I think one of many huge mistakes the WCW made was when, instead of making Curt a Horsemen, they teased it and then had him join the nWo.  He was a "perfect" fit for the 4H, but just blended in with the nWo.

I guess your not a Mr. P fan? Who's your favorites then?
He's my favorite wrestler of all time. I just thought it was cool how he perfectplexed him. The crowd reaction was priceless, at first they're like bullshit then when he does it they pop huge.

That was the worst thing to ever happen to him was the WCW. It used to upset me so much what they did to him! I couldn't even watch it. Especially that rap is crap cowboy thing?

No doubt, Curt was wasted, just like the vast majority of the real talent that was in WCW.

I’d read a couple of different stories – some relating to Curt’s injury.
Personally, I suspect it came down to a combination of things including VKM tightening his purse strings, Curt’s best friend Rick Rude’s influence, and Turner’s money.

There were several guys the old man should never have let go, but Hennig was (one of) the biggest.

And you’re absolutely right.
Curt never had to “reinvent” himself because neither the character – nor the man – ever got old.

IMO Curt Henning should have never have gone to WCW. He lost his trademarked Mr.Perfect gimmick. He just wasn't the same and they really didn't know how to use him at all. A guy with Hennings talant they could have done so much more with him. But that's typical WCW. WCW was only good for one thing. $$$.

My girlfriend got me the Mr. Perfect DVD for Christmas.
I just watched Disc 1 tonight and was very pleased.
Good interviews with his Dad and family, etc.
Some of Wade Boggs’ stories were especially moving.
I enjoyed the home video footage & private album photos.

I'm still curious as to why they didn’t so much as mention his close friendship with Rick Rude. ???

All in all, though, great DVD!

Curt’s Dad & wife (widow) knew this, and I can’t imagine it didn’t come up at some point.

It was common knowledge even among many casual wrestling fans that Curt & Rick were buds. I’m not asking them to devote a whole additional disc to the two, but a simple acknowledgement would have been nice.
It would have fit nicely when they mentioned Robinsdale H.S.

Always felt the WCW really missed the mark in not making Hennig a Horseman instead of that shitty nWo turn.  He would have been a "perfect" fit.  ;D
Title: Re: Mr. Perfect
Post by: Montague on June 02, 2010, 07:58:43 AM
I wonder if Curt had any say in that.
He was, quite literally, a perfect fit for the whole ethos that the original Horsemen concept embodied.

So, they put “Mongo” in the 4-H, but sent Hennig to become member #62 of the NWO.

I suppose I wouldn’t have minded if the NWO had less than 6 or so guys when Hennig joined.
But, considering that over 2/3 of the WCW main roster was either Black & White or Wolfpac, no…
Curt deserved to be (and should have been placed) with the elite.

However, seeing how WCW management used Bret, it’s not at all surprising what they did with C.H.

Funny story about Curt.  A couple of buddies of mine went to see a Nitro and ended up at the same bar afterwards as a bunch of the wrestlers.  Curt was there and they struck up a conversation, later as the beers were flowing, one of them asked him "What do you do if you miss the gum?"  His deadpan response was an incredulous "I never miss."  ;D

LOL!!!
That sounds exactly like what he’d say.
Lots of guys have said he really was good at a lot of things.

About the gum..
I remember one time seeing him almost miss.
It looked like a faulty “launch” from his mouth.
At the last second, he bent his arm in at the elbow and got his forearm up to make the hit.

If Monsoon was around, he would have said something like, “Perfect, now, blasting the gum with that brachioradialis.”

I keep waiting for a Bulldogs DVD, and they keep pumping out HBK disc sets with the same fukkin footage that's already been released at least 18 times in some form.

Lol...I know. I would LOVE to see a bulldogs dvd with both matches and good documentary allocated to a two or better still a three disc set. You can do lots of stuff with the bulldogs. Plus, I would like to hear Tom Billington's views and opinions.

I noticed that the Undertaker has a new three disc dvd out but again like Shawn Michaels, how much of that footage is repeated??
Title: Re: Mr. Perfect

Just my opinion...

Both were exceptional workers in the ring.
They could have good matches with anyone.
I think that, while Hennig was more of a ring general, Davey’s best matches usually saw someone else do a lot of the thinking - as evidenced in his tag work with Dynamite and his singles matches with Bret.

Curt was better on the stick and in promos, which probably made him a more rounded performer, but both men were among the elite of ring technicians.
And, no doubt they could both deliver on command!

I just finished watching it and really enjoyed it. My Brother is gonna love it! Of course they were all related. But they were saying that Davey was one of the best wrestlers. I've seen interviews where Bret said Perfect was the best guy he ever wrestled. I don't know if it's Taboo to ask because both these greats have passed? But are Bull Dog and Perfect the best guys the buisiness has ever seen?
It still bothers me that both are dead. I loved watching Henning and Bulldog matches. They wee the type of wrestlers that worked well with everyone the were put in the ring with. Always a guaranteed a great match with those two.

Timmy is by no means saying the Miz is even close to Mr Perfect. I'm just making the comparison because I think that the Miz is another all around performer. You can put him any place in the show and he's gonna do a great job. I cannot remember the last time seeing a more well rounded superstar then the Miz. He could easily be the next it guy. There's so many guys on the roster that are underutilized but the Miz is the only one that can be the next big Superstar to carry the WWE. I wish he had a better finisher, but besides that he's the most perfect performer that's going today.

He surprised me.

How were your holidays?

Better then ever! In Miami for buisiness. Went to the Smackdown taping the other night. Great time! Place went berzerk for the Rock. Del Rio is the new champ. I really feel the Miz is without a doubt the most well rounded talented performer the show has seen in a very long time.

My best friend from college went to Mania the year it was in Miami. He said the pop was unbelievable when Rock's music hit. It was also his first time witnessing Taker at Mania. He said the overall card was weak, but the whole atmosphere more than made up for it.

Mania is up your way this year, right?

February is considered national "Black History Month" in America, but more importantly than that - internationally, interplanetary, and intergalactically, February is now officially, CURT HENNIG MONTH!!!

Sadly, next Sunday, February 10, marks the ten-year anniversary of the passing of perhaps the greatest talent on every level ever to grace professional wrestling. As a tribute, this thread will be pinned for the entire month of February!
Additionally, you will find below a rare shoot interview with Curt conducted in 2000.

Rest In Peace, "Mr. Perfect!"

Not only myself, but every fan of Mr. Perfect was excited to see the debut of Axel Curtis the other night on Raw. His drop kick on HHH gave me goose bumps! Yes there's other third generation super stars out there but Timmy believes this guy, with or without Heyman, is gonna be a headliner. I jumped out of my seat I was so happy to see him walking down the ramp. And then what happens??? HHH squashes him in his debut. Not only smacking Perfect jr. in the face but hogging the spot light in their match with this idiotic concussion storyline. Because of that I will never watch anything to do with HHH ever again. I love HBK but HHH is out of my life for good. It's a discrace what he did to Axel Curtis. Seriously one of the worst things I've ever seen in my wrestling fan life. HHH is a louse and I'll never waste another second of my life watching his ego ruin my beloved Federation.

It was cool to see, and I thought he did okay.  I was going to start a thread on it and am surprised Monty hasn't.

I don't quite have the same opinion as you.  I thought it was pretty good that HHH gave him a rub his first time in the ring.

I know it has been done before, but I would like to see a group with him, Cody, Dibiase, and Orton.  Of course, other than Orton, they are all too "plain" to get over.

Timmy is the furthest thing from a Jericho fan but respects him putting over Faaaaaaaaaaaaaandaaaaaaa aaaaaaaangoooooooooooooo ooooo. HHH? First off why on Earth is he running a program against Brock Lesnar? Let Brock and Heyman put over the active Federation talent. Brock and Heyman could push Randy Orton over and put him into Super Stardom. If I found a magic lamp in the sand and had just one wish. It's Shane O'Mac. HHH lives in HBK's shadow and is at best a C+ entertainer like Kevin Nash. Beautiful, picture perfect drop kick from Axel tonight on Sin Cara. The Perfect-plex will shine again!! Thats my point, and thats Perfect.

1.) Jericho is a businessman first and foremost. He's smart enough to know that, at this point in his life, money and physical well being are more important than a fictional character. Are you listening, Bret?

2.) HHH may be the best option they have to work with Lesnar right now. Rock was supposed to occupy that spot, but he's out until further notice.

3.) A third-generation wrestler adopting names and physical traits of his bloodline predecessors doesn't always work out well. Rock did it, but he didn't propel to superstardom until he evolved past the Rocky Maivia character. As always, it depends on the individual, as well as the fans demands, which can change at the drop of a hat.

Honestly, I didn't see it. I haven't been in front of a TV in a while.

In my mind, the biggest determining factors are what they give him, and what he does with it. I absolutely abhor this new generation that is handed every detail of what to do and say. It shoots a major channel of character development and evolution directly up the ass.

I had a lot of bad stuff going on this time last year, and completely missed bumping this fine thread honoring the anniversary of Curt's passing and celebrating his life.

I'm saddened that the links to many of the wonderful videos and pictures imbedded in this thread are no longer active.
I'm even sadder that we've seemingly lost many of the great posters who regularly contributed to this and other threads on our beloved Wrestling board, which at one time, was one of the most active (and always civilized) sub-forums on this site!

This was the first board I was invited to moderate on Getbig, and I still love it. I may hate the current state of pro-wrestling, but the eternal mark in me will always pop for the classics.

With that said, I am resurrecting this PERFECT thread (a day early so I don't miss it again) for the month of February.
Enjoy!!

Listen to Jericho's show with Lanny Poffo....they discuss Curt's vignette's.....said most of them were on shot takes and that Curt truly was a gifted athlete....

I put Curt, Scott Hall and Arn Anderson as the top echelon mid carders that never had a chance with the NWA, WCW, WWE/WWF Heavyweight title

I think Curt made a very good AWA champion. I suspect that, had his back held up and he stuck around longer in the Fed, the old man would have given him the strap for a run.

Back in 1989 when he was fueding with Hogan and they had a match here at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, when Heening came out and climbed the turnbuckle and swatted that gum into the crowd, people actually tried to catch his gum...that is how over Henning was. Great athlete. Miss his vindicates....knocking them out of the park while Wade Boggs looks in awe...throwing himself a hail mary touchdown...great stuff  8)

Hennig wasn't the only misused talent in WCW, but he was the biggest, IMO.

He was the biggest. Fuck the rest. If anyone couldv'e been a great heel champ at that time it would have been Curt....not David Arquette....Jesus Christ almight...Vince Russo is a joke....

Some of you know that work, training, and other "personal stuff" has lead to me not spending the kind of time on this site I used to. As such, it is very unfortunate that I neglected to bump this deserving thread devoted to a performer worthy of at least an annual salute.

Below is a letter apparently written by Curt Hennig shortly after the death of probably his best friend in the business, Rick Rude.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the source that originally published the letter. I only know/understand that it appeared in a wrestling magazine. If anyone knows the magazine, please post it here so that I can give credit.

Enjoy!!

By Curt Hennig

.....When my best friend Rick Rude died, wrestling really lost one of the greatest artists in our business. The guy had everything it took to be the No. 1 man. He had the body, the psychology, and the look. He had no flaws as far as I'm concerned.

.....I knew Rick Rude for more than 25 years. We met in eighth grade in Robbinsdale, Minn. Rick and I were so alike, always scheming. I remember one time I stole a pair of hockey skates from this kid. I told Rick that I got these skates, and if he sells them for me we would split the money. Rick thought that was one heck of a deal. He took the skates and sold them - back to the kid I stole them from! When he got caught, he never told on me. That's the kind of friend he was. From that moment on, we knew we were best of friends. When someone doesn't stooge you off at that early of an age, that's really something.

.....Through the years our friendship grew, and we went on many hunting trips, outings, and had lots of memorable personal and professional years together in the WWF. I was Mr. Perfect, and he was Ravishing Rick Rude. Rick arrived in the WWF first. I had never worked a territory with him. We lost touch and hadn't talked in about two years. My initial appearance was to be in Tacoma, Wash., in 1988. When I found out that Rick was staying at the same hotel as me, I called him when I checked in earlier in the day. I told him, "Rick Rude, I'm here to kick your ass!". He said, "Who's this?" I told him that I was in the lobby and I was starting in the WWF today. He wanted to know whose spot I was taking. I told him "Yours!" We had a damn good laugh!

.....Rick's character inside the ring was one of a mean person who went for the women. Outside the ring, he was pretty much the same. If you even looked at him wrong or checked out the girl he was with, or something like that, he would want to fight. Some guys like to fight like I like to play golf. Rick Rude was an all-around son-of-a-bitch!

.....The last time I talked to him was the day before he died. He had just started with this shoot fighting interest. He had been taking some classes in it and had two sparring matches. He said he did really well and figures he might be able to compete. He wanted to perform so badly. He couldn't wrestle because of some insurance reasons. He thought when he came back to WCW he'd have a chance to at least manage me or be involved in some way, shape or form, but it didn't happen. He came home shortly after the session and told me he was having some trouble breathing. Keep in mind, 10 days before this he had been in a car wreck. He cracked three ribs and was put in the hospital. Fluid had accumulated in his lungs, and yet had fought that day.

.....When I got home from the funeral and the live Nitro in Fargo, N.D., I checked my answering machine. There were two messages from him. In the final one he asked me if I had Eric Bischoff's telephone number, that he needed to call him about something. Then he said, "I'll see you later." I still hear those words, "I'll see you later". I've kept that tape and will never let anything happen to it.

.....I don't want anyone to lump him in with those stories about wrestlers abusing drugs and steroids. Rick Rude was not on anything heavy duty. He may have been taking some pain pills for his ribs. I've heard some people say his death was a suicide. No way. He was too much of a man to do that. If he had a problem, he would face it. He would look death in the eye. He wouldn't coward out of anything he did in his whole life. He was he most standup guy I ever knew. I learned so much from him about being a man. He was a man's man, 100 percent!

.....My friend Rick Rude lived five lifetimes. In that respect, if God decided to flip the switch on me right now, I could probably just say thank you. We lived it up and had a great time. I just feel so sorry for his wife and three kids.

Many interviews I have heard from wrestlers i:e Hall, Waltman etc said he had the best mind in the business. Hall said he learned alot from Henning.

Waltman said Henning named him "kid"

Definitely a great that died too young..

I actually remember when Hall and Hennig were a tag team. We had just gotten cable and ESPN would show AWA wrestling once a week.

Easy to forget what a beast Hall was when he was young:

The closest I've ever found is this interview from 2000:

Although, I did run across something a month or two ago that caught my attention. As usual, I can't remember the details of the interview, or where it was - but I know I have it saved somewhere.

Oh nice! I have to check this out. Aside from Henning due to his untimely death, I would love to hear a Rick Rude shoot if he had one too.

I know of no such interview.

Rick was a die-hard Kayfaber, and died before the advent of the "shoot" interview.

Ya, his time was way too soon. henning too. From what I understood, Rude was in for a major push in WCW shortly before his death.

I have heard similar.

He and Hennig were both collecting on a Lloyd's of London policy. I want to say that Curt somehow violated the terms of his payout, disqualifying his eligibility.

Supposedly, though, Rude was being pretty careful adhering to his terms.

Obviously, it gets increasingly harder to find new material to post concerning these guys the more time passes.
But, here's something I don't think has appeared on our wrestling board before.
In fact, I only just found it myself not that long ago:

Missed it by two days... LOL

The video below is a recording of the Bruce Prichard podcast in which he discusses (along with co-host Conrad Thompson) in great detail his memories of Curt Hennig. I thoroughly enjoyed this "shoot" conversation because it sheds additional light on many things we've discussed in this thread over the last decade.

Please enjoy!!!
