I'm going to go further than the critics and say that Ledger's performance was the best I've ever seen since Brando's incarnation of Don Corleone in "The Godfather". It is that good. The only problem with giving him the Oscar is that the naysayers will claim that they are giving it to him only because he died, because they feel sorry for him. Of course, this is outrageous.
