Shawn's taper is ridculous there. Ronnie showed one of the craziest backs I have ever seen. From the relaxed shot, his lats never looked so thick and his triceps never looked so good.

I've always believed that Ronnie's delts are way underrated. They have the best shape out of any other bodybuilder I've ever seen and their detail is just sick.

I don't know. Ronnie's gut had laready begun there (and he couldn't even fully suck his abs in during the ab-thigh pose). Some parts of him are amazing but others (calves and distended abs) are poor. But Flex's ridiculously FAKE calves just piss me off.

Just finished watching Shawn ray - he should have won that show. Looked incredible (although not as good as 1994). I would have given it to Ronnie but his distended abs and worse proportion make Shawn better. Although, Ronnie's insane muscle is very impressive.

flaws and all. He had too many strengths combined with a great taper with a tiny waist. And he was massive (257) to boot.

but don't be fooled by the the dorian nuthuggers who say ronnie's delts are "nothing special"
they get praise everwhere.
everytime I watch the video, a few things stand out:
-Ronnie's quads are CRAZY in 1999 (much much better than the 1998 O)
-so was his back (that back double bi is just insane)
-his waist was really tiny back then.

in his 99 shape, I think even Chris was better than dorian in his 97 shape. He might have placed third behind Ronnie and Chris.

I have to wonder..even with today's GH and the like, just as Ronnie will never have (relatively) massive calves or great abs, could Arnold do it?
Its just funny how he had a massive upper body with huge calves, but skinny quads..
I realize that legs are much more 'emphasized' today than they were back then, but still. It makes you wonder whether or not this might have been a genetic shortcoming.

Well, his quads were not actually small....just looked small in proportion to the rest of his body.
You have to remember that at that time, the judges were not looking for massive legs, and really they only started to be rewarded in the nineties and the end of the haney/dorian era.
Platz never won shit, the judges didn't care about his legs.
Arnold, I believe could have brought up his legs if he emphasized them the way they are today, and with the gear and slin that modern bbers are throwing around.

This picture from the 1997 Olympia is fucking amazing! Dorian's entire back look like a sculpted block of rock. Not even granite, but just plain rock! Has any bodybuilder in history come even close to looking even half this hard? :o Thanks for posting this one, Hulky! :D

funny, I think dorian looks like total shit in that 97 back shot.
he has less than national level arms, poor detail for him, flat look, smooth glutes and hams, and one of the widest waists ever...
oh well, to each his own...
his only saving grace is that he is standing next to nasser...

i've said that i dont have any credentials but i at least post quotes from qualified people (judges, bbers, etc.)
to support my claims.
