Oscar Pistorius charged with murder after girlfriend shot dead
South African athlete will appear in court later on Thursday after Reeva Steenkamp was found dead at his home in Pretoria
South African police have arrested star sprinter Oscar Pistorius for allegedly shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his home in Pretoria.
Police said they had opened a murder investigation after a 30-year-old woman was found dead in the upmarket Silver Lakes gated community on the outskirts of the capital, where the Paralympic and Olympic runner lives.
"We found a 9mm pistol at the scene. A 26-year-old man was taken into custody," a police spokeswoman said.
Details about the incident remain unclear. There was speculation in the local media that Pistorius may have mistaken her for a burglar and the shooting could have been a result of a Valentine's Day surprise gone wrong. Local media suggested that Steenkamp may have been trying to surprise her boyfriend in his home on the heavily guarded compound and had been mistaken for an intruder. She was shot four times in the head and the arm.
"I can confirm that a woman has been fatally wounded in a shooting at Oscar Pistorius's house," said the police spokeswoman. "A 26-year-old man has been taken into custody," she said. "The incident happened at 3am. We received a call and attended the scene. The call did not come from the man in custody but from another person. Currently there is an inquiry into what happened."
There was a large police presence outside Pistorius's house and media descended on the estate where the shooting happened. Pistorius will appear in court later on Thursday. A police spokesman said the sprinter was distraught. "We can't comment on his emotional wellbeing, but he is traumatised after losing someone close to him," he said.
Steenkamp, 30, a well-known South African model, had been dating Pistorius since November last year and was due to appear in a reality TV show called Tropika Island of Treasure. The law graduate from Port Elizabeth gave an interview to the Sunday Times in South Africa last week where she described her boyfriend as "an impeccable man who always has her best interests at heart".
In the last 24 hours she was tweeting about her hopes for Valentine's Day, writing: "What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay." In one of her last tweets she responded to one follower who said she was going to make her husband a card with her children. Steenkamp wrote: "That sounds amazing! Wow that's what it's all about! It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!"
Steenkamp's publicist Sarit Tomlinson told Sky News that she was a "talented bright young girl" whose star was rising. "She was the sweetest human being and an absolute angel on Earth," she said. "She was the kindest most unbelievable girl." She said Steenkamp and Pistorius had been together for a couple of months in "a healthy fabulous relationship".
On Steenkamp's Facebook page – where she described herself as "SA Model, FHM Cover Girl, Tropika Island of Treasure Celeb Contestant, Law Graduate, Ambassador" – tributes poured in. Sibi Tshego Sibanda wrote: "Heaven has gained an Angel. Rest in peace," and Elmarie Hattingh wrote: "Rest in Peace Reeva, May God be with the family and friends."
South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime and some homeowners carry weapons to defend themselves against intruders.
There were indications that Pistorius did have fears about his safety. In an interview with the Daily Mail before the London 2012 Games it was revealed he slept with a pistol next to his bed and kept a machine gun by a window. Pistorius had been arrested previously. In September 2009 he was arrested for assault after slamming a door on a woman. Family and friends at the time said it was an accident.
Pistorius, known as Blade Runner because of the carbon fibre prosthetic blades he wears to race, is the world's best-known Paralympic star. He was born without fibulas in both legs and had his legs amputated as an 11-month-old. He made history at London 2012 when he became the first double amputee to run in both the Olympics and Paralympics, running in the 400m and 4x400m relay at the Olympics. During and after the competition he regularly tweeted pictures of him and his girlfriend together.
The Johannesburg-born athlete won a legal battle over his blades with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) in 2008 for the right to compete in able-bodied competition.

A few years ago it was made law that if you had several firearms you could had to reapply for your license and would be able to only keep one of them.
Or face up to 15 years in jail.
The rest had to be handed in the police to be melted down.
And surprise surprise many of these 'melted down' weapons landed up in the hands of robbers/murderers....
It's also very very difficult to get a license especially if.....well you can probably guess.
Of course, you can buy an AK-47 or cheap Chinese pistol in any squatter camp so these laws only affect the people trying to protect themselves.
The main reason was of course the governments constant paranoia of a counter-revolution or uprising. Especially as many whites still had their service weapons from their national service days....and this was an easy way to disarm them.

JOHANNESBURG — The Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius, who made sporting history by becoming the first double amputee sprinter to compete in the Olympics, was charged with murder on Thursday after a woman was fatally shot in his home in Pretoria, according to South African police officials.
The development stunned a nation that had elevated Mr. Pistorius to iconic status because of his ability to overcome acute adversity and represent South Africa’s achievements on the world stage.
Confirming the charges, police officials said they planned to oppose Mr. Pistorius’s expected application for bail at a court hearing scheduled for Friday. The police had initially said he would appear in court later on Thursday.
South African and other media quoted associates of the victim as identifying her as Reeva Steenkamp, a model whose Twitter page described her as a “cover girl” and a law school graduate. Ms. Steenkamp and Mr. Pistorius had frequently been seen together at society events and South African media identified her as his girlfriend, giving them the aura of a golden couple beloved by the society pages and photographers.
Mr. Pistorius, 26, won two gold medals and a silver at last year’s Paralympic Games in London. In the 2012 Olympics, he reached the 400-meter semifinal and competed in the 4x400 meter relay. Known by the nickname Blade Runner, he races using carbon fiber prosthetic blades.
Early Thursday morning, the police responded to a report of gunshots in the upscale housing complex where Mr. Pistorius lives, said Col. Katlego Mogale, a police spokeswoman. When they arrived, they found paramedics treating a 30-year-old woman for gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead and a 26-year-old man was taken into custody, Colonel Mogale said.
Colonel Mogale would not comment on a possible motive for the shooting.
“A case of murder has been opened,” she said before the police said they had formally charged Mr. Pistorius.
Reports from local media said that Mr. Pistorius told the police that the shooting was an accident and that he had mistaken the victim for an intruder.
But speaking to reporters in Pretoria, another police spokeswoman, Brig. Denise Beukes said those reports had taken her by surprise.
She also said that the police had responded previously to complaints of a “domestic nature” at the runner’s home but declined to give further details.
South Africa has one of the world’s highest rates of violent crime, and break-ins by armed robbers are relatively common. Legal handgun ownership is also common, with some restrictions.
Mr. Pistorius’s father, Henke Pistorius, said in a telephone interview from South Africa: “I wasn’t there; I have too much respect for Oscar to speculate. I have no clue what happened. The only person who can make any statement will be Oscar himself.”
Asked if his son’s relationship had been troubled, Mr. Pistorius said, “Not as far as I know. But I don’t discuss my son’s relationships. I have in fact not met the lady. I don’t know.”
He said that his son had “been in an excellent frame of mind” and had been training, but did not know whether he planned to try to compete at the world track and field championships in August in Moscow.
Adele Kirsten of Gun-Free SA, an anti-gun violence organization, said that whatever the motive, the shooting was an avoidable tragedy.
“The idea that you have a gun to protect your family against intruders, the data doesn’t bear that out,” Ms. Kirsten said. “What it tells us is that having a gun in your home puts you and your family at risk of being shot.”
In the Paralympics last September, Mr. Pistorius won individual gold, when he successfully defended his Paralympic 400 meter title. He had lost his 100- and 200-meter titles, but was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100 meter relay team. He came second in the 200 meter race.
After that contest, Mr. Pistorius damaged his reputation among his followers by criticizing the winner, Alan Oliveira of Brazil, raising questions about the length of the winner’s blades. Mr. Pistorius later apologized and praised the gold medalist in the 100 meter race, Jonnie Peacock of Britain.
Mr. Pistorius, who was born without fibulas, had both legs amputated below the knee before his first birthday and he battled for many years to compete against able-bodied athletes. In 2008, he qualified for the Beijing Games but was ruled ineligible by track’s world governing body because his blades were deemed to give him a competitive advantage.
South African journalists said Mr. Pistorius lived in a walled complex near the South African capital, Pretoria. A reporter outside the compound on Thursday said it was protected by high walls and razor wire.
In a statement, the International Paralympic Committee said it would not comment “until the official police process has concluded” but it offered “its deepest sympathy and condolences to all families involved in this case.”
Sarit Tomlinson, Ms. Steenkamp’s publicist, told Sky News that the couple had a “healthy, fabulous relationship.”
On her Twitter account, Ms. Steenkamp post a message on Wednesday alluding to Valentine’s day on Feb. 14 and saying: “What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow???”
She also mentioned a South African reality TV show and described herself as “SA Model, Cover Girl, Tropika Island of Treasure Celeb Contestant, Law Graduate, Child of God.”

The man was a gun nutter who owned Pitbulls, what can I say, he is as guilty as sin. Obviously being a legless moron made him terribly insecure and to overcompensate he owned Guns and pitbulls, his girlfriend although dim, finally recognised this and was leaving to find a man who wasn't both an emotional and physical cripple. So he murdered her in cold blood.
Police said the couple were the only people in the house at the time and there was no sign of forced entry. They added that neighbours heard "screaming and shouting" around the time of the shooting, and that officer had been called to investigate incidents of a "domestic nature" at the house in the past.
In November last year Pistorius "threatened to break the legs" of the friend of a man whom he believed had slept with his then girlfriend. Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympic athlete will reportedly be tested for steroids after the banned drug was found at the home where he is accused of murdering his model girlfriend.
Mr Pistorius, 26, is accused of murdering his model girlfriend, Reena Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. He will appear in court on Tuesday.
Police asked for blood taken from Mr Pistorius to be tested for steroids, City Press claimed, in anticipation that his defence team might claim he acted in “roid rage” – an aggressive condition associated with taking large doses of performance-enhancing drugs.
A source told The Sun : “Steroid drugs were found at Pistorius’s home together with evidence of heavy drinking. That’s why police have specifically ordered that he be tested for steroids.”

The mother of Miss Steenkamp has told of her desperation for answers about why her daughter was killed.

Meanwhile, a friend of Mr. Pistorius told Afrikaans newspaper Beeld that the champion sprinter nearly shot him through the foot in a Johannesburg restaurant.
Kevin Lerena, a boxer and mutual friend of Mr Pistorius and Miss Steenkamp, said he had been dining at Tasha's restaurant in Melrose with the couple and other friends when the gun went off by mistake as Mr Pistorius examined it.
"I must emphasise that the gun belonged to one of Pistorius' friends. Oscar just wanted to look at the gun, and it sort of snagged on his pants, releasing the safety catch," he told Beeld.
"A shot went off. I wouldn't call him negligent, it was just an accident.

Oscar Pistorius, the South African Paralympic athlete will reportedly be tested for steroids after the banned drug was found at the home where he is accused of murdering his model girlfriend.
Mr Pistorius, 26, is accused of murdering his model girlfriend, Reena Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day. He will appear in court on Tuesday.
Police asked for blood taken from Mr Pistorius to be tested for steroids, City Press claimed, in anticipation that his defence team might claim he acted in “roid rage” – an aggressive condition associated with taking large doses of performance-enhancing drugs.
A source told The Sun : “Steroid drugs were found at Pistorius’s home together with evidence of heavy drinking. That’s why police have specifically ordered that he be tested for steroids.”
There was no immediate comment from police of the reported discovery of steroids.
The mother of Miss Steenkamp has told of her desperation for answers about why her daughter was killed.
June Steenkamp wept as she described the loss of "the most beautiful person who ever lived" through a "horrendous death".
"She loved like no one else could love. She had so much of herself to give and now all of it is gone. Just like that, she is gone. In the blink of an eye and a single breath, the most beautiful person who ever lived is no longer here," she told South Africa's Times newspaper.
"All we have is this horrendous death to deal with, to get to grips with. All we want are answers, answers as to why this had to happen, why our beautiful daughter had to die like this."

Defence lawyer Barry Roux then read a sworn statement from Mr Pistorius, saying the couple had decided to spend that evening at home.
They were in the bedroom when at one point Oscar Pistorius went to the balcony and heard a noise, the statement said.
"It was pitch-dark in the bedroom," it added. "I did not have my prosthetic legs on and felt extremely vulnerable."
According to the statement, the defendant thought Ms Steenkamp was still in bed, and he fired through the bathroom door believing he was shooting at an intruder.
When he realised Ms Steenkamp was not in the bed, "it filled me with horror and fear", it said.
Mr Pistorius broke the door down with a cricket bat to find his girlfriend shot inside, the statement said.

However, Pistorius could even avoid a prison term altogether by having jail time converted into a house arrest with added conditions such as a ban on drinking alcohol.
