I tend to agree with Laura.... public negative connotations aside, if you're looking in the purest sense of the definition, a bodybuilder would be lifting with the goal of adding muscle while keeping aesthetics and balance in mind.  Whether or not you need to have competed is up for debate.  I used to, but haven't in 6 years...so does that make me a bodybuilder still?  I think so because I still lift with the aforementioned goals.

If you're a cop or a bouncer or something then just eat like a horse and get strong, but if you're not lifting for competition and don't need strength and mass for your job why would anyone deliberately make themselves look like shit so they can press bigger weight?  Guess I'm an aestheics driven bodybuilder.

that is an extreme of weight lifting, more on the line of power lifting , another extreme would be taking shit loads of drugs, getting implants, and oil, to have aesthetics.
