view the gym is important.  Try to see it as a place where you can devote your energies solely to yourself.  Odds are, like most of us, you spend most of your day devoting your energy to others.  The gym can be your place and your time.  You can go there and leave behind all the worry, stress, and bullshit of daily life.  Never bring any of that stuff into the gym with you.  Rest assured that it will be waiting for you when you exit, but give yourself permission to be 100% worry free while in the gym.

Try going for long walks in the evening.
You'll be surprised what a difference this makes, it's actually good cardio, not to mention the fresh air and getting some time to think.

Also, if you don't want to go to gym, try doing bodyweight exercises. You can do them in your room or lounge or whatever so there's not much excuse not to do them.
For instance if I'm sitting around on my computer, I'll stop every now and then, do some push-ups or any bodweight exercise, then record it....and at the end of the day it adds up quite nicely even if time is limited since it just takes a minute or so to do them each time.

And if you're not committed to a diet....just try to be more aware of what you're eating, look at the labels and try and at least reduce the sugar, fat or carbs or whatever.

Hello Akus

Actually you are doing well...at least you are doing something and at least you feel guilty about not working out unlike a lot of other people who won't get off the couch even if you used a crane...

Burn out happens a lot for guys who are our age and who are naturals and don't take drugs...our bodies can only take so much and we expend a lot of mental energy just taking care of our kids, our wives and ourselves plus working all day....it's really tough to maintain focus to work out...so what you are going through is very normal....don't let some of the putdowns on here get to you...

I go through the same thing....the best way to deal with it is to try and schedule your week on sunday or monday so you know when you are going to the gym and what time...and don't over do it by making unrealistic goals..if you can only make it to the gym two times a week then go two times a week..thats okay....work out your upper body one day and your lower body the next and do cardio on those days as well.....you can even add one or two other gym days where you only do cardio and abs..this will motivate you to go more since on those days you know you won't be punishing your body by lifting weights and it will make you show up to the gym more often...

don't beat yourself up because you are not motivated....this only causes you to become less motivated...too much self-criticism wears you down psychologically.....just start slow and do the above...pretty soon you will be proud of yourself because you will be consistent

I beg to differ. To me, lifting weights is indeed fun. It's a blast, which is why I've been doing it for as long as I have.

That's what so neat about Ronnie Coleman's videos. He looks as if he's having the time of his life, lifting poundages that would KILL the average IFBB pro......"YEAH BUDDY!!!! LIGHT WEIGHT!!!!!!"

switch gyms every so often - it helps keep me motivated plus i dont end up standing around bullshitting near as much - maybe try getting a training partner - someone who will kick your ass if you dont show up - watch some videos (ton of them on you tube) - or just man up and decide youre gonna do even if you hate it some days

switching gyms is to much work.......getting a training partner is a good idea though...but sometimes training partners can be bad for you if they aren't motivated...they can actually contribute to you decreasing your workouts
