This thread is dedicated to my favorite physique photographer in the world...Gene X Hwang.
Gene is the Jimmy Hendrix of physique photography.
He can take a concrete wall and turn it into the most beautiful and inspiring backdrop for stunning photos.
He always manages to get TEH SHOT no matter what. He makes everyone he shoots look beautiful.
And he's an all-around cool dude to boot...one of the nicest guys in the business. 8)
Gene and his partner, James Cook, have a lot of respect for FBBs and have done an outstanding job promoting FBBs and showing how beautiful they can be.

Genex is the number one women's physique photographer IMO. His stage pics are always my favorite.

I remember the first time I ever worked with Gene. It was at the 2002 Nationals, when they were held in Dallas. We saw the piano sitting by itself on the second floor of the host hotel and thought, "Hmmm...that might work." He has a terrific eye and a great gift for capturing the fit physique in such a beautiful, unique, and edgy manner.

THe B&W or Jill Brooks (?) is a great photo.
SHe has outrageous lines and the B&W contrast really brings them out.
He (Gene) has a unusual eye for contrast, even in his color work.
I bet its not easy to get in front of him for a shoot.

Here are a couple recent shots of IFBB Pro Karen Zaremba, who just crossed over from Pro Figure to Pro BB and made her BB debut at the Europa. I thought she looked really great. Her abs and vascularity are very very very impressive! 8)

In addition to working with ftvideo and taking amazing physique and contest photos, he lives in San Fransisco and does photos for weddings, special events, portraits, etc. I would have KILLED to hire Gene as my wedding photographer.
Let's just hope that he stays in the physique photography business too. 8)

His attention to lighting and contrast is awesome.
It makes or breaks outdoor shots esp.
Beach and snow is a real bitch, but the shots are SO cool if you can master the lighting/ exposure speed.
Now and then I get lucky on those... but mostly not..

Good question, I'm not sure. He may shoot film for some of his weddings, portraits, and/or special events, but I don't think he does for the physique photography and competitions.

I wanted to also introduce James Cook into this thread. James runs the ftvideo site and is Gene's partner in crime LOL. He is usually running the video camera while Gene is taking photos.
James also takes beautiful photos of the women he features on the ftvideo site, so I'm going to start adding some of his work to this collection. I did a video/photo shoot with James this summer, about a month after Junior Nats, when I was less dry and quite a bit more filled out, so I'll have to dig up a couple of photos and add them to this thread. James has a slightly different style from Gene, but his pics are really nice as well.
Gene and James are both such great guys who do a wonderful job. Here's a few pics that Gene took of James in action. :)

It really depends on the photographer and the website that he/she runs, and how he/she plans on using the photos. If the photographer runs a membership kind of site, then they will usually pay the model for the shoot, and the price is agreed upon beforehand, and a contract is signed at the shoot. The pics are usually property of both the photographer and the model after they are taken and released to the model. Some photographers will pay the model, but will specify up-front whether or not they give the model the pics to do what she pleases with as well. Some photographers are more possessive of their photos because if they give them to the models, they end up getting released on free sites, causing the photographer to lose money or not make as much.
Gene works with James, who runs the memerbship site. Gene does photos, James does mostly video (although he takes great photos too). James pays the models for work for his site. Gene does not pay, but if James comes along for the shoot and does video, then James will pay. Gene is such an amazing photographer that he is one of maybe 2-3 photographers that I will happily work with and not get paid. Gene ALWAYS delivers amazing pictures and sends them to the model in a timely fashion, which is much appreciated. I would shoot with Gene ANY DAY of the week without getting paid. The pics he takes are worth it to me by themselves!!! And there are not many photographers in the business that I would say that about. 8)

Thanks Luv... I try, but I have just gotten myself a little bit burnt out over the course of this year with prep, etc. That whole situation with that "bobbyhasbeenbad" gimmick who was attacking me for being a bad moderator was ridiculous. As usual, there was someone behind that gimmick who had a hidden agenda ::)

Completely true! I am a bad mod :( Rip has been fantastic, it just gets old hearing all the negativity so I stopped posting so much. Plus I use to spend WAY too much time on the boards!!

HA, I'm totally stylin' then! I SORT OF miss being in that kind of shape, but not really. ;D
It's different this year because I was so lean for so long. I was within 4-5 pounds of contest weight for like 4 months, and I kind of got over it. It hurt!
I have never looked forward to an off-season so much before. I'll be back where I was sometime in the future, looking even better hopefully, but until then it's time to put on the winter coat!

I'll merge this thread with the main Gene X thread on this board, but I figured I'd throw some of these out there for you guys to see first. I shot with Gene at Nationals, and he's one of the only shoots I did. I would shoot with Gene anytime, any place. He's a genius.
We did two shoots...first one on the docks, second one sort of a "secret agent" themed shoot....SO much fun! Love you Gene and James!
