I know the  bikini and new MPD boardshorts divisions are here to stay. If we still have bodybuilding I shouldn't care.
But, I do care and my reasons might be ideas and feelings you can relate to.
Now when I attend an IFBB pro contest, I know the MPD and bikini "pros" will be on the same stage as an OFFICIAL part of an IFBB pro event. At the NPC national events, the bikini, figure and MPD entrants will be there in much greater numbers then the bodybuilders.
I hate to admit it, but down deep, I am offended that some bikini bimbo or male model gets to share the stage with my fellow bodybuilders at a major contest. For me, being up on the NPC national or IFBB pro stage was a honor for any bodybuilder.
The genetic talent , work , and sacrifice it takes to be a top bodybuilder is something any other bodybuilder can understand.

In addition to this , I feel that the sport of bodybuilding has  been sold out by adding NON-bodybuilding, swimsuit contests. It was always common for the media to consider bodybuilding as a small, odd , cult sport. BUT, when you went to a bodybuilding contest, it was OUR crazy,  cult sport. The bodybuilding contest was the one place we could all feel good about our goal of building big, ripped muscle. Today,at NPC national events the actual male and female bodybuilders  make up about 20-30% of the official entrants in the contest. Simple math proves that these events are now mostly swimsuit contests with some real bodybuilding thrown in.
I fear we are now stepchildren in our own house.

Howard, I have stopped doing local shows. Especially here in Florida b/c the numbers of bikini/MPD/WPD is so big and im not trying to sit through that shit in order to see bbing.

Its a joke and a slap in the face of the bbers who have to suffer and kill themselves to get in shape. Only to have to wait until 10pm to go on stage. Bikini is nothing more than a money maker for the IFBB/NPC. Its here to stay b/c of the sheer numbers they get.

If bodybuilding were popular enough to sell out a theater, then perhaps promoters wouldn't have to debase themselves by putting in male physique douche rounds, or stage the next "Hooters Championship". But they do. Because bodybuilders don't bring enough fan base.

Think about it. If you're a great bodybuilder these days, you've all but extricated yourself from functioning society. You're now so big, and so drugged up, and the only path to being competitive is to forego normal human relationships. That means you probably haven't spoken to mom and dad in a while, or at least, are too embarassed to show them what you do lest you face the inevitable "do you take steroids, son" talk. So you avoid them. You probably don't have a girlfriend either, but if you do, hopefully she's there. Brother, sisters, friends? Nope. Your only friends are your buddies at the gym, and they really only hang around you at the gym. Outside, you have few friends. Certainly not enough friends who'd lay down money to see you pose. Add to the fact that your normal friends, if you have them, are pretty sure these things are gay.

Want Exhibit A? Check out Jason Huh at his recent guest-posing as Bane. That was sad and pathetic. And clearly indicative of what even the fitness lifestyle consumer thinks of today's bodybuilder. It's just not something worth paying for anymore. Maybe guys are too big, or maybe it's no longer special, or maybe it was never that cool to begin with. After all, most of the guys in a bodybuilding audience are gay or family. And if it isn't family anymore, then it's mostly gay. But even the gay guys aren't showing up anymore. Why not? INTERNET! They get pics of you for free, or for a small fee from muscleworship.com. Like straight guys, gay guys like to look at their porn in the privacy of their own homes too!

Promoters need bikini and MPD. Without it, not enough butts in the seats to make enough money to pay the bills. Plus, supplement companies aren't shelling out money for booths at these shows like they used to, because frankly, supplement companies have known since the crash of 2011 that bodybuilders no longer sell supplements as an aspirational marketing vehicle. You make more money using a MMA fighter as aspirational, or just some random no-name model that will sign a release for $500. MP douches, for all their faults, are actually cheaper for a photoshoot than bodybuilders, because bodybuilders still think Uncle Joe will come bail them out with a six figure contract. Also, congitive dissonance dictates that all that sacrifice should be worth something, right? Truth is, it isn't, at least not to the paying public.

There are some who pay for male and female bodybuilders though. Unfortunately, I think we all know who those people are. They are not there to reward hard work with applause. They're there because they want to see you naked. You're not an athlete. You're a piece of sexual meat to be consumed. Bodybuilding has regressed back to where it was in the 50s. A fetish act for gay men, who pay well and pay often, for their favorites. Bodybuilders should thank bikini and MPD...without them, there wouldn't even be a venue to peddle the fetishized wares of the average bodybuilder.

Good post and deals with the reality of contest promotion and the need to make $$.
I have not promoted a show in many years nor do I plan to promote any in the future.
In my humble opinion, a good promoter could still make "some"  money from putting on a bodybulding (only) contest without any bikini or male models in boardshorts, etc.
The real issue is that they can make more then 2x the $$ by adding these NONbodybuilding events.
I can't blame any successful promoter for useing the current multi-division format to make more profit .

Perhaps this new path will lead to greater success for all contest promoters?
Only time will tell if this works in the long run.

Its all financial for the promotors. Bikini, figure and MPD bring a TON of revenue. but at the same time, its at the expence of the bbers. But its a business and they are trying to get paid too.

What works, is having the women Friday night (fitness, figure, WPD, Bikini) and the men Saturday. Gary Udit did it this year with the NA's and they do it down here at some shows.

As far as the auditorium being empty for Huh's guest posing. They had a pro show and NPC show together. They ran the NPC portion after the pro's. And if im not mistaken the NPC show was a level 3 show which means it wasnt that big.

I didn't go to any single show so far this yr. I used to judge at least 2 npc shows , go to see 4-5 more and attend at least 2 pro events EACH yr.
If more bodybuilders stop going , I wonder if the MPD ,bikini and figure can be a reliable base for the promoters?
Hmmmm, only time will tell? But like you Mike, the contests have morphed into glorified swimsuit beauty pageant.
The glorification of building ripped muscles isn't the biggest thing at a bodybuilding contest these days! wtf?

But we were there in the glory days 'eh big Mike, and nobody can take those memories away.

That may be the answer ( 2 separate days).
Now... if the bodybuilders had a viable bodybuilding ONLY organization to go to, they would jump ship .
I just don't see how the NPC/IFBB pro div could survive with ONLY a figure, MPD, bikini format.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I see he bodybuilders as the foundation that holds it all together.
