The thing is, Hogan was such a superstar after you feuded with him there was no where to go but down...A main event program with Hogan was your apex, of course there is going to be a letdown after the feud is over. It's not like okay, I feuded with Bret now i can work with Shawn or Austin then Rock. Hogan was so big, you could work with Savage, Perfect whoever, and it would be a step down.

And, I think that was the beauty of guys like Flair, who never “obliterated” his opponents.
It left the chance to revisit the feud.
Think how many recurring programs Flair worked with Steamboat, Sting, etc. over the years.

WWF’s angles were often completely non-cyclical with respect to the over-simplicity of their usual formula for Hogan:
1.) Pick a heel and build him up.
2.) Make it appear as though Hogan can never beat the heel.
3.) Have Hogan crush the heal in a paradigmatic dénouement.
4.) Next…

A feud with Hogan usually culminated with a big match, and that was the peak.
A big match with Flair was “a” peak - i.e., not the last/only one.

At least they kept the Andre angle going for a little while.
And, Hulk did work an extended program with Savage after the “Mega-Powers Exploded” at WMV.

It just never made sense how they used many of the guys who “almost beat Hogan” after the programs.
I mean, after all that time & buildup - just for one night?

Spot on post. You just described WWE Wrestling in the eighties to a tee. Remember back in the mid to late eighties you would a new challenger to Hogan's title and it worked well.

One Man Gang
Killer Kahn
King Kong Bundy
Andre The Giant
Big John Stud
Roddy Piper
Mr.Perfect
Randy Savage

Etc, etc, etc. The only thing I hated is when Hogan kicked out of their finishing moves. That pissed me off. Like at WM2 when he no-sold the avalanch and splash. I hated that. Bud aside from that, its what made Vince money back then.

If he hadn't been such an asshole, he could have had it all for a long, long time.

And to top it off he bit the hand that fed him several times over even when that hand gave him chance after chance after chance.

I have seen Warrior live a few times. Saw him against Savage in the cage at MSG. Savage did the elbow off the top of the cage. Warrior pressed Sherri and threw her on to Savage. There was not one person sitting in their seats! The place was going off! Thats #3. Hogan facing Flair after Hulkster lost to Undertaker was #2. Hogan/Flair MSG. It was a Mania match. The crowd was sick! But #1 biggest crowd pop was Cena coming back after his injury drawing 30 at the Rumble. When he came out # 30 NYC rocked! There was not one person in the entire coliseum not screaming! Cena stole the show that night. Will always remember that one. That was serious energy!

Yeah, but with all due respect to Cena, being the top guy in WWE right now is kind of like being the valedictorian of summer school.

Cena's biggest fans are in bed by 8pm.

the biggest crowd pop I have ever seen (and I was there) was probably when Hogan Hulked up on the Rock at WM21. insanity in toronto.

To this day, I still can't believe they didn't change the finish.
It looked like the ref was getting instructions through his earpiece by the way he cupped his hand to his ear a few times during the match - kind of how a quarterback does on the field.

I thought for sure they were changing the finish.
Rock was great, but he shouldn't have gone over in that match, on that night, in that arena.

I guess Hulkster just isn't meant to win the big show in the Skydome.

I agree. they should have had the Rock go down to the legdrop.

very bad booking.

the only reason Hogan said he put rock over that night was because the scorpion king was being released like the next day or something.

and rock pretty much left after that match.

hogan should have won.

Nothing Rock could do would have made him the face in that match.
And, conversely, there was nothing Hogan could do to be the heel.
The only way to keep Rock over as a face after the match was to have him save Hogan from Hall & Nash, and then convince Hulk to do his old post-match song & dance.

IIRC, Rock did come back again after that and worked a brief program as a heel against Hogan, who was now back wearing the infamous red & yellow.

I forgot all about the Scorpion King release.
It makes sense that that is why they kept the finish.
I know everybody was thrown for a loop during that match, and it had to make Hulkster feel good/proud, as that was probably his last big and great moment onstage.
