Yeah him and danny boyle, I think are the best running directors right now.

These guys have the most versatility and range IMO
Jack Nicholson
Tom Hanks
Morgan Freeman
Sean Penn
Al Pacino
Robert De Niro

I'm not an actor but I've been on many movie sets and sat on a few audition boards and always find it fascinating to watch an actor suddenly become 'someone' entirely different than he actually is.
A couple of family members are actively involved in major movie productions as actors and stunt performers and during family gatherings everyone 'becomes someone else' for a few brief moments ... CAGE, BRANDO, ARNOLD, DENIRO, ETC..... and it's always very surprising and entertaining.
But the kids (4 and under) always complain and want their daddy back.

-
you think Pacino has range? hmm
He once had:
Panic in Needle Park- great junkie
The Godfather- great law abiding citizen turning into ruthless mobster
Serpico- great righteous cop
Scarecrow- great drifter
Dog Day Afternoon- great TBombz of his time
And then, it just went downhill with the occasional flashes of greatness.
-
you think Pacino has range? hmm
He was awesome in AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
Godfather stereotyped him.
-
you think Pacino has range? hmm
Acting-range, not physical range.

Another crazy retard. ::) you know that most people can separate fantasy from real life.
And most grown ass men living in capitalist societies can tell when a product is being sold to them.

What say you Getbig?
They are all outstanding. McShane's Al Swearengen was one of THE best characters on television, ever.
I used to not think all that much of Depp, but his performance in "Public Enemies" ... for my money, his John Dillinger was one of THE coolest motherfuckers ever seen onscreen. The way in which he seduced Marion Cotillard's character was a particularly good monologue. Even the actress had to be wet after that scene ;)
But there's truly no way to score a top three actors of all time. You've got Brandon, Nicholson (even though he is usually just "Jack"), Patrick Stewart -- heck, even Brian Cranston has stood up as a truly epic actor.
Best actresses would be a harder thing for me to nail down because I'm straight and I have a hard time separating good looks and acting ability. But I can say that gorgeous South African chick -- err ... damn. What's her name? AH! Cherlize Theron! -- is a fine, fine actress. For comedies, I honestly think Jenny Aniston kicks ass (and yes, again, I'm biased since I've had a crush on her since "Leprechaun" :D). Watch "The Break-Up" and tell me she isn't funny as hell in that -- Vince Vaughn too, for that matter.
As I said, there are really too many actors and too many different genres to pick a top three with which a majority of moviephiles might agree upon. Bruce Willis is great, Morgan Freeman is amazing, Denzel Washington is the man, etc., etc. James Earl Jones, Martin "Cpt. Williard" Sheen, Powers Booth ... we'd have better luck hunting snipe than agreeing on the best actors and actresses, methinks :)
-
Benicio Del Toro is extremely underrated.
Also, I want to add Lee Marvin.

Val kilmer is underrated
indeed. apparently he was hard to deal with though. a bit of a cunt by all accounts
-
Benicio Del Toro is extremely underrated.
Also, I want to add Lee Marvin.
John Wayne, Eli Wallach, Anthony Quinn, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Burton, Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, James Stewart, Gary Cooper, Jack Palance, Lee Van Cleef and Clint Eastwood should all be up there too. Ditto for Sidney Poitier, Sir Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, James Caan, Robin Williams and Danny DeVito.

There are two eras of acting: before Marlon, and after Marlon.
