The only way to sell magazines in the bodybuilding industry is to capitalize on the most fucked up parts of it, ie: the adult industry aspect of it & straight up steroid talk.
You may have a point. Flex Mag used to have articles on steroids, and Muscular Development used go to the natural route.
Flex also used to have fitness/female bodybuilder swimsuit/lingerie pictorials. Also, Muscular Development in the early 2000s used to have layouts and pictorials of women who wore nothing but small pieces of electrical tape.

I worked for both FLEX and MD in the past & have seen the decline of both from the inside (and an even steeper decline more recently). Sure, print magazines are dying & being from that industry, I made sure to also have a digital version of my magazine and those are free to read. More views = more numbers for potential advertisers. But if the content blows, no one will look even if it is free.

That's why I chose to go the 'rogue' route, if you will. No federation fellatio, the edgier the better and to also have a section to post reader's photos.

All the mistakes that I saw those other publications made are the ones I avoid.

I swear by these Lingerie Pictorials back then, they were the fucking best in the business and Flex was leading the way.....

I worked as bb writer for a few years. Late 90:s to early 00:s. Things were diffrent then it was not all internet yet. I still think you can make a buck with this type of writing but it needs to be more specified than now. Like being totally open with steroid use. I think that was flex downfall.

Suprised it lasted this long with the internet and the fact the magazine turned to shit years ago, read it for a few years from 99 to 2002 before getting the internet in back then you’d have sometimes 4 or 5 articles of top pros training, yes we later realised they were mostly ghostwritten shite but being young and naive it seemed awesome, all the columns has half decent content.

several years ago bought one just to see what it was like and it was complete and utter fucking garbage, the cover had that stinking twat Brandon curry doing triceps extensions pulling a vile disgusting annoyingly punchable face like he was pullling a deadlift 10kg over his max, this was also the main article in the magazine, the other was that wonky eyed cu nt Peter putman the only interesting part was the one photo of his lass. Didn’t even read it and threw it in the bin, being a bit of a hoarder if it had been even semi interesting I’d have kept it like I did all my older issues.
They deserve to cease publication based on that one issue alone

Steroid talk is definitely the material that people want to read about and the MDs of the world - who strictly cover the IFBB pros, etc. - won't get much out of them, if anything, about that. One of the main reasons why I chose to cover the side of the industry that can talk about it. Lee Priest, Bostin Loyd and Rich Piana are/were columnists in my publication.

Clever! ;D

I haven't flipped fapped to through FLEX since the 1990's.  Why did I stop?  I grew up...  I quickly concluded the articles were repetitive... how many ways can you say the same thing?  Many photo spreads felt like soft core porn... if I want porn I'll get the real thing and it will be hard core.  The internet made the magazines superfluous... you can get all current and past contest coverage with a click of your mouse for free.  Why wait and pay for a monthly magazine?  Bulk... who wants to store or tote around years of magazines?  Since my first FLEX in about 1994 I've moved about 10 times (not an uncommon number for grad students chasing fellowships or young academics).

Someone above said it: print is dead (or dying). As in nature, only the strong survive.  This kind of magazine has a window: guys in teens and twenties.  A man still reading FLEX in his 30s, 40s, or 50s needs to move on.

Fixed for accuracy

The original incarnation of Muscle Media 2000 was the only magazine worth reading at the time. Straight-up juice talk and no federation fellatio. Then they went full homo.
