From last May. The same will happen here sooner than later.
http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-05-22/greek-prostitution-soars-150-youth-unempoyment-hits-75-some-areas
With Greece suffering the biggest economic depression in decades, all so a few rich men can preserve their wealth and not have their EUR-denominated savings wiped out (even if the alternative means finally being able to rebalance externally using the Drachma instead of forcing internal rebalancing via unemployment and plunging wages), it was only a matter of time before we found out just how humiliating the conversion of the entire economy to a "gray", non-tax paying one would be for the citizens of Greece.
As the NYT reports, in just the past two years, the numbers of Greeks engaging in prostitution as a last course source of income has more than doubled: according to the National Center for Social Research, the number of people selling sex has surged 150 percent in the last two years.
Furthermore, with every business in which there is exploding "competition" and rich client scarcity, it is not just any prostitution, but very deflationary prostitution:
“Five euros only, just 5 euros,” whispered Maria, a young prostitute with sunken cheeks and bedraggled hair, as she pitched herself forward from the shadows of a graffiti-riddled alley in central Athens on a recent weeknight.
Many prostitutes have been selling their services for as little as 10 to 15 euros, a price that has shrunk along with the income of clients afflicted by the crisis. Many more prostitutes are taking greater health risks by having unprotected sex, which sells for a premium. Still more are subject to violence and rape.
Now a new menace has arisen: a type of crystal methamphetamine called shisha, after the Turkish water pipe, but otherwise known as poor man’s cocaine, brewed from barbiturates and other ingredients including alcohol, chlorine and even battery acid.
And with a surge in prostitution come the drugs, and the danger of an epidemic of blood-transmitted diseases, like HIV:
A hit of shisha, concocted in makeshift laboratories around Athens, costs 3 to 4 euros. Doses come in the form of a 0.01-gram ball, leaving many users reaching for hits throughout the day. They include prostitutes, whom Mr. Tzortzinis photographed in a seedy central neighborhood of Athens called Omonia, next to a large police station.
Shisha is most often smoked. But it is increasingly being taken intravenously; because of the caustic chemicals it contains, a rising number of users are winding up in the emergency room. Health experts say the injections are also adding to an alarming rise in H.I.V. cases around Greece, which surged more than 50 percent last year from 2011 as more people turn to narcotics.
For Mr. Tzortzinis, who grew up in the area, seeing women give themselves for as little as 5 euros underscores one of the many horrors of Greece’s drawn-out crisis.
Unfortunately for the country which is terrified to just say no to Europe due to the indoctrinated dread of what would happen if it left the Eurozone, this is only the beginning as the problem is far deeper, and it goes to the root of everything: an entire generation going to waste.
But while the Greek still soaring unemployment rate is no surprise to anyone, it is the youth unemployment that is the problem. And as the Telegraph reports, in some areas of Greece, youth unemployment has now hit a inconceivable 75%.
Europe's response to this pandemic of unemployment?
Europe's leaders have called for more action to tackle joblessness in Europe. Earlier this month, European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso urged Europe's leaders to come up with "a more ambitious plan to fight youth unemployment" at a next month's EU summit.
"We must give revive hope, specially for young people," he said. "We cannot wait for long, we are all aware this is urgent."
And when hope is not enough, and when these same young people end up as prostitutes, drug addicts or, worst, infected with HIV, maybe they should also hope that a cure for the disease is somehow discovered (and which they can afford).
Why? Just so the 0.001% uberwealthy can continue to get richer and richer courtesy of a year after year of flawed monetary and fiscal policy, even as the real world around them burns.

I live in a small town in a Greek island. There is a university here so it is filled with students, last year however it was the first time that I heard about female students prostituting to make ends meet, it broke my heart. The situtation is getting from bad to worse, so I wish no other country will go through what we are going through right now.

This is what America is turning into. Disability social security is exploding the last 6 years with people saying they can't work and need a check for life. Our unemployment payment checks from the government is over 2 years now. At what point will it be labeled welfare? After 3 years maybe? The last 6 years food stamps paid for by the worker's tax money has also went through the roof. Now with Obamacare almost everyone in the health care exchanges gets a portion of their insurance policy paid for by the government using worker's tax money. This country is heading towards hell as the amount of tax payers goes down and the takers expand. The party in charge with media support turns their back on seeing the obvious. You can't spend more than you take in. They keep kicking the can down the road. In ten to 15 years all hell will break loose unless this government and society changes direction. It won't though because people are now voting with the thought what can government do for me with other people's tax money. The government has no money. Only the money they collect in taxes and borrow from other countries.

It's a media response that's parroted by unthinking baboons. Everybody now 'hates bankers' because they 'ruined' people. You know, monkey hears, monkey says.
All that happened is that people that lives irresponsibly on debt, credit and stupidity, had the carpet pulled out from under them and lost easy access to credit. Same with businesses. The weak got killed and the strong survived. In my industry and personal life I didn't even know that a 'credit crunch' were going on. Kept wondering WTF people were on about ???
Now that credit are becoming freely available again, the housing bubble in London are bursting at the seams already, AGAIN. When unemployment comes down to 7% in the UK (7.2% ish right now), Bank of England is bumping up interest rates and the weak and irresponsible will get killed again.
If you're a financially responsible and intelligent person, all these dramas would seem like a stupid soap opera to you.
Otherwise, move on, nothing to see here. Only stupid people getting slapped with cold reality.
-
Economic crisis are a bitch because the bottom 5% are basically pushed off the cliff.
The bigger problem is that people DO NOT vote with their heads. If a government made up of party x + y + z + n created this clusterfuck, the next time there is an election NO ONE should vote for NEITHER of these parties. This way any corruptive connections created during that particular government are cut out and we will have a clean government for another 4 years. Instead, we vote the SAME people to positions of power and they quickly move to build bridges with the private world.
Democracy is mind-numbingly simple and ruthlessly effective when used in the right manner.

LOL at "guest-friendly" Greek hotels.
If the economy is really as bad as it seems, I'm sure at least some of the hotels are instituting LOS-style "joiner fees".
Another thought: With physiques like young Steve Reeves, I'm gonna guess that Greek ladyboys are gonna be fooling no one. lol

I take your general point but isn't there a fundamental difference between Greece and the USA in that the US can print money and Greece (which still uses the Euro, I think) cannot?
-
The Greeks have always been the laziest bunch of c.unts in Europe. Should never have been allowed to join the Euro. This is why rich and poor countries with different monetary policy requirements should not share the same currency. Removing the interest rate tools for individual countries was always going to end in disaster for 3rd word countries like Greece, Italy, Spain and Republic of Ireland.

Here's what I think I understand about that: I think they're talking about the global economic recession that began in 2008 which greatly affected the liquidity of some of the world's largest banks because they had invested so heavily in mortgage securities and risky financial instruments like "Credit Default Swaps" (which are something like insurance on something you don't need to own) which were dependent on the housing bubble so when the subprime mortgage crisis hit and caused the bubble to burst (houses lost a lot of value all of a sudden) it was so bad that some banks failed and others weren't feeling so free with lending money anymore.
Credit was no longer available so countries that weren't very solid financially in the first place (like Greece, some developing countries, and others) were hit very hard. In order to get the loans (from the IMF) to keep the government running, Greece agreed to some conditions (such as an austerity program) which seem to be causing even more hardship for the people even today.
BTW, I don't call myself well-informed about the situation and would welcome any corrections or additional info to what I've written here.

Parasite countries like Greece were encouraged to join the eu during the economic good times because they would vote more power for the benevolent central bloc, the filthy countries who voted "yes" for the Lisbon treaty deserve to see their children whoring in the streets.
Are those low rates only for diseased street rats or do the student escorts charge that little too?

Very good brother, that's improvement and spiritual growth. Women exploit their sexual power, esp the poor & less educated ones; it's the only true power they have.
As long as you're aware of this, you can make rational decisions. Keeping it LAT is a nice example of this.
-
But they charge less than 25 Euros...
That just proves that a free market economy based on the principles of supply and demand works best without govt regulation.
-

Exactly. Ireland especially deserves to suffer for what they did.
Even those nations who were denied a referendum and went and re elected the same politicians who ratified it "in their name " deserve to suffer every austerity measure under the sun for the next decade.
Want an EU central bank enshrined in law in the hope they will bail your poverty economy out forever? Enjoy the fallout when reality hits.

Natural result of a society that does not like to work and lives off welfare.
And that's why the Greek demographic is one of the most successful ones in terms of both career and education in the US. Playing into stereotypes here, but many parents own restaurants so that their children can go on to be doctors and lawyers.
While Greek society doesn't follow the "live to work" mentality of Anglos who view work as inherently good, Greeks are not lazy like their caricatures.

The banks didn't fuck anyone is greece, the people fucked themselves.

Hello Mrs. Merkel

prostitution is a vice that should be destroyed at all cost
Such a strict policy would destroy professional bodybuilding ;D
-
True, bankers are corrupt greedy bonus driven reckless bastards, but the Greeks have been conning other EU countries for decades. Greek politicians/leaders/bureaucrats = white collar criminals. Unfortunately instead of being thrown out of the EU or going to jail, they have gotten enormous amounts of money from EU taxpayers. Crime really paid for those c* unts
That perverted messed up country should be banned. (And the EU parliament as well)

Yep. Even if Ireland voted 'No' a 2nd time, there would've been a 3rd vote. Or 4th, 5th, 34th. Whatever. That was going to be forced through regardless. It's just shame the Irish fell for scaremongering and lies.

Didn't one of the hard-hit countries (Ireland, Scotland, Greenland?) tell the IMF to FO and, it turned out to be for the better?
-
I think the reason why my country (Greece) is going through the worst recession since WWII is due to various reasons:
1.Irresponsible individual financial choises from the Greeks
2.International banking crisis of 2008
3.Corrupt Greek politicians
4.Fragile Greek banks
5.Bad choises from IMF,EU & ECB regarding the solution of the crisis
Anyway maybe I am wrong however I do believe that if we hadn't elected corrupt politicians for the last 40 years this situation could have definitely being avoided.
In my opinion Greece was like a girl dress in super mini skirt, drunk, walking home alone in the worst neighbourhood of the town at 04:00 and then being gaing raped, i.e. we were a corrupt state taking advantage of and used to set an example from the now leader of EU 'Germany'.

A greek and a spainard walk into a bar...who pays the bill?

economic crisis hitting everybody

What happened to Greece can be attributed mainly to two things
1) nobody pays their taxes
2) too many government employees and too little private sector

the German

A greek and a spainard walk into a bar...who pays the bill?
The USA will pay for it. They want everyone to depend of our government.

Definately not DeShaun or Roosevelt Dunn.
They sit down comfortably on the porch outside the bar.

http://www.thrillist.com/travel/nation/legal-prostitution-world-map-of-every-country-that-has-legal-prostitution
A world map of countries that have legal prostitution
Yeah, there’re a lot of awesome things you can do in the US that you just can’t do in other countries. But on that rare occasion you decide to leave the greatest country in the history of civilization, you'll find there are, in fact, a bunch of things you can do in other countries you can’t do here, too! Like ride a camel in the desert. Or smoke in public. Or, you know, not that you’d do it, but pay someone to have sex with you. Legally.
A lot of governments turn a blind eye to prostitution, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's legal. And since the last thing we want is for you to spend the next decade sleeping on a dirt floor in a Thai prison, we've compiled this list (and helpful map) outlining all the countries in the world where paying directly for sex is legal, where it’s kinda legal, and where the law simply says "no dice".
LEGAL
Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Belize, Benin, Bolivia, Bonaire, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Curacao, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, East Timor, Ecuador, El Salvador, Estonia, Ethiopia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Macau, Madagascar, Mali, Mexico, Monaco, Nepal, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Senegal, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, St Martin, Switzerland, Turkey, UK, Uruguay, Venezuela.
KINDA LEGAL*
Burkina Faso - The act of selling sex is legal, but soliciting prostitution is not. So she’s going to have to make the first move.
Colombia - Though some guys who've been will tell you it’s impossible to get laid for free in Colombia, technically, you’re only allowed to make a business transaction with your new girlfriend in the “tolerance zones.”
Iceland - The actual act of having sex for money is not illegal. But paying for it is. So basically the only way to do this legally is to stiff (giggity) your escort.
Ivory Coast - Same as in Burkina Faso, soliciting a prostitute is illegal, but if you end up with her and pay for sex, you’re fine.
Japan - Japan says prostitution is illegal. But they have these "soaplands" all around the country where you can pay an independent contractor for a massage (so it’s not a brothel) and if you happen to hit if off really, really well and other things happen to go on, well, then that’s all fine and dandy.
Liechtenstein - They’re cool with it as long as you’re not doing it out on the street. So Richard Gere will have to look elsewhere for a fancy dinner date in Vaduz.
Norway - Following Iceland's "Nordic model" of prostitution, having sex for money is legal in Norway, but paying for sex isn’t. Same holds true in Sweden.
Russia - Since all those smoking hot Russian models are CLEARLY dating those 75-year-old billionaires for their good looks and charming personalities, Russia has deemed formal prostitution a mere “administrative offense,” kind of like drinking in public or speeding.
Sweden - See Norway and Iceland.
USA - No, just because you got some “extras” at one of the places on this list doesn’t mean it’s legal there. The US of A makes this list -- much like we make the list of world's largest meth producers -- thanks to some rural counties in Nevada.
*Since $150,000 in law school debt didn't sound all that appealing, none of us are lawyers. Which means we don't use fancy terms like "ipso facto", and we aren't COMPLETELY qualified to tell you if it's ok to pay for sex in these places. Just in case you end up in that Thai prison and are contemplating legal action.

Don't blame Titus. He was heading over there to fix things before the man threw the cuffs on him and Killy.

The sad reality of the article is that its not about economies its about the people of Germany + Austria vs Spain + Greece.
Germany and Austria are not in the situation because they are Germanic people.

The explanation for the Greek downfall is actually pretty simple:
Prior to joining the EU, Greece already failed to meet the monetary and financial standards set to qualify for EU membership (http://www.bankofgreece.gr/Pages/en/Statistics/accounts.aspx). But as someone already pointed out, the EU at the time, and arguably still is, a political project. And to give it more political credibility some criteria were met more lenient than others. Truth of the matter is, many of the original members other than the North-Western members (which at times also violate critera, hence detracting from credibility and giving the former countries leverage) would not have qualified.
Greece has a relatively weak economy in the sense that they produce and export far less than they import, thus have an outflow of currency. While yes, with the dragma they could print more money, this would only devalue the currency more, and wouldn't absolve their growing debts. By joining the EU, they actually dug a bigger hole for themselves, not because of the introduction of the Euro and loss of control over monetary policy. But rather because EU law does not permit or contain a bail-out clause, nor do EU regulations permit the removal of an EU member.
Basically, Greece got stuck in a regulatory limbo where they could neither be bailed out or filed bankruptcy, nor could they be kicked out by the other EU members to prevent the necessity of foreign injections which further degraded Greece's creditrating and outstanding debt. Pile ontop of that the corrupt political system of Greece (people retiring at the age of 40??), no real production factors and the poor management of money, and you're left with a moneydrain for years to come.
A moneydrain, atleast, until Greece nukes ISIS out of the middle East and takes over their oil resources. Which I feel should be their approach to the situation ;D ;D

Not totally true. Even thought the Greeks are lazier by nature they're not bad people. The Euro was meant to pit nations against each other and the weaker ones are getting raped.
Austria/Germany is suffering too... many goods have become really expensive.

The Euro enriches the germans and enslaves the greeks, without the Euro, The german mark due to their countries successful business nature accompanied with their engineering skill and efficiency would have doubled in value to most european currencies making German exports to expensive to sell, without the euro, the greeks could have printed the hell out of the drachma devaluing it, making imports to expensive opening up opportunities to manufacture locally and also a chance to export, Toursim wise they would have been cheap to visit. Greeks are a bunch of lazy, tax dodgers im not denying that, but the Euro has enslaved them and other similar states, they cannot recover, and the Germans even though they have to assist in the form of loans, that most likely will remain unpaid will remain the economic beneficiaries of the euro zone, due to the one currency system, two world wars couldn't deliver the long term benefits the euro has brought the germans.
